      Indescriptible Angkor 🤩

      Nous sommes arrivés à Siem Reap hier dans la région d’Angkor, cœur historique de la culture Khmer : 401km2 et 92 temples découverts à ce jour, tous plus fascinants les uns que les autres.
      Pendant 3 jours, nous allons visiter quelques unes de ces merveilles!
      Ta Phrom, envahit par la jungle ; Banteay Srei avec ses sculptures aussi fines que de la dentelle ; Angkor Thom, temple massif au milieu des arbres centenaires ; Bayon, imposant avec ses 52 colonnes… et bien sûr, le plus majestueux de tous, Angkor Wat, que nous découvrirons demain matin.

      Nous avons la chance de découvrir ces superbes sites dans des conditions idéales car le tourisme chinois n’a pas encore repris. Nous marchons quasi seuls sur ces pierres qui ont plus de 800 ans. C’est magique!

      La famille française que nous avons rencontrée s’est joint à nous, pour le plus grand plaisir des enfants qui jouent tous ensemble.      Read more

      Today we lended the scooter 🛵 from Leaks sister, so we are on a countryside 🌴 tour. That’s my favorite type of travel: on the motorcycle, scooter or tuktuk. Scooter 🛵 and motorbike are better than tuktuk on dirt roads, because you manage the holes more easily with 2 wheels.       Big Buddha and the Banteay Srei Temple

      We arrived in Siem Reap late in the evening and in the morning were picked up by our guide and went on to visit an active temple with the big reclining Buddha carved into the mountain. Our pictures were made stunning by the young monks in their bright orange robes. We then walked by the river and saw local families enjoying their Sunday, swimming in the river and by the waterfall. We then visited our first temple of the Angkor region, which was made of red sandstone, unlike all the other gray and yellowish temples.       Phnom Kulem Waterfall

      Wir wollten eigentlich um 8 starten aber dann hat uns unser Touri guidekollege noch am Abend geschrieben dass wir später um 10 starten.
      Also sind wir vorher noch ein Frühstück essengegangen.
      Waren dann kurz nach 10 bei seiner Bar und sind dann gleich los, wir drei und sie auch zu 3 er seine frau und sein Sohn 3 jahre.
      Haben sicher 2h gebraucht weil er nie schneller als 50kmh gefahren ist also wars ne lange und hulprilge reise, aber echt cool weil schon der weg dort hin so schön, echt mega schöne Landschaft.
      Sind als erster so bei einen Fluss gewesen der anscheinend heilig war. Aber sehr interessant weil es war ein Loch mit sandboden mit wasser gefüllt und dort drin hat sich der sand bewegt.
      Dannach sind wir zum Wasserfall haben wine. sprung gewagt und haben dart dort bisschen gechillt.
      Haben uns danach noch einen Aussichtpunkt angeschaut und einen Spaziergang in den Jungleforest gemacht. Wo man dass echte Leben in Cambodia sehen kann, wo Leute mit 80€ ein Monat überleben müssen echt crazy.
      Man hätte noch zu vielen anderen Spots gehen können da wir aber den Scooter noch richten mussten und wir eine Werkstatt suchen mussten konnten wir nicht zu lange bleiben und auch der toruiguide musste mit sein Sohn nach Hause. Wir sind nochmal kurz zum Wasserfall gegangen und sind dann such gestartet. Wir sind bei 2 Mechaniker stehen geblieben haben uns aber beide gesagt dass sie uns bicht helfen können bzw. Könnten sie kein englisch.
      Haben dann nach langen suchen endlich einen gefunden der einen Spiegel hatte zu wechseln und den haben wir dann pberredet dsss er ihn heute noch richtet da wir ihn ja zurückgeben müssen.
      Sie haben uns dann zu einpaar Bier eingeladen uns zum essen. Mega toll, dannach haben wir eine frau kennengelernt 32 jahre aus Barcelona die gerade SeamReap angekommen ist haben uns alle gleich gut verstanden haben dann noch bei unsere Freunde einen Fruit smoothie und Crepe geholt und sind dann achlafen gegangen.       Waterfall and phallic symbols

      Today began at 0730 (why do I do this to myself?). Our first stop on the tour was the river of a thousand Lingas. Shiva lingas are a Hindu representation of the joining of male and female. The male is the column or round symbol in the center of a square or circle, the female, with a spout. Once water flows over the male, through the female, and out of the spout, it is believed to be blessed, similar to Catholicism's holy water. Because it is rainy season, the waters are high and most of the carvings cannot be seen. However, I grabbed a couple of shots off the internet. (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lingam)

      We're at the waterfall now. It's great to get in the water to cool off. But like Vietnam and despite the signs everywhere saying don't litter, there is garbage everywhere. The one kilometer or so walk to the waterfall was an exercise in not stepping in trash. Even the waterfall has garbage accumulated in the eddys, like water bottles and potato chip bags. Once again, what could be a magnificently beautiful area is spoiled by...well, what? Laziness? Carelessness? No or ineffective waste disposal services? I don't know, so let's just call it humans.

      Phnom Kulen Wasserfall

      Heute zu nem Wasserfall gewandert. Der war zwar nicht groß aber die Umgebung dafür umso schöner. Außerdem stürzte der Wasserfall nicht in ein Becken sondern auf einen großen Stein, sodass man sich unter den Wasserfall stellen konnte. Das besondere war, dass man genau in der Mitte, wie im Auge eines Hurricane stehen konnte, ohne wirklich nass zu werden. Einer der Momente, von denen man nicht genug bekommen kann. Erst recht, als die 5 Spanier weg und wir alleine waren.

      Davor noch zum Bastey Srey Tempel gefahren. Schöner kleiner Tempel mit außergewöhnlichen Fresken und Skulpturen, die wir so in Angkor noch nicht gesehen haben.

      Nach dem Wasserfall noch zum Sonnenuntergang zum auf einem Hügel liegenden Ko Phom Tempel, von dem man durch ein Loch im Dschungel auf die weite Ebene gucken kann. Die 600 Stufen wurden dadurch entschädigt, dass wir hier alleine waren. Nur zwei junge Hunde wollten mit uns spielen. Aber hey, von denen lässt man sich gerne ablenken. Unser Tuktuk Fahrer hat uns zur Abwechslung mal begleitet. Er war noch nie hier oben. Unten am Tuktuk noch mit ein paar Jungs was gekickt.

      Den zwischendurch gekauften palm sugar Aufstrich werden wir morgen zum Frühstück probieren.      Read more

      A soggy start to the "Tour"

      I had forgotten the south-east Asian propensity for REALLY hard bed – so it wasn’t the best nights sleep but still lovely to be able to stretch out and lie down in a real be not a aeroplane seat. Breakfast at the hotel was simple but quite nice – freshly cooked omelette and the usual selection of fruit, pastries and the like and then at 07:45 it was off to reception where we were met with our guide for our visit to Kulen Mountain
      It took about an hour to get to Kulen (which means Lychee) Mountain and the another perhaps 30 or 45 minutes to drive up it – the area is a national park about 48 or so km from Siem Reap and has a maximum elevation of 487m. It was used as a sandstone quarry for many Buddhist carvings across Cambodia/
      On the bus trip we learned that roofing material in this area of Cambodia must be either blue or red my Government mandate and that …
      One of the highlights of the visit – on what was a VERY soggy morning - was viewing the statue of the reclining Bhudda at the Pagoda of Preah Ang Thom which was built in the 16th century and is over 8m high. Religion in Cambodia seems to be an odd mix of Bhuddism, Hinduism and Spiritualism (land, water, air and fire) plus a dash of ancestor worship or at least veneration and hence we were also shown what are known as Linga which are Hindu symbols meaning a complex combination of life-death/decay-fertility/mother-father. There are 1000 carved into the rock which is the bed of the river. We also walked to a couple of lovely waterfalls .. the second being 25 metre high and safe for swimming. However I have to be honest when I say that although I would have quite liked a swim, I really couldn’t be bothered with the whole wet bathers … getting changed palaver afterwards and so decline to jump in… it wasn’t cold, just kind of rainy and tepid.
      After the temple and waterfall we headed down the mountain with a brief stop at a place where you had great views of the mountain. There were also lots of large red, legged centipedes (which the locals like to catch and roast apparently – ew!) and beautiful butterfly’s which were challenging to photograph.
      Back on the mini bus it was off to lunch… to be honest I was hoping we would be taken to some “local” eating places owned by a friend/relative of the guide but we ended up at the very generic tourist restaurant – the food was fine (Khmer fish curry) but … yeah… just not what I was hoping for.
      Back in Siem Reap we had a formal “team” meeting at 1600hrs – great to see Brett again after almost and year and meet the “team” with whom we will be riding. There was the handing out of Jerseys, a general briefing and then the fitting of the bikes – they are mountain bikes and mine is a bit old and I hope it will be ok – the set up isn’t great but I think it will ok (fingers crossed).
      After “happy hour” 2 for one drinks and a bit of work (2x local beers for USD $3 also inc beer nuts) we all met in the lobby at 1845 for the minibus to Marum Social Enterprises Restaurant where we enjoyed a most delicious and filling meal (although I confess to NOT eating the beef and ant salad… but only because of the beef!) …. To quote their website

      Marum is run by Kaliyan Mith, an NGO that has been working with street children and other marginalized young people since 2005 in Siem Reap, Cambodia. Marum features a winning mix of creative local cuisine, and is named after the Moringa, or 'Tree of life' - very appropriate, as customers will be enjoying a fantastic dining experience that helps build a new life for the students in training there!

      Absolutely satiated we waked back along the river … past the numerous street vendors … to our hotel ready for bed and an early (0445hrs) start cycling to Angkor Wat for the sunrise.      Read more

      Phnom Kulen Wasserfall

      Zum Wasserfall ist es vom Parkplatz nicht weit zu laufen. Gab es vorher nur Staub und Wald, sind plötzlich wie aus dem Nichts Restaurants, Verkaufsstände und - direkt am Wasser - Vermieter von Security Boxen (hier könnten wir unsere Klamotten verschließen) aufgetaucht. Der Wasserfall hat 3 Ebenen, oben 7 m Gefälle und unten 27 m. Das ist auch der Touristenteil des Wasserfalls. Die Einheimischen bleiben oben.
      Bei all dem touristischen Drumherum kommt allerdings keinerlei Idylle auf, so ausgebaut haben wir noch keinen Wasserfall im Dschungel erlebt.
      Wir gehen dennoch baden, denn wegen der Mücken und sonstigen Krabbeltierchen im Wald, sind wir bei 37°C langärmelig und mit Wanderschuhen unterwegs 😓. Das Wasser ist klar und herrlich erfrischend und deshalb genau die richtige Abkühlung für uns 😃.
      Und tatsächlich treffen wir den Managing Director, als wir aus dem Wasser kommen. Er spricht sehr gut deutsch und erklärt uns, dass wir noch einen Wanderguide bekommen und nach dem Lunch dann eine dreistündige Wanderung in den Dschungel zu den Tempeln und Statuen machen. Eigentlich wäre die Tour jetzt sonst zu Ende. Wow, da wurde das Ganze wirklich noch zum Guten gewendet.

      Heute gab es endlich mal wieder etwas Natur zu bewundern.
      Der Nationalpark war nur leider viel zu Groß um ihn komplett zu schaffen.
      Im Park gab es auch noch viele Dörfer
