      Flucht in die Sonne ❄☀️

      January 30, 2023 in Bulgaria ⋅ ☁️ -9 °C

      Musala Peak 1/2

      July 9, 2018 in Bulgaria ⋅ ⛅ 8 °C

Today, I wanted to make it to the top of Musala (2925m), the highest peak between Alps and Caucasus in Europe. Unfortunately, the the gondola did not work which would bring me to 2300m.So, I decided to give it a try from Borovets (1300m)

I started hiking. I sweated excessively. The only things you hear is your own breath, the river and a few birds. My heart was pounding heavily as the air got thinner. After climbing up for 3,5hours of a demanding hike trough forest, a pathway that partly turned into a river, I reached the top of the Gondola Yastrebez on 2300meter.
There, it was extremely foggy and an icy wind blowing into my soaked clothes. From there I'd still needed around 2,5hours to the top and I had to come down as well. So, I decided to turn back and enjoy the tour instead of making a survival trip out of it.

I only met 4 persons and two dogs along the way. One dog tried to eat me while he only wanted to play...as he was pretty tall, I did not like the idea too much :D

The landscape is just amazing. You can watch how it turns from a dense wood into an open landscape after passing the tree line. Sun finds its way trough the foggy clouds and the water vaporizes into the air between the plants. The Bistritza river is floating heavily downwards and partly floods the path.

Thanks for this lovely 6hours hiking trip Mountain Musala in the Rila mountain region. I'll find a way to continue exactly where I stopped to reach the peak someday ;)

      Markudjik

      February 14, 2017 in Bulgaria ⋅ ☀️ -16 °C

As we walked into town this morning, I commented to Ben that, with a couple of days of confidence behind us, today felt like a day for falling over...I managed to fulfil this prophecy before even getting skis on! We planned on going to the top of the mountain, meaning once we were kitted up we had to walk to the otherside of town to the gondola. With snow boots on and skis on my shoulder, I left the kit shop, stepped outside and hit the deck hard - after a bambi-esque scramble for traction, I landed on a knee and a hand whilst the skis and poles clattered everywhere. Thankfully, no damage more than a few bruises and aches.

Walking in snow boots means a complete inability to bend or move your ankle, so we walked the jaunty snow boot walk to the gondola. A 25 minute ride to 2369m and the weather was unbelieveable, not a single cloud in the sky all day from the base to the peak of the mountain. The view was equally stunning, snow tipped mountains on the horizon in every direction.

We headed across a ski way and down Markudjik 2, a lovely wide and steep blue recommended by our rep, and enjoyed it so much we looped around and down it couple more times. The first run of the day was a bit of a killer - cold muscles complaininh the entire way. Ben was the real victim up here though - he caught a ski pole in the face from our very apologetic chair lift companion, before wiping out at the bottom of the run and almost going head over heels! Thankfully, in the latter situation, I had camera in hand and filmed the whole thing - for plentiful reruns over lunch later!

As the peak filled up we left and headed down the Musala Path, a long blue which would run us all the way back to town. We descended into tree-lined glistening valleys with curling S-bends between longer flat runs. It was absolutely beautiful and a lovely ski too, one we will definitely do again.

      Bambi legs on the Suhar

      February 13, 2022 in Bulgaria ⋅ ☁️ -2 °C

After an early alarm, we breakfasted at 7.30 before a short walk to the kitting shop. And to be fair...the day began with a whimper. Lack of signage and information from Crystal Ski about where we were kitting out, how it worked and similar, coupled with a queue of over 90 minutes to get kitted out was rather anticlimactic. Yes, it's half term...but they knew how many people arrived yesterday!

Nonetheless, we eventually got out shortly after 10.30am and dispatched an excited mum and Kev to ski school in a very misty nursery slope, before disappearing to the Yastrebets gondola 1000m up the mountain where we were greeted by blue skies and sunshine. A few nervous glances and some 'fuck it' attitude saw us down a short steep bit to get to the Suhar nursery slope to try and recall as much of our ski knowledge as possible. Three runs later...the skiing was looking tidier but everything was aching (!), so we broke for coffee as the blue sky clouded over to snow.

      February 16, 2022 in Bulgaria ⋅ ⛅ 3 °C

Apres ski afternoon yesterday was followed by dinner, then bed! Today began out on a quick run down the Rila before getting the chairlift to the Blue Maraki 1 so mum could run it. Successfully completed once, we ran it again before they went to ski school, with Kev and I finishing on a red/blue.

Ben and I caught the gondola to the top of the mountain (for which there was quite a large queue!) and ran the loop around the Markudjik 1 and Suhar before descending on the long Musala Path. The weather at the top was pretty harsh - overcast, snowing and with the wind whipping the snow in your face!

      Markudjik Gondola

      February 17, 2022 in Bulgaria ⋅ ⛅ 1 °C

Early morning start up the gondola this morning with mum and Kev. Beautiful views as we went up the mountain, a far cry from yesterday. We ran the Suhar Green first before mum and Kev departed for ski school, whilst Ben and I ran the Markudjik 2 blue loop up the chair lift. We tried a new cafe today, which had fabulous views but rubbish service! We bumped into mum and Kev and did another blue loop up the chairlift, before running a couple more using the double button lift. By this point our feet and legs were absolutely on fire, so we braved the 10km Musala Path down at speed to get to the Silver Fox for a pint and some food.Read more
