    March 19, 2015 in China ⋅ ☁️ 5 °C

Not a terribly exciting day although Ellen on the bus did help me with my Chinese. I can now count to ten and vaguely ask to go to the train station. Essential vocabulary in my case.
Lanzhou is a very industrial town; a forest of lego-like high-rises emerge from the lunar landscape. This was the start of my silk road adventure, onwards to Dunhuang on the night train.Read more

City on the Yellow River at the heart of the development of Chinese civilization centuries ago. Today it's a long narrow city on both side of the Yellow River which carries a high silt load, giving the river it's characteristic color. First is a look over the city from the white Pagoda in the 4th picture. The second is a look downriver to another part of the city where the yellow color is easier to see. 3rd is the main street of this part of Lanshou, and the last is one of the temples near the white Pagoda.Read more

    Bingli Caves to Lanzhou

    July 30, 2018 in China

Today we will head to the chaotic capital city of Gansu province, Lanzhou*. We will have some free time this evening to explore the city. In Lanzhou we will stay in a comfortable hotel.

*Lanzhou is the capital and largest city of Gansu Province in Northwest China. The prefecture-level city, located on the banks of the Yellow River, is a key regional transportation hub, connecting areas further west by rail to the eastern half of the country. Historically, it has been a major link on the Northern Silk Road. The city is also a center for heavy industry and petrochemical industry. Lanzhou was previously ranked as one of the cities with the worst air quality in the world, due to industrial pollution and its situation in a narrow river valley. Government measures to reduce pollution levels have been effective, and in 2015 the city was awarded China's climate progress title. Lanzhou is home to 3,616,163 inhabitants at the 2010 census and 2,177,130 in the built-up area (urban) of 1,088 square kilometres (420 sq mi). By 2018 its population within the central urban area of 298 square kilometres (115 sq mi) rose to 2,890,000 people.
