      Saturday in the Park

      A bit of wandering before supper seemed like a good idea so I whipped out the map and saw an interesting place named Minoru Park right across the street. The area started out in 1909 as a horse-racing track named after a champion racehorse owed by England’s King Edward VII. We decided to take a walk.

      Its large open expanse was perfect for the first airplane flight west of Winnipeg, as well as the first parachute jump. It became a popular landing field for pioneer aviators, a fact that was used by Richmond’s longest-serving mayor L. D. Taylor. In 1928 he was aboard a biplane flying from Victoria to Minoru Park, where a crowd of supporters had gathered to hear a campaign speech. As he exited the airplane he was struck in the head by the airplane’s propeller. A local aviator commented, “It sliced off the top of his head, you know, and knocked him unconscious. They said if he’d had an ounce more brains he’d have been a dead man.” Taylor spent several weeks in the hospital, and eventually survived to be re-elected to several more terms. One cannot resist observing that Taylor proved that a person can be a successful politician with only half a brain. One of the early airplane pilots here became the boss of the little landing strip, so Vancouver hired him to develop their first airport. It is no accident that the current Vancouver Airport is actually in Richmond.

      The sound of shouting led us to an adjacent field where two teams of young men competed in a hotly contested soccer match. Minoru Park also hosts local associations for lawn bowling, croquet, swimming, walking, tai chi, and a dozen other fitness clubs. This sprawling campus hosts a large medical center, the local public library and an elementary school, along with fields, pitches, grounds diamonds and gridirons for every sport you care to name. Besides all this, there are many walking trails that pass through forests, open expanses of limitless grass, lakes and streams. I saw numerous examples of trees, flowers, bushes and plants that I could not name.

      Another surprise. Across the way I heard shouting, so Glenda and I went over to see what the ruckus was all about. There, on a grassy field, on a perfect Saturday, I saw my first cricket match. It was the season finals. One team was made up completely of Indian physicians all cheering their teammates in Hindi. The other team was Chinese. So you have Indians from New Delhi playing a British game with Chinese from Taipei.

      Goin’ to the Chapel

      The first church in Richmond was built in 1891 and moved to Minoru Park in 1967. Converted to an interdenominational chapel, it is now owned by the city and is the site for many weddings and funerals.

      That fact brings us to what we found today on our walk through Minoru Park. A lovely young Chinese couple had just been married in the chapel garden, and we happened upon them being photographed by a squad of professional photographers, all Chinese, by the way. However, Vancouver is full of surprises. The Chinese groom had the beautiful Scottish name of “Angus,” while his striking Chinese bride bore the Hebrew name, “Elizabeth.” The wedding was performed by a retired UCC pastor named Alan. It is an interdenominational chapel, so he serves the city on a contract basis to do weddings and funerals. I chatted with him, asking for recommendations on a place to eat.       Kanadische Weihnachten

      Das kanadische Weihnachten 2021 ist Geschichte.

      Ich habe schon öfters Weihnachten fernab im Ausland verbracht, aber dieses Jahr war es schon sehr ungewöhnlich - dennoch schön.

      Bevor ich am 24.12. meine letzte Schicht auf dem Weihnachtsmarkt angetreten habe, habe ich noch kurz mit der Family pünktlich zum Abendessen geskypt.
      Chrisse, Doreen und ich - auch Dreamteam genannt - hatten dann einen sehr unterhaltsamen letzten gemeinsamen Arbeitstag.

      Nach Schichtende haben wir auch schon mit dem Abbau des Standes begonnen. 20 Uhr konnten wir dann in den Feierabend starten und haben uns mit den anderen Kollegen zum Essen verabredet.

      Am 24.12. hat anscheinend alles zu, obwohl hier noch kein Weihnachten ist. Wir konnten dann noch einen Tisch beim Mexikaner ergattern 😅 Das war sehr amüsant, da wirklich nur Mexikaner in dem Restaurant waren... und dann wir. Aber das Essen war hervorragend.

      Und nach was weiß ich wie viel Jahren, gab es endlich Mal wieder Schnee zu Weihnachten. Was aber auch sehr ungewöhnlich für Vancouver ist.

      Am 25.12. dem eigentlichen Weihnachtstag hier, hatte ich die nächste Skyperunde. Angestoßen wurde dieses Mal mit den Liebsten und unterschiedlichen Getränken. Da es bei mir gerade Mal 9 Uhr war, gab es nur eine heiße Schoki mit einem "Schuss" Amaretto. 🙄

      Danach ging es auch schon zu Doreen nach Richmond. Über Nacht hat es noch mehr geschneit und es hat sich zudem eine Kältefront gebildet. Wir bekommen in den nächsten Tagen -16 Grad in Vancouver - auch das ist nicht normal. Dennoch konnten wir es nicht sein lassen und haben einen kleinen Spaziergang gemacht. Anschließend haben wir das Essen für den 26.12. vorbereitet. Ente, Klöße und Rotkohl - etwas traditionell sollte es dann doch werden.

      Später kamen dann noch die anderen Kolleginnen vorbei und wir haben uns den Bauch mit Raclette vollgehauen.

      Am 26.12. musste ich mit dem Dreamteam um 8 Uhr auf dem Weihnachtsmarkt sein, um die restliche Hütte abzubauen. Gefühlte -20 Grad, das macht keinen Spaß. So gern ich auch diesen Job hatte, bin ich froh dass er jetzt vorbei ist. Bei diesen Temperaturen hätte das keinen Spaß mehr gemacht.

      Wir fleißigen Bienchen waren um 10 Uhr mit dem Abbau fertig und dann hatten wir einen ganz normalen 2. Weihnachtsfeiertag. Auf der Couch lümmeln, Filme schauen, den ganzen Tag snacken und Nickerchen machen. Ach ja am Abend dann ordentlich essen. Auch wenn wir ein wenig Probleme mit den passenden Zutaten und dem Küchenequipment hatten, ist das Essen sehr gelungen.

      Nun heißt es noch eine Woche Urlaub (unbezahlt leider) und dann geht es ab dem 02.01. endlich auf den Berg!
