      Battambang, Ekphnom Temple

      December 6, 2023 in Cambodia ⋅ ⛅ 33 °C

Andy shows us what the black-smoked bamboo sticks are that are always offered on the side of the road: sticky rice, in this case with red beans. It takes a few hours for the rice to be ready, including carving and burning out the sticks (for hygiene). But very tasty! Afterwards we drive to a temple that was also used as a killing site by the Khmer Rouge. The moats, which are so idyllic and overgrown with duckweed, were the pits into which the prisoners were killed. Suddenly the place is no longer so beautiful, but the temple cats come to cheer you up. The monks also take care of the needy animals here. We learn that cats here often have curly tails, half tails or even bent tails from birth.

      Battambang Fish Market

      April 25, 2016 in Cambodia ⋅ ☀️ 21 °C

I have never seen so much fish in one place in all of my 23 years, and in the height of dry season with temperatures reaching the mid-forties, well, you can just imagine the smell! Some of the fish come from Tonle Sap lake, however, sadly due to over fishing throughout all seasons in Vietnam and some horrific methods such as electric shocking the water which kills everything (not just fish), the majority are imported from Thailand. It just goes to show the knock on effect of irresponsible cultivation for potentially thousands of people from many miles away.Read more
