      Prehistoric Alpine Pile Dwellings, AT

      June 6, 2023 in Austria ⋅ ☁️ 18 °C

      I'm going to make this write up a little meta. Some of you know, but others may not. Emily and David put in about 5 years of research into this trip. Many weekends of downtime choosing the next country alphabetically and then finding some way to partition the country (region, state, major cities, etc.), then looking for,

      * Things to do in ____
      * Best museums in ____
      * Best day trips from ____
      * Underrated attractions in ____
      * etc.

      Every item we recorded was then ranked: high, medium, low, and that process organically painted the route of our trip.

      One late arrival to our research radar was realizing the unesco.org website can be filtered by country. Then we began the arduous process of going through each of those. During that particular process, one item completely sucked Dave in for a few days:

      Prehistoric Pile Dwellings around the Alps
      https://whc.unesco.org/en/list/1363/

      To be quite frank, this is not an "A lister" kind of item. It was just kind of nebulous. The fact that these sites are littered around Austria, France, Germany, Italy, Slovenia, and Switzerland made this tough to categorize. There are "937 known archaeological pile-dwelling sites." To call it uninteresting would be a disservice, but to choose a single worthy destination was a monumental task and FOMO set in.

      Today we decided to do a day trip to Mondsee, Austria (which eluded our earlier research) from Salzburg. It was chosen because it was in the lakes district, and because it was the closest city on the lake and it was only a single bus trip away. After the destination was already set, and we were trying to come up with sights to see, I came across a small town museum attached to a church, that an exhibit on, and had artifacts from Pile Dwellings archeological sites from this very lake.

      I have to say, someone put some love in this museum. It was probably the best museum we've been in that didn't have a sentence of English. Even ignoring that it was still a very good museum.

      A good portion of this museum was dedicated to the church itself. Now remember, this was a mostly impromptu day trip. The church itself was famous for two things. The first we didn't even know until we read an English sign inside the church. This was the filming location for the beautiful wedding scene in the "Sound of Music."

      https://youtu.be/DIc6U0wbLJs

      That isn't the most astounding thing about this church. That back altar is famous for having, on clear display, the mummified remains of a local saint, Saint Konrade II. I must have missed that in the Sound of Music. See the accompanying post on "Lakes Region, Austria" for pictures.

      Actually, I didn't notice this in person, but when looking at my picture I noticed there are actually 5 mummies in the altar. Two of them can be seen in the original Sound of Music.

      Back to the Pile Dwellings
      The Pile Dwellings are pretty amazing. Some of them date back to 6000BC. To try and make it short (too late), the dwellings were all built near lakes and on Stilts or Piles. This was to protect these ancient structures from occasional flooding. The houses themselves were usually built on marshland, which in sure also served as predator protection. The marshes also served as a means to preserve the Piles, and other artifacts from the settlements. Thus we actually have a lot of evidence to tell us how these ancient humans lived in this part of the world.

      Mondsee - zum dritten Mal für uns

      September 1, 2023 in Austria ⋅ ⛅ 19 °C

      Wir wussten, dass der Campinglatz und die Umgebung uns super gefallen und haben nur auf schöneres Wetter gewartet um hier her zu fahren.
      Hier bleiben wir 5 Tage!
      Wir stehen mit Blick auf den See, der ein beliebtes Fotomotiv ist. Zu Recht.
      Vorne der See dahinter der Berg, die Almkogel mit seiner Drachenwand.
      Die Fahrradwege um all die Seen (Wolfgangsee etc.) hier sind nett und die Camping Betreiber auch. Auch ein gutes Restaurant gibts auf dem Platz.
      Und hier erwähn ich auch mal die wirklich komfortablen Sani- Einrichtungen und Waschräume, die wir sehr zu schätzen wissen.

      Zwei Gipfel, eine Tour

      July 12, 2022 in Austria ⋅ ⛅ 16 °C

      Ich schreibe das zwei Tage später, da ich nach den Touren einfach ko war und halbkomatös den von mir auserkorenen Sessel bevölkert habe oder ins Bett gefallen bin.
      Nach unserem gestrigen Desaster (der Gipfel war so nah, aber für uns unerrreichbar) wollten wir es heute wissen. Auf zum Schober und zum Frauenkopf knackige 1,5h mit Anstieg, kleiner Kletterei und einem Gratweg zu den Gipfeln, sozusagen zwei in einem. Über steile Wurzelwege und Treppen hinauf, wer zum Gipfel will muss steigen. Aber warum sind die Abstände immer so hoch? Wenn die Tritte über die Länge meines Unterschenkels gehen und mein Knie im Antritt über der Hüfte steht (was bei meinen kurzen Beinen fast immer der Fall ist) führt das meist nach kurzer Zeit zu brennenden Oberschenkeln und knotiger Muskulatur im Allerwertesten, wenn mir nicht vorher schon die Luft weg bleibt, da sich die Lunge über so viel Krafteinsatz beschwert. Aber danach fragt keiner, ich auch nicht, ich will hoch. Also Zähne zusammengebissen und rauf. Es ist wie bei der Geburt, sobald man es geschafft hat , sind alle Schmerzen und Beschwerden vergessen und man sieht nur noch den Himmel. In diesem Fall gleich zweimal, da der zweite Gipfel über einen Grat und kleinen Höhenweg zu erreichen war. Herrliche Aussicht und wirklich lohnenswerte Schinderei.Read more

      Etwas ruhiger

      July 13, 2023 in Austria ⋅ ☁️ 21 °C

      Heute war Regenwetter. Nach dem Frühstück machten wir uns auf den Weg nach Golling. Dort haben wir den Gollinger Wasserfall bewundert und sind anschließend in das Aqua Salza gefahren. Eine sehr schöne Wellnesstherme. Dort verbrachten wir 4 schöne Stunden...
      Da es aber ohne wandern doch nicht geht und der Regen aufgehört hatte, entschlossen wir uns noch durch die Salzachklamm zu wandern....
      Dann war der Tag auch schon vorbei. Jetzt haben wir nur noch zwei Tage in dieser schönen Umgebung, dann müssen wir wieder heim☹️

      Taming a dragon

      April 21, 2017 in Austria ⋅ ☀️ 4 °C

      Today, we did one of Austria's highlight fixed-rope-climbs "the dragon wall". It was our first longer outdoor climb and a challenging one for beginners for sure. But after the practicing indoors, we felt ready for a more challenging one.

      The hike goes up the steep wall on the left of picture #2 all the way to the mountain summit. We were climbing for 3 hours and then hiked down on the other side of the mountain for another 2. And to be honest, for the first 20 minutes or so I was quite nervous. Climbing outside simply is another story than being indoors where everything is controlled, secured and known. But being on the fixed rope is super safe and so we got to learn and enjoy 3 amazing hours of adventure.

      I definitely learned to trust myself and the equipment and we've all caught the climbing fever now :)

      Same climb, different brother :)

      April 29, 2017 in Austria ⋅ ⛅ 6 °C

      Mo and I had planned a climb into a canyon at lake Wolfgang, but after a full night of snow, the climb was covered in a foot of snow and we had to change our plans. So we decided to do the dragon wall climb which I had done with my younger brother a week earlier.

      It was so fun, again. Mo is such a natural climber and rocked through the 3 hour climb in just over 2 hours! I could barely keep up ;) The whole trip including hiking in and out was nice, sunny and we just enjoyed a great time together. Thanks Mo, and let's do that again soon :)
