      Phnom Kulen

      After a well-needed 10+ hour sleep, our final stop in Cambodia was Phnom Kulen - a national park atop the Kulen mountains, popular for many sites including the amazingly scenic Kulen Waterfalls, the Reclining Buddha, 1000 Lingas and just the view from the cliff at the top of the mountain. We also tried some sweet red bananas, which are only found in these mountains. It was extremely hot by the time we left and we felt super dehydrated, even after each of us had a large natural coconut. Now, we are headed for our next destination - Phuket in Thailand!Read more

      Waterfall and phallic symbols

      Today began at 0730 (why do I do this to myself?). Our first stop on the tour was the river of a thousand Lingas. Shiva lingas are a Hindu representation of the joining of male and female. The male is the column or round symbol in the center of a square or circle, the female, with a spout. Once water flows over the male, through the female, and out of the spout, it is believed to be blessed, similar to Catholicism's holy water. Because it is rainy season, the waters are high and most of the carvings cannot be seen. However, I grabbed a couple of shots off the internet. (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lingam)

      We're at the waterfall now. It's great to get in the water to cool off. But like Vietnam and despite the signs everywhere saying don't litter, there is garbage everywhere. The one kilometer or so walk to the waterfall was an exercise in not stepping in trash. Even the waterfall has garbage accumulated in the eddys, like water bottles and potato chip bags. Once again, what could be a magnificently beautiful area is spoiled by...well, what? Laziness? Carelessness? No or ineffective waste disposal services? I don't know, so let's just call it humans.

      Temples Day 4

      For the last day of temples we went off the beaten track. There are a group of temples which are slightly older than the main Ankor temples, further out from the Siem Reap and in disrepear, as such they are very quiet, we had the massive Bang Mealea temple all to our selves. Having being partially destroyed in one of Cambodias many civil wars, they have built a walkway over the top of the temple so you can look down over the complex and get a real sense of the flow and design and the symmetry that is used.
      Chaw Srei Vibol and Banteay Samre temples were also similar, reclaimed by nature once they had collapsed. A very different experience from the pristine and well kept temples of the main Ankor complex, definitely worth the drive      Read more

      Zurück zum Ausgangspunkt

      Zurück zum Ausgangspunkt unserer Wanderung geht es wieder im stürmischen Schritt durch inzwischen bekanntes Terrain. Wir treffen einige Farmer, die scheinbar von ihren Feldern oder Plantagen kommen. Am Ziel angekommen sehen wir all die Schreine und Tempel aus der Nähe, die wir anfangs nicht beachten sollten. Sie sind alle von privaten, meist hochgestellten Beamten gestiftet worden und zählen daher in den Augen unserer Guides nicht zum ursprünglichen, historischen Komplex. Allein die Vielzahl und das sie gold, silber und weiß sind, beeindruckt uns dennoch.
      Ins Hotel fahren wir zügig und direkt mit unserem Fahrer, über wiederum abenteuerliche Wege und treffen bei Dunkelheit dort ein.
      Den letzten Abend lassen wir dann wieder in der Pub-Street in Siem Reap bei Berliner Wurst (Bockwurst mit Currysauce) und anderen westlichen Speisen ausklingen. Morgen beginnt die Erholungszeit mit unseren Jungs - an den Stränden vor Krabi und seinen Inseln im Süden Thailands.

      Phnom Kulen Nationalpark

      Heute gab es endlich mal wieder etwas Natur zu bewundern.
      Der Nationalpark war nur leider viel zu Groß um ihn komplett zu schaffen.
      Im Park gab es auch noch viele Dörfer

      Prasat Damrey Krab

      Prasat Damrey Krab ist einer der wenigen Überreste der im 9. Jahrhundert gebauten Hauptstadt. Mitten im Dschungel, finden wir innerhalb einer Umfassungsmauer den Prasat Damrei, ein Tempel aus Ziegelstein. Von den ehemals 3 Türmen ist nur einer erhalten geblieben und wir finden Reste einer Umfassungsmauer und wieder typische Symbole des Shiva-Kultes.
      Übrigens ist hier alles super aufgeräumt und geharkt. Die Bergvölker nutzen diesen Tempel weiterhin.

      Nach dem Essen gehen wir zurück zum Parkplatz und nehmen unseren Wanderguide an Bord. Dann fahren wir über eine sehr abenteuerlich Piste weiter bergauf und in den Dschungel hinein. An einigen Stellen haben wir echt Angst um unser Fahrzeug, denn hier wäre ein Allradantrieb und ein höhergelegtes Fahrzeug sicher besser, aber unser Fahrer meistert alles bravurös. Am Rande des Weges sehen wir sehr sehr ärmliche Behausungen, oft nur ein Bretterverschlag auf Stelzen mit einem einzigen großen Raum, auf dessen Boden die gesamte Familie schläft. Unter dem Haus wird das (wenn vorhanden) Vieh gehalten. Die Menschen im Wald leben vom Anbau von Cashew, Mango oder Reis.
      An unserem Wanderweg angekommen geht es auch sofort los. Um auch gleich Klarheit zu haben, teilt uns unser zweiter Guide mit, die Wanderung dauert 3 Stunden, für jede Etappe ungefähr eine. Lange halten wir uns nicht auf. Die Besichtigung des Geländes des buddhistischen Klostergeländes Vil Phrae Kral beschränkt sich auf das Wohngebäude der Mönche. Daneben wird gerade ein neues Gebäude aus Spendengeldern erbaut. Das Holzgerüst ist beeindruckend. Die restlichen silber, gold und weiß leuchtenden Bauten sollen wir vorerst ignorieren.
      Ein weiterer Punkt wird uns mit Start der Wanderung klar, wir wandern nicht, wir marschieren im Sturmschritt. Wir wollen die alten Tempel und Statuen im Dschungel sehen? Dann aber flott, die Sonne geht in 4 Stunden unter und da wollen wir mit dem Fahrzeug aus dem Wald raus sein.      Read more

      End of 4000 islands

      For lunch we really wanted to go the Chez Fred etc Lea, which is where we have been having breakfast but it was shut! But we were more than happy to have lunch at the amazing Indian restaurant. After lunch we decided to try out a pool that we had seen on our cycle round the island. To be honest the pool was pretty grim but it was nice to get a bit of exercise after our very lazy morning. As Don Khon was such a small island it was so easy to bump into people that you have seen around or met in a restaurant etc so it had a really lovely village feel. In particular, we met a lovely retired couple from Devon who were on their first solo, unorganised, trip. They were such a pleasure to meet and share tips and ideas of things to do or restaurants to go to, so we planned to celebrate our last night on the island with them. Fantastic food, fantastic company, our first taste of....... an incredible end to an wonderful time in Laos!

      So as we are at the end of our 2nd country I thought I'd put down a few shocks that I just didn't know about or expect when coming to SEA. Plastic, plastic, plastic, plastic, plastic... I don't think I've seen so much plastic in my life and not just the use of it but the disaster that it causes. There is litter just everywhere because the villagers just can't dispose of it. Everything you get or buy will come in plastic. We have to specifically stop them putting anything we buy in plastic. Even takeaway drinks come in a plastic bag! It's truly horrible and saddening to see the effects of using so much plastic. We drink about 4-6 litres of water a day in this heat. Imagine if everyone is doing this. How many plastic bottles alone are being used! Luckily in Laos we have been able to use water fountains in hostels and if we can't we have a filter so aren't really contributing to the figures, but it's truly so sad.

      UXO caused deaths in Laos. Its unbelievable to think this even still happens after so many years since the wars. 25% of the countries villages are still in UXOs and in the last decade there have been over 300 deaths in Laos due to these.      Read more
