      Cabo Frio, Brazil

      March 5, 2023 in Brazil ⋅ ☁️ 50 °F

Cabo Frio, founded in 1615 with a population of about 230,000, is known for quaint streets and many beautiful beaches. Beaches are known for their white sand that does not get hot (no mica in the sand). We went for a relaxing walk through town and to the beach and spent time enjoying the view.Read more

      Cabo Frio

      July 9, 2022 in Brazil ⋅ ⛅ 24 °C

Started with a quick walk to the Buzios centro beach to see it in the daytime. Then drove to Arraial do cabo and joined an all afternoon boat tour of a nearby island and some different beaches. Striking colors of water everywhere. And gorgeous isolated beaches but certainly not isolated from other boat tours. Wow, there had to be 50 different tours going on at the same time. Felt like a mux of greece and the carribbean.

Enjoyed relaxing at a few of those beaches and eventually back to the port and then drove further down the coast to Cabo Frio. Arrived just before sundown in time to grab a snack and beer by the waterfront while a hotel search was finalized. Pretty sweet way to cap the exploring.

After visiting a canal, had a crazy cheesy shrimp and brazillian cheese meal, followed by drinks at a trojan themed bar and then an old rock n roll place. I frequently have to remind myself i am in brazil. I'm not sure what i expected but its such a lively and diverse culture and environment. Very chill place to be once beyond the big cities. The language is the biggest challenge for me. Portuguese is very similar to spanish but also quite different in non intuitive ways :) i learned a few small phrases and otherwise lean heavily on them recognizing my spanish words, which has been a wonderful strategy so far haha. My Spanish is considerably better than a year ago but not really conversational yet.

      Cabo Frio, Brazil

      March 5, 2023 in Brazil ⋅ ⛅ 30 °C

Today, we were tendered a shore. With no guided tour booked, we thought a walking tour would do. That lasted about 10 minutes. Just a little hot again and decided to hire a taxi.
It was an interesting time as our taxi driver only spoke Portugese. She had pictures of the sites we visiting so we had a general idea of what we were seeing. Tour did include the city's oldest area. Of course, a stop at one of its famous beaches with white fine sand. Since it doesn't have mica the sand doesn't get hot and you can walk on it with bare feet.
The beach was unbelievably busy, and since it was Sunday most places were closed.
Looking forward to tomorrow, a sea day.

    • Day 84

      Cabo Frio, Brazil

      March 5, 2023 in Brazil ⋅ ☁️ 84 °F

      New-to-us port #15.

Cabo Frio translates as Cold Cape. Cold … sounded great to us after the three hot days we’d experienced in Santos and Rio de Janeiro.

Of course, cold is relative here … but 83F is a heck of a lot better than 92F. And there was a lovely breeze to keep us comfortable most of the time. (OK, technically, the cold here refers to the waters which are colder here than in other beach cities nearby. Mui later confirmed the water temperature … once he waded out to the deeper end at the beach.)

We were first onto the tender this morning. Not by design, really. We were sitting in the Insignia Lounge a little after 7:30a, purple tender tickets in hand, when we were told to proceed down to the gangway … six of us in all … plus that many crew members. The announcement that the ship was cleared had not yet been made. Works for us. What was funny was that the tender pilot had no idea where the entrance was to the protected waters and the pier, but with directions from the Insignia bridge we found the right place.

Ashore, a young woman welcomed us and gave us information and a map. She advised that since it was Sunday, she did not recommend going to the town center. No worries, our plan was to go to Praia do Forte (Fort Beach), the beach closest to the tender pier … a half-hour walk away with a slight detour.

With the breeze mitigating the heat and humidity, it was actually comfortable walk. Along the way, we even squeezed in a bit of sightseeing by going to see Igreja São Benedito in Passagem, the first settlement area of Cabo Frio … dating back to 1616-1660. The church itself dates back to 1761. A little rundown, but we enjoyed checking it out anyway.

Praia do Forte was crowded when we arrived just after 9:00a. But we found a table, chairs, and umbrella for free … in return for the purchase of beverages. Our three hours on the beach thus cost us a mere $4. Mui settled down in the shade and I went for a walk along the sugar-white beach. The sand was cool underfoot … because there is no mica in it.

My destination was the Forte São Matheus. The white building, constructed by the Portuguese in 1618 at the entrance to Boca da Barra, gleamed under the sun. No steps to get up to it … just a scramble up the rocks. Frankly, it wasn’t worth the effort. There wasn’t much to see because the building itself was closed … some canons, a sentry box, and lots of “posers” trying to outdo each other’s selfies.

Once I returned to the table, we ordered our drinks and then Mui went in the water for a dip. He had to walk in not-quite-knee-deep water for about a 100 yards before he could actually immerse himself for a swim. He found the water refreshing after sitting on the beach for an hour.

After Mui drip-dried for a bit, we decided to head back to the tender pier. The beach was now packed as far as the eye could see, but not too bad at our end. When we stopped to check out the birds at the fishermen’s cove, we picked up an escort … a dog. It followed us at first, and then started leading us. We’d stop … it would stop and look back. We’d switch sides … and so would it. Funny. It eventually went its own way when we arrived at a small pier from which boats depart for Ilho do Japones (Japanese Island).

It was interesting to note, as the tender headed back to Insignia, that Ilho do Japones, where the beach had been deserted when we came ashore around 8:00a, was now packed with beachgoers ready to party.

We were back on Insignia a little after noon … just in time for lunch.

It’s now 3:00p, and in another hour or so, we will weigh anchor and continue north along the coast of Brazil to our next port. But first … tomorrow will be a day at sea.

      Millionaires Lifestyle

      January 20, 2016 in Brazil ⋅ ⛅ 25 °C

We have been invited out today on the boat, the housekeepers prepare all the meat and drinks and we set off to the Marina. As the boat pulls in I cant beleive my eyes , its a huge speedboat with a 3 berth jetski attached to the back. Everything is loaded onto the boat and we set off. We head out of the marina and do a tour off the small beaches before anchoring off. The bbq is attached and the beers are passed around , before the boys set off on the jet ski. The huge wireless speaker is connected and we now have a rock boat, tke brazillan funk is pumping out so loud my heart is banging to the beat. We dance eat and frolick in the sea and I honestly don't have a care in the world. Mark is offered a go on the jetski and before i can blink he is off . I decide to have a try at the paddle board which is a lot harder than it looks but without blowing my own trumpet I'm quite good at until i need to turn around. I spend minutes paddling to one side but am still going straight, I panic a little as at this rate ill be in Rio de Janeiro before i'd planned. I try paddling on the other side and for some unknown reson this works and i'm heading back to the boat. Bruno(the owner of the paddle board is fantastic on it , doing head stands etc and later in the day comes back from the beach with strawberry Caiprinhas . Food off the bbq is cooked all day and we drink more and soak up the atmosphere. It has not stopped raining here but as we head back to shore Mark and I are both sunburnt. We grab a quick shower and its time to head back to Campos to collect our books. A 3 hour drive and we book into a hotel, after all the sea air and only having had 3 hours sleep I sleep like a baby .Read more

Arrail do cabo - Départ de la ferme

      May 28, 2018 in Brazil ⋅ ⛅ 22 °C

Read more

      Cabo Frio

      April 22, 2017 in Brazil ⋅ 🌧 26 °C

Read more
