Don’t rent a car from Nextcar, folks. It was a smooth flight. I zipped through the airport in San Jose in no time. The shuttle to the car rental place was nowhere to be found, and the staff at the airport didn’t know Nextcar. After an hour of wrangling to find someone who actually had heard of them, I got a cab to their office. It was now past midnight.

The car rental was supposed to be about $275. It was actually $850 - seriously. What they don’t tell you on CarRental.com or Expedia is that you have to have a letter from your credit card company saying that your card will cover the insurance. And most insurance companies in the US and Canada don’t cover cars in Costa Rica. Even though we purchased insurance online - it doesn’t cover anything. Oy.

The other “fun” Costa Rican fact is that they don’t use street names or house/business address numbers on their locations. What????? I didn’t have internet yet so I couldn’t put Waze on the task. The guy at the rental car place gave me a drawing of the route - badly, I drove around for about 40 minutes before returning to the airport for help. A nice officer drove me to the intersection where she told me - it’s just up the road 2km. Great! What she did not tell me was that I had to turn left at some random street in 2km. Another 45 minutes of driving and screaming in the car.

I finally asked a nice young man who was walking around in the middle of the night where the hotel was. He said, turn down this street, and it is at the bottom of the hill. It was just before 3am when I arrived - or 4am eastern time. I was a wreck.

I woke up to find a delicious breakfast with eggs, gallo pinto (beans and rice), fruit, juice, and, of course, coffee with hot milk. They had a pool (mostly to look at) a nice garden and comfy beds. I hung around reading and relaxing and finally took a nap before I went to pick up Gail at the airport at 6:30pm. That’s when the party started.

Llegando a Costa Rica

No alquilen (comanda de alquilar) un carro de la empresa “Nextcar”, chicos. El vuelo fue suave. Terminé mis deberes (deber es el sustantivo) en el aeropuerto muy rápido. El minivan de la empresa no se pudo encontrar, los empleados en el aeropuerto no conocieron “Nextcar”. Después de encontrar a alguien que lo conocía, tomé un taxi a la oficina. Era después de medianoche.

El carro de alquiler (el adjectivo es alquiler) se suponía que costaba casi $275. En verdad costó $850 - en serio. Qué no dijeron en Carrental.com o Expedia es que tiene que obtener una carta de la empresa de su tarjeta de crédito que dice que la compañía cubrirá el seguro. Y la mayoría de las empresas en Estados Unidos y Canadá no cubren carros en Costa Rica. Aunque compramos seguro en línea, no cubre nada. Caramba.

El otro hecho “divertido” es que no usa nombre para las calles o números para las casas/edificios. ¿Qué??? Ya no tenía internet así que no pude encargar Waze para ayudarme. El hombre en la oficina me dió la ruta - mala. Manejé por casi 40 minutos antes de regresar al aeropuerto por ayuda. Una policía amable manejó conmigo (en su carro) donde ella me dijo - está cerca - 2km. ¡Qué bueno! La cosa que ella no me dijo fue que tuve que girar a una calle en 2km. Manejé por 45 minutos más gritando en el carro.

Por fin, pregunté a un chico joven quien estuvo caminando en medio de la noche dónde está el hotel. Me dijo, gire aquí y el hotel está en el fondo de la colina. Ya era justo antes de 3am cuando llegué - o 4am en el tiempo del este. Yo era un desastre.

Me desperté a encontrar un desayuno delicioso con huevos, gallo pinto (frijoles y arroz), fruta, jugo, y café con leche caliente - por supuesto. Tenía una piscina (solo para mirar), un jardín lindo, y camas cómodas. Leí y me relajé y finalmente tomé una siesta antes de recoger a Gail al aeropuerto a las 6:30pm.
