Today we went to the Ankor area about a 10 min drive away , Did not realise it was so big , I can see why you need a few days to see it all . First we went to the Bayan temple . Beautiful. Also saw some cute monkeys . Then on to the Ta Prohm temple . Famous for its trees growing over the ruins and the Lara Croft movies . All the carving is amazing and also the fact these were built over 1000 years ago . ( so many photos hard to know which to post )
After a picnic lunch in a bamboo basket ( that we can keep ) , relaxing around the pool was the next thing on the agenda followed by a lovely reflexology session . And another cocktail! After our meal tonight a few of us had a wonder around the night market and saw the nightlife of Siem Reap .Read more

Heute waren es ca. 13.000 Schritte. Das bei fast 100 % Luftfeuchtigkeit und deutlich über 30 °.
Dazu sehr viele Treppen und Stufen.
Da haben sich dann doch ein paar ausgeklinkt. So viel Wasser kann man gar nicht mit schleppen wie da aus einem rausläuft.
Der höchste Turm ca. 30 Meter mit steilen Stiegen und oft ohne Geländer.Read more

Bayon Temple

Bayon is the main temple located at the center of Angkor Thom, a royal complex dating to the 10th century . This 1st picture is a be of the gates to Angkor Thom.
This temple is famous for all it's carved smiling faces. I'm told there are more than 200 carved faces, all with smiles. The pictures are various views of the temple.Read more

Tonle Om Gate (South Gate), Angkor Wat

The South Gate is located between Angkor Wat and Angkor Thom and in 2012 it was one of the things I remember most since there were apes and elephants around and there was no traffic jam back then so you simply rushed through.
Nowadays you have to „stand in line“ to drive through but I still love to do it ❤️Read more

Temple Run in Angkor

Angkor Wat was an incredible temple we had the pleasure of exploring twice, yet we still didn’t see it all. Throughout our two day tour of the Angkor Archaeological Complex we also visited many other amazing temples.

On the first day and after our visit to Angkor Wat, we spent the afternoon driving the 'short loop' visiting many temples including the Bayon temple and Ta Prohm Temple (think Lara Croft: Tomb Raider). The Bayon temple had 54 towers representing each province in Cambodia, all of which were carved with faces. The detailing was very impressive. Each temple we visited was built slightly differently but clearly still a family, despite being built over a 600 year period.

At one temple, we had an encounter with a family of lotus monkeys. They did seem quite placid yet rather curious, so much so a small one decided to jump on Jess to play with her trouser ties, blouse buttons and even hair. You can imagine Jess' face as this all unravelled, although she stayed surprisingly calm as Dan helpfully watched and videoed the event. After that, they were curious about Dan, so had a seat laying back against his leg before climbing on him too.

We ended the day at Phnom Bakeng (known as temple mountain), a 60m high mountain temple to watch the sunset. It wasn’t looking to be a particularly good sunset as the sun went behind clouds, but we stayed hoping the colours may change... and they did. As the sunset colours began to shine radiantly in the sky, the keepers said the temple was closed and tried to usher everyone down. As you can imagine a lot of people (including us) were stalling to try and see the remaining sunset. Luckily, we managed to see the best of it.

After sunrise at Angkor Wat (day 2), once picked up by Sovann again, we took the 'long loop' visiting plenty more temples. Unsurprisingly, they were all incredible, all showing similaities but still unique in their own way. An absolutely beautiful temple complex and we would genuinely recommend a visit to Cambodia just to see this alone. You simply can't appreciate the scale, beauty and detail of these temples without seeing them for yourself.Read more

Bayon and Tomb Raider temples

After Angkor Wat, we went on to visit another 4 temples in the area. The Bayon temple of the smiling Buddhas has unfortunately closed it’s top level, preventing us from getting up close and personal with the above mentioned smiling Buddhas. But we very much admired the beautiful carvings along the entire temple perimeter. We then visited the mystical temples overgrown by the tree roots - made popular by “ a tomb raider” movie. In the evening, we went to see a fun local circus performance.Read more

Am späten Nachmittag haben wir noch die Tickets für Angkor War gekauft. Wir haben uns zwei Tuk-Tuks genommen.
Dann sind wir noch zu einem Hügel gefahren, nach einem kleinen Spaziergang konnte man oben auf einem Tempel sitzen und den Sonnenuntergang genießen.Read more

Bayon Temple

Nach einem Frühstück im Hotel ging es mit dem Tu-Tuk Richtung der Tempel-Anlagen.
Unser erster Stop war der Bayon Tempel.

„Der Bayon ist neben dem Angkor Wat die bekannteste und eindrucksvollste Tempelanlage in Angkor (Provinz Siem Reap, Kambodscha) – berühmt vor allem wegen seiner Türme mit meterhohen, aus Stein gemeißelten Gesichtern.

Im späten 12. Jahrhundert begann König Jayavarman VII. (regierte von 1181 bis ca. 1219) mit dem Bau der neuen Hauptstadt des Khmer-Reiches, Angkor Thom (große Stadt). Im Zentrum der 9 km² großen, von einer Mauer umgebenen, etwa 1 km nördlich von Angkor Wat beginnenden Stadt wurde der Bayon als Haupttempel errichtet.

Seit dem 15. Jahrhundert, als das Reich der Khmer vom aufstrebenden Thai-Königreich Ayutthaya besiegt und Angkor verlassen worden war, geriet auch Angkor Thom und damit der Bayon weitgehend in Vergessenheit. Zwar war das Gebiet von Angkor auch weiterhin bewohnt und wurde landwirtschaftlich genutzt, die meisten Tempel außer dem Angkor Wat wurden aber kaum mehr besucht und vom tropischen Wald überwuchert.

Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts erwachte das Interesse europäischer Wissenschaftler und in der Folge auch der europäischen Öffentlichkeit (siehe auch: Henri Mouhot) an diesem Teil des französischen Kolonialreiches in Indochina. Die archäologischen Arbeiten wurden allerdings wegen des Ersten und Zweiten Weltkrieges, des Indochinakrieges, des auf Kambodscha übergreifenden Vietnamkrieges und schließlich der Machtergreifung der Roten Khmer für Jahrzehnte unterbrochen.

Seit den späten 1980er Jahren, nach dem Ende der Herrschaft der Roten Khmer und der vietnamesischen Besatzung, wurde der Bayon, wie die anderen Tempelanlagen in Angkor, wieder weitgehend restauriert (siehe auch Anastilosis). Beteiligt sind daran, koordiniert vom International Coordinating Committee (ICC) der UNESCO, Archäologen des kambodschanischen Instituts Authority for the Protection and Management of Angkor and the Region of Siem Reap (APSARA), der französischen École française d’Extrême-Orient, des deutschen German Apsara Conservation Project (GACP) und der FH Köln, sowie das Japanese Government Team for Safeguarding Angkor (JSA) und der US-amerikanische World Monuments Fund (WMF).

Seit 1992 wird der Bayon, als Teil von Angkor, auf der Weltkulturerbe-Liste der UNESCO geführt.“Read more

Angkor Thom

It is hard to imagine a larger and more beautiful structure than Angkor Wat, but in Angkor Thom the individual parts add up to a greater whole. First, the gates catch the eye, lined with a monumental representation of 54 demons and 54 gods.
As the last great capital of the Khmer Empire, Angkor Thom set new standards with a size of over 10km2.Read more

Angkor Thom et le Bayon

Aujourd’hui, balade en vélo et tuktuk pendant toute la journée à la découverte des trésors d’Angkor, direction la célèbre cité d’Angkor Thom, la plus grande ville du monde à son époque. Visite du temple du Bayon avec ses impressionnantes tours à visages situé au cœur de l’Ancienne Cité. Le Bayon est un temple royal associé au roi Jayavarman VII et à ses 2 épouses : Jayarajadevi et Indradevi (la Triade Royale).Read more
