    Dhaka

    August 18, 2019 in Bangladesh ⋅ ⛅ 30 °C

😊Read more

    Dhaka

    November 27, 2019 in Bangladesh ⋅ ☀️ 27 °C

Capital of Bangladesh. There is an old and a new Dhaka. Most of what's interesting is in the old city. However, a few are worth noting from the new. 1st is the Bangladeshi Parliament building designed by the famous architect, Louis Kahn. 2nd is the monument to the language martyrs. Years back when there was east and west Pakistan, the west wanted the east to adopt Urdu, the language of the West as the common language. The east resisted, with a small war resulting. Eventually, they split into 2 countries, with Bangla as the official language here. You can see why the country is so named. 4rd is a look over part of the city from the wall of the unfinished 17th century fortress. 4th is one of the buildings within the fortress. 5th is a temple to Kali. Last is the main room at the University of Dhaka where students are sitting for an exam.Read more

    Old Dhaka

    November 27, 2019 in Bangladesh ⋅ ☀️ 27 °C

As the name was implies, this is the old part of the city where most of the interesting places seem to be. It is an area of narrow streets and alleys, some narrower than my shoulders.
The 1st picture is the so called Pink Palace, for obvious reasons. This was built during the Raj by the landlord of the area. Next is one of those narrow streets. Then a Hindu temple, an Armenian Orthodox Church and the old mosque. This was a trading center on the southern route of the silk road. So, many nationalities mixed here.Read more

    The Rocket

    November 27, 2019 in Bangladesh ⋅ ☀️ 28 °C

A classic, historic, old, sidewheel river steamer working the Kirton Khola River and other interconnected waterways, all the way at to the Bay of Bengal. Although no longer steam driven (it's diesel now), the rest of the boat remains essentially the same.
The first 2 pictures look at the steamer from the dock. 3rd is the 1st class area where my cabin was. 4th looks at the deck where the below 2nd class passengers staked out their floor space to sleep. The last two look out over the river from the top deck. One is at Dhaka, showing the many small boats running back and forth. The other looks at the sunrise on the river.

    Kawran Bazaar, Dhaka, Bangladesh

    November 27, 2019 in Bangladesh ⋅ ☀️ 24 °C

The city's wholesale market that begins at 3 AM, running through late morning. Amazing chaos. Amazing amount of food. Amazing that even the fish market had no unpleasant fish smell. Everything fresh. The pictures are various representative parts of the market.Read more
