Visite de la forteresse reconstituée (seulement 5% de l'originale) comme à l'époque où elle était occupée par les français (années 1700).
La forteresse a été établie en 1713 et fut détruite en 1760 par les britanniques, 2 ans après avoir obtenu la reddition des français suite à leur 2ème attaque.
Etant hors saison, seul la billeterie et le bâtiment avec les toilettes (et une expo) étaient ouverts. Mais on peut s'y balader librement et des panneaux expliquent qui habitaient dans les bâtiments reconstruits ou leur utilisation.

Suite de la journée avec une promenade sur le sentier de la Vieille Ville qui rappelle l'expropriation des familles pour que ce lieu devienne un parc national. On a vue sur le phare à gauche et la forteresse à droite.

Festung Louisbourg

Louisbourg ist eine heute in Teilen rekonstruierte französische Festungsstadt des 18. Jahrhunderts.

Louisbourg entstand, nachdem Frankreich im Frieden von Utrecht nach dem Ende des Spanischen Erbfolgekriegs 1713 Neufundland und weitere Gebiete Kanadas an Großbritannien abgetreten hatte. Als einzige Besitzungen an der Atlantikküste Kanadas verblieben die Kap-Breton-Insel (damals Île Royale) und Prince Edward Island (damals Île Saint-Jean). Die Franzosen nutzten die Kap-Breton-Insel als Stützpunkt für die Kabeljaufischerei auf der nahe gelegenen Neufundlandbank (Grand Banks). Die 1719 gegründete, nach König Ludwig XV. benannte Festungsstadt, zu der ein geschützter und zudem eisfreier Hafen gehörte, entwickelte sich rasch zu einem blühenden Gemeinwesen. Der Wohlstand beruhte weitgehend auf dem Fang und der Weiterverarbeitung des Kabeljaus, darüber hinaus auf der günstigen Lage, die den Hafen zum Umschlagspunkt für Warenströme zwischen dem französischen Kanada, dem Mutterland Frankreich und den französischen Besitzungen in der Karibik machte. Fort Louisbourg

Nach einer langen Busfahrt und einer kurzen Nacht im B&B habe ich heute mein Mietauto abgeholt und mich auf den Weg zur Festung Louisbourg gemacht. Diese Festung ist das französische Gegenstück zur englischen in Halifax, ist aber wesentlich größer und eher eine Festungsstadt. Heute ist etwa 1/3 der ursprüngliche Stadt rekonstruiert, sehr detailliert nachgebaut und von einer Menge Schauspieler bevölkert, die den Besuchern ihre Geschichte erzählen und in jedem Haus etwas zu tun haben.Read more

Fortress of Louisburg

Today we went to see one of the planned places on this trip, the Fortress of Louisburg. Learned the difference between a fort and a fortress. A fort is strictly military, whereas a fortress is more of a town protected by a wall and the military. It was built by the French. And around 1740ish the British took it over for five years. Then the French got it back for ten years. Then the British got it back and decided to destroy it. It took 10 more years to pillage the place and destroy the fortress. One fifth of the fortress had been reconstructed. Pretty interesting place see.Read more

Louisbourg, Cape Breton Island

We started our day with a visit to the fortress Louisbourg, built by the French in the 1700's and besieged twice by the British. JS was intrigued by the basic, underground toilet. Since it was off-season and all the university students had returned to classes, not all the buildings were open and there were very few employees in period costume. It was probably a good thing because we were in and out in less than 2 hours and were able to head to our next destination, Halifax.Read more
