      48 hours in Kejimkujik NP

      August 10, 2016 in Canada ⋅ ☀️ 17 °C

We briefly stopped in Peggy's Cove en route to Kejimkujik to see the the picturesque lighthouse. Arrival into Kejimkujik, just 2 hours from Halifax, was interesting. Up the road from the national park there were a number of wildfires, the biggest of which is still out of control, and the road was blocked beyond the entrance of the park. The lack of rain for more than a month here causing dangerous fire conditions. A good number of water bomber planes were in action to help fight the blaze, picking up water in Kejimkujik lake meaning canoeing on the lake was out. It also meant no campfires were allowed which scuppered our cooking plans...a quick trip to hire a gas cooker and propane in order! The oTENTik was lovely and overlooked the lake through the trees. We spent our first evening on the beach looking at the stars - as Keji is a dark sky preserve the sky was unbelievable and the Milky Way was quite clear. Chilly overnight here, colder than PEI certainly. We made the most of the full day here by going on 8 of the 15 day hiking routes to see the wide variety of trees, wildlife and lakes in the park. Great fun was had trying to ford Mill Falls without getting too wet but the wildlife was limited to that of the smaller varieties - no bears despite being in 'bear country'. We shared our evening meal with a rather cheeky chipmunk who was quite brave in his hunt for food! Ben made the most of his camera course in the evening, taking photos of the night sky. Up early this morning for the 6 hour journey back to New Brunswick and a night in Saint John before heading into the USA.Read more
