      Little Beaver Creek Ranch 1/2

      September 29, 2023 in Canada ⋅ ☁️ 8 °C

      Little Beaver Creek Ranch 2/2

      October 27, 2023 in Canada ⋅ ☀️ 1 °C

Read more

      What a week!

      August 24, 2019 in Canada ⋅ ⛅ 14 °C

I started this week off with my first Western riding lesson which I really enjoyed! They picked the horse Shorty for me to ride - I wonder why?! 🤔 He is probably one of the best trained horses they have here, so good for beginners like me! Hopefully I will manage to fit in another lesson or 2 before I leave.

On Friday was my first trip into town for the grocery shopping and other odds and ends, as well as to drop one of the other volunteers at the bus station as she was leaving. Well...we got into Merritt and made our first stop, but as we got back in the truck, it wouldn’t start 😳 She made it to the bus while I waited for a tow truck!! The ranch manager ended up having to come in her truck so we could do the rest of the shopping and recycling etc. It was such a long day but we made it back to the ranch...just one truck down. 🙁

Today we had some guests staying at the ranch who invited us to join them for a BBQ which was lovely - but I had the job of peeling 3 dozen corn!!

      What happened to Fall?

      October 8, 2019 in Canada ⋅ ⛅ -2 °C

A few of us went to our first hockey game in Merritt to support the Merritt Centennials! It was great, and they won!

I think we’ve skipped fall and gone straight into winter here on the ranch! We woke up the other day to lots of snow and minus temperatures!! The snow is now slowly melting but we’re still waking up with around -10C each morning! The ranch is at quite a high elevation (approx 3600ft!) so we’ve had it pretty bad!Read more

      Happy thanksgiving!

      October 12, 2019 in Canada ⋅ ⛅ 0 °C

Happy thanksgiving from Canada!! We had a few of the residents at the ranch who brought some family and friends for the weekend. They put on a huge turkey dinner and invited the volunteer crew to join them. Wow...what a feast!! There was about 30 of us and we had 3 turkeys, a ham and all the trimmings! Myself and another of the volunteers made (way too much!) dessert! Needless to say we’ll be eating leftovers for days!

We also went to an Indian Reserve to watch their annual round up. Every thanksgiving weekend, they roundup as many of the wild horses as they can to separate them and brand the new foals amongst a few other things. They have over 500 wild horses on their land and were out for 2 whole days trying to find them and bring them in. They didn’t get nearly all of them but there was still a fair amount. It was hard to watch some aspects of it, but it was also interesting to be welcomed and be a part of this tradition.

We’ve ended our thanksgiving weekend with some drinks and music around the campfire.

Hay delivery and my last day on the ranc

      October 28, 2019 in Canada ⋅ 🌙 -5 °C

So we’ve been expecting this delivery of hay bales for at least a month now. Every time we have good weather, we are all prepared and ready! And it never came...until today - my last day!

By the sounds of their experiences from previous years, I was expecting to be at it all day, but a couple of hours and 280 hay bales later we were thankfully done! It was such a workout and my legs are scratched and bruised, but it was also (kind of) fun!

I’ve had such an amazing time here on the ranch, it will be hard to leave and say goodbye. But I am off to see a new part of the province and try out something new by volunteering on a winery.

      And I’m back...

      November 23, 2019 in Canada ⋅ ☁️ 0 °C

As we all thought, I ended up coming back to the ranch. I was just so so bored on the farm at the winery that I didn’t want to stay any longer. I felt more useful at the ranch :)

It’s been good fun, even with the snow and freezing temperatures!

The 6th picture is of a mini forest destruction by beavers!! It’s absolutely crazy how strong these animals are!

I’ve been doing a lot of work with the horses as animals to cover other volunteer’s days off and I really enjoy that! It’s so hard when it’s so cold and the ground is frozen, but the animals make it worth it!

Well I’ll be leaving the ranch soon (for good this time) and heading back East to Burlington for 10 days before heading back to Scotland.

      Ranch life begins

      August 8, 2019 in Canada ⋅ ☀️ 23 °C

I arrived into Merritt and it was HOT!! Nearly at 30 degrees and it was only 11.30am! I was picked up from the bus by one of the other volunteers, and then we had some errands to do before heading to the ranch. They only make a trip into town once every 7-10 days so there was a lot to pick up!

We made it to the ranch and unloaded the truck while meeting all of the other volunteers. There are 8 of us in total - 3 housekeeping, 2 wranglers and 3 maintenance. I had a quick tour of the ranch (it’s a lot bigger than I had thought!) and then it was time for dinner. All of the volunteers take turn in cooking for everyone which is nice!

The ranch itself is a private cowboy and county club so there are privately owned residential properties on site, as well as the main communal buildings. There’s a saloon, movie theatre, gym, pool and the main lodge. Its very ‘Western’, like right out of a movie!

As well as the 12 horses, they also have 2 goats and a miniature donkey who love lots of attention! They have given me tomorrow off to settle in, and then I start working on Friday.

      Can I just stay here?!

      September 2, 2019 in Canada ⋅ 🌙 17 °C

I still can’t get over how amazingly beautiful this place is...

Yesterday I had another riding lesson which was so much fun! Shorty and I are now working well as a team haha! And we were trotting all around the arena and through the slalom! Definitely trail ready...fingers crossed for this Sunday!

Then some of us decided to go into town to the Fall Fair Dance. We stopped for sushi for dinner (yummy!!) then headed to the dance. There was hardly anyone there and no one on the dance floor..oops! So we headed back to the ranch and played some pool and foosball in the Saloon.

Today we took one of the boats out onto the lake after dinner. It was fun! We saw lots of jumping fish, Loons and a beautiful sky!

I have less than 2 weeks here before I head on to my next adventure 🙁
