Start of the party time

Back at the hostel, I was preparing to sleep when Brian our 24 year old owner of the hostel came over and offered to take me along with the rest of the people at the hostel to a club where they were having the carnival pre-party. We packed ourselves in his car and went to the Michaelangelo club. It was a fun night out. There were people wearing costumes and dancing to the loud beats of the latino music. I also got introduced to all the inmates of the hostel while we danced together. We returned back at 1 am. So much for an early night 😁😁Read more

Reconnaissance for the Carnival

After settling the stay issue, we decided to go to Via 40, the main road where the carnival was supposed to take place starting the next day. We just wanted to have a feel of things, just to get an idea about how the stalls are going to be, if there were shops or food stalls nearby etc. The Via 40 was about a km walk and it was quite dark by the time we reached there. A lot of workers were busy building up temporary stalls for viewing of the parade. There were no information brochures or anything. There was not much to do there, so we walked around in the area nearby. The houses had been decked up with carnival figures and buntings. The whole town seemed to be getting ready for the multiple day party. After walking around for a while, we went back to our hostels for an early night.Read more

Food & Drinks Part II

Here a few culinary-photographs:
1.) drinking a super yummy lemonade, made out of coconut water and lemongrass in Cusco, Peru (will definitely try to recreate it at home)
2.) eating churros - what can I say? You can tell by my happy face!
3.) eating trucha („Forelle“) with lots of garlic - I was kinda smelly for 2 days and had some stomach problems after, but it was worth it, haha!
4.) trying „obleas“ in Guatape for the first time, a kind of waffle with Marmelade, Karamell, honey and.... cheese - we bought it from the cutest old lady ever, we liked her, but not the oblea.
5.) did you recognize it? SPÄTZLE! KÄSSPÄTZLE! We missed it so much, we had to cook it.
6.) Chontadura - a fruit, which tastes like a mix between pumpkin and potato, usually eaten with salt or in an empanada, super yummy!Read more

Hl. 3 Könige in Barranquilla

Wir dringen weiter in den Norden Kolumbiens vor. Und das Klima wird immer besser. In Bogota hat es noch geregnet. In strömen. Und das ist normal dort, wie mir Julio gesagt hat. Bucaramanga ist schon wärmer, man braucht keine Jacke, wenn man Abends ausgeht. Weiter in Ocana haben wir schon 30° und hier in Baranquilla hat es auch zwischen 35° und 40°. Que rico!!!

Leider ist in Kolumbien gerade Hauptreisezeit. Und Kathagena (ähm ich meine Cartagena) ist Haupttourizentrum, daher steigen die Preise gleich mal 3 bis 4-fach an. Spontan quartiert Julio uns bei Familienanghörigen (wieder eine Tante/Cousine) in Baranquilla ein, das ist etwa eine Stunde von Cartagena entfernt. Wir machen dann einen Ausflug dorthin und vielleicht bekommen wir die nächsten Tage noch einen Platz im Hostel. Ich bin schon länger in Kontakt mit einem Hostel, dessen Aufmachung im Internet mir sehr gefallen hat. Außderdem ist der Besitzer Österreicher, hat eine Kolumbianerin geheiratet und führt das Hostel als Familienbetrieb. Sehr nett!!

Aber heute haben wir uns Baranquilla angeschaut. Und wie ich von LP schon informiert wurde: "There is not much to see in Barranquilla" haben wir nach dem Mittagessen bei Julios Oma und Tante nur die riesige Shoppingmall besucht, in der kaum Menschen waren, und einen kleinen Ort am Strand Namens "Puerto Colombia". Dort konnten wir den wunderschönen Sonnenuntergang bestaunen.

Einerseits finde ich es manchmal sehr anstrengend, ständig mit Julios Verwandten unterwegs zu sein (sorry Julio), weil ich den ganzen Tag konzentriert sein muss und manchmal trotzdem nicht viel verstehe, andererseits ist das gerade perfekt, um Land und Leute kennenzulernen. Und die Gastfreundschaft ist incredibile hier!!

Ach ja, mit Heilig 3 Könige hat dieser Eintrag nichts zu tun. Ist nur der Titel, weil das Datum passt. Die entsorgen auch ihre Christbäume nicht bis zum 6.1. Heute (am 13.1.) blinken immer noch alle in der Sonne.Read more
