Von Hanga Roa bis zum Anfang des Wanderwegs sind es etwa 30 Minuten. Dabei kommen wir an Ana Kai Tangata, einem Höhleneingang an der Steilküste, vorbei. Hier dürfen wir uns kostenlos umsehen. Leider ist die Treppe zur Höhle hinunter kaputt und darum gesperrt.
Der Wanderweg Rano Kau Trail beginnt im Vorgarten des CONAF-Gebäudes und ist mit weißen Steinen markiert. Ein Hinweisschild gibt es nicht. Der ausgemähte Weg führt über Wiesen, vorbei an Büschen und einigen Bäumen. Nach etwa 50 Minuten und 250 Höhenmetern bergauf erreichen wir den Kraterrand. Hier haben wir einen wunderbaren Blick auf die ganze Insel und den See im Krater des Vulkans. Es ist leider nur etwa 100 Meter lang möglich, den Kraterweg nach links zu gehen. Dann kommt ein Verbotsschild, obwohl der Weg weiter ausgemäht ist. Nach rechts gelangt man nach 3 Minuten auf eine kleine Erhebung und kann dem Kraterrandweg danach bis zum Tor des Orongo-Museums folgen. Hier ist es ziemlich kalt und windig, aber wir genießen noch einmal eine tolle Sicht in den Kratersee. Für den Orongo-Bereich bräuchten wir einen Guide (mindestens 60 Euro pro Person) und einen Nationalparkpass, welcher 80 US Dollar pro Person für 10 Tage kostet.
Wir gehen auf demselben Weg zurück.
Dies ist leider die einzig mögliche kostenlose Wanderung auf der Insel.
Für eine Wanderung zu den Sehenswürdigkeiten bei Ana Kekenga oder ins Gebiet Poike im Osten der Insel, bräuchten wir einen Führer und einen Nationalparkpass. ☹️ Das ist uns viel zu teuer.

Lebensmittel sind auf dieser sehr abgelegenen Insel verständlicherweise ziemlich teuer. Die Einfuhr von Obst, Gemüse, Fleisch, Milchprodukten, Honig usw. ist verboten. Falls noch Platz im Gepäck ist, kann man zum Beispiel Brot, Marmelade, Kekse, Schokolade, Nüsse, Spaghetti und Nudelsoße im Glas mitbringen. Abgefülltes Trinkwasser kostet auf der Insel in größeren Behältern etwa 1 € pro Liter. Kleinere Flaschen sind teurer.

Schützen Sie sich mit Mückenmittel und Moskitonetzen vor den Moskitos auf der Osterinsel. 30 Prozent der Mücken sind mit Dengue infiziert! Stand: April 2024. Unsere Unterkunft hatte leider keine Netze an den Fenstern.

It takes about 30 minutes from Hanga Roa to the start of the hiking trail. We pass Ana Kai Tangata, a cave entrance on the cliffs. Here we can look around for free. Unfortunately, the stairs down to the cave are broken and therefore closed.
The Rano Kau Trail hiking trail begins in the front yard of the CONAF building and is marked with white stones. There is no sign. The mown path leads across meadows, past bushes and a few trees. After about 50 minutes and 250 meters uphill, we reach the crater rim. Here we have a wonderful view of the whole island and the lake in the crater of the volcano. Unfortunately, it is only possible to walk the crater path to the left for about 100 meters. Then there is a prohibition sign, although the path is still mown. After 3 minutes to the right you come to a small hill and can then follow the crater rim path to the gate of the Orongo Museum. It is quite cold and windy here, but we once again enjoy a great view of the crater lake. For the Orongo area we would need a guide (at least 60 euros per person) and a national park pass, which costs 80 US dollars per person for 10 days.
We go back the same way.
Unfortunately, this is the only possible free hike on the island.
For a hike to the sights at Ana Kekenga or to the Poike area in the east of the island, we would need a guide and a national park pass. ☹️ That is far too expensive for us.

Food is understandably quite expensive on this very remote island. The import of fruit, vegetables, meat, dairy products, honey, etc. is prohibited. If there is still space in your luggage, you can bring bread, jam, biscuits, chocolate, nuts, spaghetti and pasta sauce in a glass jar. Bottled drinking water costs around 1 € per liter in larger containers on the island. Smaller bottles are more expensive.
