    • Day 193

      The Big Apple

      September 9, 2019 in Canada ⋅ ☀️ 17 °C

    • Day 144

      Campbellford

      August 1 in Canada ⋅ ☁️ 90 °F

Today we did another 6 locks up 134’ and a total 22 miles. After the last locks (a double set) we tied up long enough to walk over to the Ranney Gorge suspension bridge over the Trent River. From there it was only a mile to Campbellford. The Dock wall here is managed by the chamber. Power, water, showers. A nice park adjacent. There’s another three boats tied up on this side… all loopers. We did docktail with them in the park tonight. More docking is available on the other side of the river and town stretches along both sides. After work this afternoon I took a stroll and discovered some ladies gearing up to do Zumba in the park gazebo so I joined in. So much fun. Today’s secchi was 1.7 in 4M.Read more

    • Day 147

      Lakefield

      August 4 in Canada ⋅ ☀️ 75 °F

Today was a long hot day. We went thru 7 locks including the Peterborough Lift Lock. This is the world’s tallest hydraulic lift lock towering 65’ above Peterborough. I thought I was taking excellent video as we were being transported but 🤷🏼‍♀️ apparently I was not. Sigh! Got pictures anyways. We were pretty tired by the time we tied up on the lock wall at Lakefield despite only going 8 miles…it was 🥵. The Lakefield lock wall has power and showers and it is jam packed tonight. The Trent Severn Waterway BTW is Canada’s busiest waterway. Construction of the waterway began in 1833 to move goods and people town to town and it wasn’t finished until 1920! Today it’s a National Historic Site. 42 lock stations total (45 locks) and we are at 26. It’s supposed to rain overnight and tomorrow with day temps dropping into the 70s all week and lows in the 50s. We are ready !!!Read more

    • Day 31

      Roofgoats of course

      June 1, 2023 in Canada ⋅ ☀️ 27 °C

After she asked me why I was cycling cross-Canada, the face of the lady at the goat shop crinkled into laughter when I said I was working my way through my mid life crisis .."what is it with men and midlife crises!?" she exclaimed... "women don't have time for midlife crises, they just get on with it". Made me laugh and she gave me an extra scoop of medicinal raspberry ripple.

      ...

      33°C + 91 miles = minor sunstroke

Bit spaced. Quite evening with Ray, Danny DeVito and Juno the dog in Brighton. More confidence damaging talk of Ontarian headwinds, mosquitoes, black flies and bears...Oh My.

No WS booked in for tomorrow's journey to Toronto, but a possible for Sunday, we shall see.

The scorching weather is due to break into a thunder storm at some point today - TF. Everyone says it's very unusual for this time of year, but like the Albertian (and now Nova Scotian) fires, it seems nowhere can escape climate change.

Mild surprise when I came across my first Canadian roundabout - they seem to prefer these bloody annoying Stop/Arrêt signs at crossroads which, similar to the UK, you must come to a complete stop at .... even if no one is visible. I rarely obey them, contrary to the mostly obedient Canadians - all that lost momentum horrifies me.

    • Day 19

      Brockville-Brighton

      May 21, 2023 in Canada ⋅ ☀️ 17 °C

    • Day 146

      Peterborough lock 20

      August 3 in Canada ⋅ ☀️ 75 °F

We had a really nice slow but long cruise today. Rice Lake was like glass and the Otonabee River was super pretty but busy due to the weekend. We are now in Ashborough tied up on the top lock wall so we can take advantage of the breeze coming across Little Lake. There’s no power but it’s remote enough that we’ll be able to run our generator. From here we can look across lake to Peterborough proper. There’s a marina in town that we considered but I’m glad we opted against. This is a little more remote and we have a great view. There’s a couple museums here one parks Canada and the other a canoe museum. There’s also some nice Greenspace for the animals and the Trans Canada trail passes by the lock. Tonight is a free concert in Peterborough. It’s Elton Ron all Elton John. We can hear it really well. Total miles today 34.Read more

    • Day 145

      Hastings

      August 2 in Canada ⋅ ☁️ 81 °F

Today we locked thru another six locks, going thru all but one with the same three boats…. On our way to the last lock we came across a young seagull in distress floating in the water. We circled back, rescued, removed a treble hook with lots of monofilament line and safely returned it back to the water. It’s been hot the last couple days. Yesterday hit 91 degrees ! Today was cloudy but still warm. We are now in Hastings on the lock wall. Right next to the boat is a pet store and LBCO (Canada liquor store). Across the street is a beer store and around the corner a small grocery store. So I got all the fixings for Spritz, James got beer, Moki got a new ball and Luna got treats. No power tonight but at least there’s a breeze.Read more

Day 25 Kingston, ON - Rockwood, ON

      July 19 in Canada ⋅ ☀️ 72 °F

      212 miles
      Total miles 4,735

We had a nice send off from the Fung’s home by breakfast with the whole family. There was actually a time that Andrew prayed for us and our safety on the road.

I did my Friday morning zoom with everybody as we drive down 401. Beverly, Dorothy and Virginia.

We then drove 1 hour down the road to Francine and Jim’s place in Brighton. We met Francine and Jim in 2020 in Italy on the cruise from Rome to Dubai. We had hoped to go walking along Lake Ontario but couldn’t because of my right knee “gave out” on Thursday. We enjoyed sitting around their sun room. Jim then drove us through the natural park nearby. Great camping spot. We had sandwiches out in their patio.

We then braved the busy Toronto traffic. One point Glenn had to pull over and take a Power Nap.

We arrived here at Doug and Lori’s place and visited a while before we ate a Thai meal out in the patio. We met Doug and Lori on our very first cruise in .2005. They came through Guatemala in 2010 and we showed them Antigua.

    • Day 184

      Rice Lake

      July 20, 2023 in Canada ⋅ ☀️ 79 °F

We had a long day of traveling. Hastings was full so we pushed on and anchored in Rice Lake. Unfortunately a storm rolled through in the evening, but the next morning was lovely. Michael enjoyed fishing for a bit before we continued our trip.Read more

    • Day 94–95

      Hastings Ontario

      August 3 in Canada ⋅ ☁️ 79 °F

Hastings is our Saturday stop. The daytime high is in the mid 80 ‘s so running the AC is clearly needed. We have a spot tonight at a marina with power. Today we cruised 15 miles thru a large lake as well as 6 locks. The very high lock in the photo is 54 feet. You do 27 feet then move forward directly into the second lock and gain another 27 feet.Read more
