Kayak down the Lesse

Went for a quiet canoe trip down the river next to the camp site. Train trip 12k up river then paddled back. Found that lots of others had the same idea so it was a bit crowded. More like dodgem cars than canoes but great fun with some dramatic rapids. No sign of Health and Safety here!Read more

Dinant, Namur, Belgien

Unser vorläufig letzten Zwischenhalt in Belgien machten wir in Dinant, einer sehr schönen Stadt an der Maas mit zwei grossen Errungenschaften - dem Saxophon und Leffe Bier.

Wir spazierten von der Zitadelle zur Maas hinunter und fanden dort ein kleines Café, in welchem wir eine Stärkung zu uns nahmen. Anschliessend ging es mit dem E-Scooter zur Abtei Leffe hinauf, leider durfte man den Scooter dort nicht abstellen und wir mussten wieder zurück ins Stadtzentrum und den ganzen Weg nochmals zu Fuss gehen. Die Abtei beinhaltete ein Museum über die Geschichte der Brauerei und wurde von einem Bier auf der Terrasse mit Blick über die Stadt gekrönt. Auf dem Rückweg zum Camper machten wir noch Halt bei einigen der zahlreichen Saxophones, die in der ganzen Stadt verteilt sind.

Nun geht es für einige Tage nach Luxemburg, bevor wir nochmals durch Belgien fahren.Read more

Fahren und Abendessen in Mons

Was soll ich zum heutigen Tag sagen... Wir haben floaten perfektioniert. Oder schimmeln. Prokrastination ist unser zweiter Vorname.

Wir haben heute Tatsache bis 13:30 Uhr einfach gelümmelt, ehe wir uns aufgerafft haben und Duschen gegangen sind. Übrigens die saubersten Duschen und Toiletten, die wir die ganze Reise haben sehen dürfen. Zuvor gab es ein zauberhaftes Frühstück mit Eiern und Speck vom Chef persönlich. Ich habe mich nur zurück lehnen müssen und es gab sogar Kaffee ans Bett.

Sauber und gut duftend begaben wir uns dann auf den Weg nach Mons. Dort waren wir nämlich mit einem alten Freund zum Abendessen verabredet. Tolle Gespräche bei griechischem Essen - was will man mehr! Nach einem 20 minütigen Spaziergang waren wir wieder am Bus und haben einen Standplatz für die Nacht gesucht. In Mons wollten wir nicht bleiben - das war uns zu laut. 🥲

Um 0:44 haben wir unseren Standplatz direkt am Fluss von Dinant erreicht. Ein süßes kleines Örtchen, das wir morgen noch, bevor wir nach Hause fahren, erkunden werden. Gute Nacht! 😴Read more

Traveler Frankreich war auf jeden Fall die bessere Entscheidung als Dänemark, nachdem wir Bilder von absaufenden Campingplätzen gesehen haben. 😅😅 Leider viel zu schnell zuende, das stimmt wohl. 🥲

Traveler Jaaa ich muss aber sagen, dass ich nicht weiß, ob wir das nochmal so machen würden. Mal abgesehen von diesem Städtchen hier heute, würde ich vermutlich einfach nach Le Havre an der Küste anfangen. Vielleicht machen wir das nochmal irgendwann.

Settled for a few days in this riverside town in southern Belgium, which seems to be renowned for jaz and saxophone in particular..

Quiet woodland site beside the river a 5 miles bike ride to the town, which we explored today visiting the citadel via cable car. Enjoying the warm weather which seems to be bathing most of Europe at the moment.Read more

Cycling down the Leffe Valley

Just over 20 miles circular route today, taking in chateau and "Beaux Villages" . Pleased to have electric for the first half as Belgium certainly has some hills. Cruised down through the Leffe valley and celebrated with lunch and a beer on the Meuse. The Leffe brewery has moved out of town now but its origins were at the monastery in Dinant back in the 12 th century.

Yesterday we went North-west where we were speaking Dutch, today South-east where we speak French.

Dinant is a city in Belgium’s Wallonia Region. It’s on the banks of the Meuse River and backed by steep cliffs. Perched on an outcrop above town is the centuries-old fortified Citadel. It's now a museum with sweeping views. Below it is the Gothic Collegiate Church of Our Lady. Nearby, on the site of saxophone inventor Adolphe Sax’s birthplace, Mr. Sax’s House has interactive exhibits on the instrument’s development.Read more

Der Weg ist das Ziel und es ist so schön, auf unserer Reise nach (irgendwo in Portugal 🇵🇹) den Blick nach links und rechts schweifen zu lassen. Im Minieuropa in Brüssel gibt es das Modell einer Kirche - direkt unter einer Festung. Wir fuhren nach Dinant in Belgien, um uns dieses opulente Ensemble reinzuziehen. Und wie so oft - Original schlägt Kopie!👨‍🎨 Dass der Erfinder des Saxophons 🎷hier geboren wurde, und ihm zu Ehren hier endlos Riesenmusikfeste stattfinden (bei dem die Musiker z.B. per Schiff auf der Maas durch die Stadt flanieren), ist für den nächsten Besuch vorgemerkt.Read more

Einen weiteren Zwischenstopp legten wir im Städtchen Dinant ein. Dort wo die Maas einst die Felsen der Ardennen entzweit hat, und eine Schlucht zurückliess, liegt das geschichtliche Städtchen Dinant. Die Zitadelle wurde 1818–1821 von den Niederländern errichtet, sie steht auf einem Felsen 100 Meter über der Maas und fungiert nach dem 2. Weltkrieg als Museum. Jazz wird hier besonders gern gehört - denn der Erfinder des Saxofons, Adolphe Sax, wurde hier geboren. Auf der Pont Charles du Gaulle Brücke stehen zahlreiche Saxofone verschiedener Staaten. Nach wenigen Gehminuten in Dinant war das Glück wieder auf unserer Seite und Regen setzte ein. So setzten auch wir, aufgrund mangels Regenschirmbestand, unsere Reise Richtung Tagesziel fort. Am Camping Grimbergen angekommen schien die Sonne. Nachdem wir unseren Stellplatz eingerichtet hatten, bereitete Jan eine Pilzpfanne mit Eierspätzle zu. Den Abend liessen wir mit einem Brettspiel und begleiteter Regensymphonie ausklingen. Morgen werden wir Brüssel erkunden.Read more

Maison de Monsieur Sax, Dinant

We awoke to yet another overcast day but we were determined to see Dinant and what it had to offer. First up was Maison de Monsieur Sax, the home of Adolphe Sax, the inventor of the saxophone. It was here in Dinant that he was born in 1814 and he invented the saxophone in early 1840s, and after reading up on his history it seems he was lucky to live long enough to even make that invention. Some people are just meant to be.

He is probably the only person more clumsy than Brad and he survived almost 10 near death experiences as a child. Some of his near misses included falling from a 3rd story window, gunpowder explosions, falling roof tiles striking him on the head, falling into a fire, poisoning and near asphyxiation.

Later in life he suffered lip cancer, had several legal battles over patents of the saxophone that he invented, was declared bankrupt three times, subsequently dying aged 79 of pneumonia in Paris, in poverty.

Dinant is quite proud of their “son” and there are saxophone statues and monuments throughout this small town.Read more

Citadel of Dinant, Dinant

Today we continued our sightseeing and went to the Dinant Citadel by cable car. The citadel was built in 1815 on the site previously fortified in the 10th century and overlooks Dinant and the strategic Meuse River.

Dinant has origins dating back to the 7th century and was already populated in Neolithic, Celtic and Roman times. Meaning “Sacred Valley”, its strategic location on the River Meuse exposed Dinant to battle and pillage throughout the centuries.

In the 16th and 17th centuries, wars between France and Spain, Dinant suffered destruction, famine and epidemics, despite its neutrality. In 1675, the French army occupied the city and it was briefly taken by the Austrians at the end of the 18th century.

The city suffered devastation again at the beginning of the First World War. On 15 August 1914, French and German troops fought for the town in the Battle of Dinant; among the wounded was Lieut. Charles de Gaulle. On 23 August, 674 inhabitants were summarily executed by Saxon troops of the German Army - the biggest massacre committed by the Germans in 1914. None of those responsible for these massacres were brought to justice after the war.

The citadel presents the history of Dinant in such a unique and interesting way with mini movies, sensory room experiences, photographs, models and replicas of the living conditions and bunkers. They honour those killed in the massacre ensuring they are never forgotten. It is an amazing experience and a very informative one., with the added bonus of amazing views over the town below.Read more
