      First contact

      June 10, 2023 in Canada ⋅ ☀️ 17 °C

From Hamilton the TCT wends north of Toronto to Barrie then westward along Lake Huron's northern shores; I had other plans. I'd got wind of an alternative route cutting through the Bruce Peninsula and up to Tobermory where it should be possible to get a ferry across the Georgian Bay - a more direct and allegedly prettier path, not to mention all the fun of a ferry. Sign me up shipmate.

A lunchtime search of Warm Showers (WS) served me up a couple of lovelies in the form of David & Colleen in Elmira; great welcome, lush dinner, fun chat and Dave produced some spare tent poles - winner. Added to that they knew another Manc further up my route in Kincardine whom I should definitely meet and would surely put me up for the night - a call was made and after promising to bring dessert I had a bed for the next day too! I'm finding that there are few things that rival the comfort of knowing where I'm going to sleep next.

      ...

I now know that Waterloo Region is home to the largest population of Old Order Mennonites in Canada, however when I cycled into Elmira I first mistook these old-fashioned-clothes-wearing people for Quakers.
Like most religions/faiths, Mennonites vary in their adherence to official doctrine, but most practice a lifestyle without certain elements of modern technology and hold to traditional theological distinctives like wearing plain dress (even to the point of shunning the humble zip!). I know I shouldn't have stolen some photos/vids without asking but I did wave over beforehand (there goes the Prime Directive!), and it was happily returned by the guy hanging off the farming equipment together with a warm smile.

      ...

The early morning saw us all cycle off together as my hosts were due to join a charity cycle ride. It was again a pleasant novelty to cycle with others for the first time since Brent and Anguite saw me off from Tidnish in Nova Scotia last month, then Dawoud a few weeks ago. It's not that I'm lonely....I seem to be more than happy to occupy myself with memories, daydreams, chitchat and laughter (probably to the raised eyebrows of passing motorists/pedestrians), but it'd be nice to bump into someone else traveling in the same direction for more than an hour.

Next stop antique biking fanatic Glen and his "museum" - can't wait!

      Von Sydney nach Argentia

      August 26, 2023 in Canada ⋅ ⛅ 24 °C

      Canada

      December 1, 2023 in Canada ⋅ 🌧 3 °C

We left London at 11:00 am and we had a lot of time on our hands because our flight left at 6pm. We got to the airport early and then waited for our flight. The flight took 8 hours but instead of it being 2:00am when we got to Canada it was only 9 pm so in the end when we got to bed it was around 5:00 am body clock time. Jen and Dunc who were Mum and Dad’s friends from when they lived in Hong Kong picked us up at the airport and we stayed at their house for the night. They had two really cute massive dogs that we got to hang out with.

On our second day in Canada we planned to get in the car and drive up to a cabin to meet up with other friends for the weekend with Jen and dunc. It was a 4 hour drive and it was in the snow. It was so cool because we had to go into the super markets too and there was a Starbucks in the super market. We also saw a bunch of new fast food places (and there were a lot of fast food places. ). In the middle of the van we had two dogs so it was pretty squishy. We even had a snow ball fight in a Wendy’s parking lot. The cabin when we got there was super cozy, it felt as if it was plucked out of a Christmas movie. It had a fireplace and tons of bedrooms and a spa.

On our next day in the cabin we tried a lot of different foods. We tried Pop tarts, peanut butter and jam which was actually pretty good and whipped cream straight in my mouth, I did gag. We then went into the sauna (which was my first time by the way) then we sprinted out onto the snow and rolled in that and ran back into the sauna because apparently that’s good for your skin? And it was freezing and super hot at the same time. We could also walk along the ice and we even made a snowman.

And on our last day in the cabin we had to get up semi early because people had to leave before a snow storm hit but we did get one more ice walk before that happened. The car ride was good and we got to go out for dinner with Jen and dunce’s parents and I got super full, I had never been more full in my entire life. I ate chicken wings and ribs but they packed a lot onto one plate.

On our last day in Canada we went to Niagara Falls. It was about an hour drive and it was cool because just over the waterfall was the border of America which we were going over the next day. We got a couple of pictures of it and when it turned dark it was all lit up which was nice to see. Then for dinner ( I know we’ve never had so much food in one country on this whole trip) we went out to this classic diner that looked super iconic and had very good food. I loved Canada the food was good, the people were awesome, and it had some very beautiful scenery and I would definetly come back here on the winter.

A Quick Stop in Kitchener, Ontario

      September 1, 2023 in Canada ⋅ ☀️ 22 °C

Sheila & John, Lori and & Richard took a trip to Sarnia where both Sheila & John (Jimmie) were raised, unbeknown to each other. They lived less than a km apart and went to the same Public School (elementary) 2 years apart.
Quite a few highlights for this excursion which might take a few "footprints" to do justice to.
We'll start with a set from the detour we made on the way to Sarnia. to visit the grave of Gloria's father in Kitchener. She hadn't seen the headstone when she was at his funeral in 2014.

      Camping at Guelph Lake

      July 6, 2019 in Canada ⋅ ⛅ 25 °C

Today we took our first roadtrip through Canada. First we drove to Belfountain Conservation Area, where we enjoyed a little hiking and the view of nature around a small lake. After that we started our way to a camping area to spent the rest of the day and our first night as campers 🤩. We stopped at Guelph Lake, a nice camping site located at a Lake offering lake view and a small beachside to go swimming. Our day ended with a beautiful sunset and a bonfire 🔥.

      April 25, 2023 in Canada ⋅ ☁️ 7 °C

Read more

      hospitality done right

      September 1, 2016 in Canada ⋅ 🌙 13 °C

In the 60 hours I spent in Elmira Bev and barb have been amazing hosts and I've squeezed in....horse racing(sulkies...apparently), farmers market, steam trains, horse auctions, Mennonite history exhibit, brewery tasting, my first ever covered bridge, personal tour of a grain processing factory and still had time to sit down and get know my awesome hosts! Oh and let's not forget all of the awesome food, ham hock as big as a baby's head, amazing fried chicken, venison sausages and my first experience of "Puff balls"....giant wild mushrooms, bigger than a cabbage!

I got here early evening on Monday pretty exhausted from the drive up from the falls and a little concerned that I was staying with friends of mum's that I had never met in an area I knew nothing about....that lasted about 30 seconds after Bev answered the door(if that long)... Big old hand shake from Bev and a big ole hug from Barb and the next thing I knew I'm sat on their deck, beer in hand, chatting like old friends and then the magic words, you like country music right? If my brother reads this his head may explode 25th jealousy but I spent the next couple days being driven around in Bev's pick up, through the country with the country music on the radio, old dirt roads and all.

For those of you that want to see the rest of my pictures from this spot...

For those of you that want to hear my thoughts on Mennonites and religion, read on...warning though, religious views can be pretty devicive.... https://goo.gl/photos/bV44Pz6nrnb8wn5JA

      ...
      ..
      .

Quick note about this being Mennonite country, not a lot of people will know what that is, some may be familiar with the Amish who have similar views, but if anyone like myself has a vague idea of what they are but has not bothered to find out(like me for years)...take a minute, we might think that the buggies and old school clothing is a bit weird, but there's a reason behind it that makes a lot of sense to me and, as an atheist with a very logical mind some of their core beliefs are to me what Christianity was supposed to be.

Essentially, in a super quick nutshell,

They said: "we shouldn'tbaptize at birth because children should be allowed to grow up and choose their religious path"

Catholic church said: "we decide, we are the one true church, deal with it"

They said: "no thanks, we will be off then, but it's ok because God loves everyone and the whole point of religion is to live in service to him and your fellow man"

Church says: "nope, you best start running"

And run they did, hangings, torture, meeting in caves, being driven from their home lands, being told that when they died they didn't have the right to leave anything to their children and it would all go to the state... Ain't religion great

The clothes and buggies and super plain churches come from conscious desires to
      a) not integrate into a society which persecuted them for so long
      b) a belief that everything and everyone is sacred so we don't need to tart up our churches or people
      C) cars and modern life are too fast and you don't get a chance to stop and smell the roses
      D) by working hard and dressing humbly they are showing appreciation to God

Now I'm not saying for a second that I've found religion, all I'm saying is, to me...that's the truest interpretation of Christianity I've heard...thus endeth the lecture

      Kincardin - Lake Huron

      July 5, 2019 in Canada ⋅ ⛅ 29 °C

      August 27, 2016 in Canada ⋅ ⛅ 25 °C
