    Puerto Montt, Chile

    March 15 in Chile

Read more

I've spent a lot of my last few days on a work project, while making my way north through remote Chile. Timing the hours I would have laptop and internet access was quite tricky this time, but thanks to awesome colleagues and helpful locals, we made it work. Today, I basically spent an entire work day in the phone, finishing up a project :)

I'm so thankful and count myself so very lucky that I get to work together with great people, and all while I'm on the road. In the moment, it's not always easy, while all other travelers go on their adventures and I'm spending entire days in a cafe or a hostel kitchen. But I enjoy what I do and it definitely makes each project fun and reminds me that all I have in life is a gift!Read more

    Back to square one

    December 24, 2017 in Chile

We walked all over the towm and didn't find anything open exca small shop selling alcohol and groceries. We bought some drinks and salty snacks for the night. None of the restaurants was open so we decided to go back to our hotel since the restaurant was open there. When we reached back, we were told that the restaurant kitchen was closed. We requested that we didn't have any place to eat so they asked the cook if he could fix something. He agreed to do sandwiches for us. They had the desserts available as well so we ordered some pana cota as well.
Well, that's how our Christmas celebration went. We we there in the restaurant way after everyone had left, eating sandwiches, drinking wine and enjoying pana cota 😁

    Christmas morning at Puerto Montt

    December 25, 2017 in Chile

We woke up a bit late and made it to the breakfast table just 10 minutes before closing. After the breakfast, Maria came over to our room with the Christmas goodies. We had some sweets and after that, we took some time to get ready and decided to go around the town to see if anything was open.

    Puerto Montt

    December 24, 2017 in Chile

It was raining in Puerto Montt. We took the bus to the city center to the bus terminal. Our hotel was about 1.5 km from the bus station so we decided to walk till there. The bus terminal is right on the sea front and there is a nice promenade along the sea towards the town center. We walked along the promenade and reached the hotel in about 45 min.

    A walk in the rain

    December 24, 2017 in Chile

We checked in and had our lunch in the restaurant of the hotel. After that we all went back to the rooms and took a short nap. When we woke up, it was still raining. We went down amd asked at the reception to find us a good place to celebrate Xmas. They told that most probably everything would be closed but still started making some enquires over the phone. After about 20 min, we were told they couldn't find anything.
We decided to go for a walk and see if we could find something.
The whole city was closed. No shops, no restaurants, nada... Nothing was open. The church was open so we went in to check it. It was lovely and well lit.

    Chiquihue beach

    December 26, 2017 in Chile

We took the car at around 4 pm. They had a buffer time of +3 hours so we would have to return it before 7 pm on the 2nd Jan. The plan was to drive to Puerto Varas but we had given our clothes for washing and we had to collect them at 6 pm. So, we had 2 hours before we could start further so we decided to drive South along the coast for a while amd try and go to the island opposite the port.
We could not find the place to take the ferry across and it was raining as well, so we decided to drive further for 30-40 minutes.
The stop was at Chiquihue beach. It was a stone beach indicating it to be relatively new. We parked the car next to the beach and went for a walk.

    Back to the hotel

    December 25, 2017 in Chile

We walked around the town for a while more. We found a nice hotel with a pool on the top floor. The views were lovely but the restaurant was a bit expensive. We went around the town but couldn't find anything open so we just went back to the hotel and had our dinner and slept.

    Morning of planning

    December 26, 2017 in Chile

For the 1st time in 3 days it wasn't raining when we had our breakfast and went out to research about the tours and car rentals in this area. We visited the tourist information center where we got some basic information about the transport and tour options. After that, we went to the bus terminal to the various tour companies we had seen there a day before. We gathered more information about the itineraries and the schedules.
Overall, we found that since we were 4 of us, it would be cheaper to rent a car and drive to the places instead of paying per head to the tour operators.

Then we decided to check out the car rental options but these were at the other end of the town. We managed to check Econorental but they didn't have any vehicles available for another 10 days. By the time we came out, the other 2 rental companies Europcar and West were closed for lunch and would open at 3 pm.
We too decided to take this opportunity and have some food. I went and had a haircut and joined the others just when they had finished checking the other 2 companies. Even Europcar was fully booked but West had one small car available.

We had a look and felt we would be fine with the size. We needed the vehicle for 5 days but were told that the office would be closed on 31st Dec and 1st Jan so we would have to drop it at the airport office which was 20 kms away. We decided to rent it for 7 days instead and return it to the city office near the hotels etc.
We had been stuck already for 3 days in Puerto Montt so we decided to take the car immediately and head our somewhere. The car rental was from hour to hour i.e. We return the car same time as we take it.
