Korčula —> Hvar (Sail Day 3)

      August 10, 2023 in Croatia ⋅ ☀️ 27 °C

We had a very chilled day on the boat today and got to the town of Hvar at around 11am. Due to port rules, we weren’t allowed to dock in the harbour until around 7pm so we stayed in the bay and were swimming and chilling all day. We enjoyed jumping off the top of the boat, chilling on floaties in the ocean, enjoying a yummy lunch of fish, playing cards and other games and relaxed on the deck.

We then disembarked around 7 and walked across to see the sunset at the point which was absolutely stunning! We enjoyed a couple of drinks before making our way back to the boat, stopping for pizza on the way and hanging out with some of the other tour people.

We returned to the boat with Nicky and Alex for some after dinner drinks as well as enjoying a surprise drone show from the top deck to celebrate the launch of a soon to be opened theme park. It was very cool! After a couple of big nights partying we decided to stay on the boat and chill out and enjoyed some drinks together and hanging out!

      Split to Hvar

      October 3, 2023 in Croatia ⋅ ☀️ 21 °C

      Distance: 46 km. Total elevation: 650 m

Ferry to Stari Grad on the island of Hvar, then a figure 8 route across the length of the island, finishing in the beautiful 13th century port town of Hvar.

Stunning day - followed the road that hugged the coastline from Stari Grad to the pretty towns of Otok and Jesla right on the water. Then past olive groves, grape vines and shaded pine plantations. Then a superb 10km climb with a steady 6% gradient but with a kicker at the end.

A swim off the beach (warmest water yet), then pizza & red wine was a fitting end to an excellent day.

      Hvar part 2

      June 14, 2023 in Croatia ⋅ ☁️ 73 °F

So, after climbing up to the fort and thinking I had missed my ferry, I walked along the boulevard and then found a bench to sit on. And sit on. And sit on. Next ferry was in five hours. Yes, five. Of course I forgot to bring my book. Then I walked some more and saw my ferry on the other side, pulling away. How did that happen? Because I’m an idiot and didn’t compute the correct 24 hour time.

So I spent five hours just sitting and watching. Judged everyone that walked past me. 😂 here’s the lowdown:

Fave shoe is a Birkenstock. Most everyone was below the age of 30. Mostly women. It felt like a Carnival Cruise port. LP says the island is where the cashed meet the trashed. Let’s just say I saw no cashed. But I did see a bride, and that was kinda cool.

      Hvar

      June 14, 2023 in Croatia ⋅ ☁️ 75 °F

Well, what a weird day it’s been.

I took the “fast ferry” to the island of Hvar, an hours ride from Split, and gotta say, I wasn’t too impressed. It’s a quaint little town, but not much going on. Enough places to eat, but not many shops or other things to explore.

I walked up to the fort just before a light rain began, then made my way back down to town.

Did I mention that it’s steep AF?

      Dernier jour à Hvar

      June 14, 2023 in Croatia ⋅ ☁️ 23 °C

      Dubrovnik - Hvar

      September 12, 2023 in Croatia ⋅ ☀️ 27 °C

Das will etwas heissen!

    • Day 58 - Hvar Island, Croatia

      September 5, 2023 in Croatia ⋅ ☀️ 24 °C

Today we woke up to the boat on the move to Hvar, the boat was rocking and rolling and Katie didn’t get her sea sickness pills fast enough so skipped breakfast! I on the other hand had breakfast and wasn’t feeling the greatest after, but onward and upwards!

We reached Hvar late as docking took a while, we got warned the port can be crazy here.
Once we were off the boat we had an hour to look around, we went on the hunt for Katie’s breakfast as we knew the ride had an 10km uphill and 10km downhill!

We met the guides back near where the boat dropped us off, we got on our bikes and started the ride, a short ride through town and we were soon at the 10% roadway sign… yippee! Katie shot off, ‘Passing on your left’ as you say, and I found a rhythm and grind my way up the climb. I was tracking the climb on my watch and worked out where half way was, it was there that I had some water and turned on some tunes to help with the rest of the climb.
I thought I had conquered the hill and started a descent, this went past a look out people were telling me to stop at, I only wanted to find where the guide was stopping us next. Around a bend and for sure the meeting point for the group was at the top of yet another uphill. We stopped at a bar/cafe with amazing lookout over the North side of the Island.

On the downhill, myself and an American I had met on the trip, Ken, chased the guide down the hill. We were told the road wasn’t amazing but I’ve seen worst roads. We were soon greeted by the site of the boat in the port of Stari Grad. We cleaned up and had lunch on the boat (most amazing muffin with cream for dessert!)

After lunch there was another ride planned, Katie wasn’t feeling the greatest so opted to have a nap and I had her e-bike in my sights for the afternoon!

The ride took us to the small seaside town called Jesla, this is where you had the option for an hour walking in the town, swim at the local beach or whatever you wanted really. I decided seeing I had an e-bike I would ride further along the coast as the sea was rough where they showed us to swim. 3 bays later I found an amazing bay with 13 people, one child and 2 dogs on it! The water was calm and warm! I had a swim for about 20 or so minutes till I had to ride back to where the group was to meet.

On the ride back the guides took us through a little village called Vrboska, which is known for the little river and bridges that look like the ones in Venice.

Once back, I got cleaned up and we headed to the other side of the port in Stari Grad for dinner, on the walk back we treated ourselves to some gelato for a change!

      Hvar, Croatia

      October 17, 2022 in Croatia ⋅ ⛅ 18 °C

Today’s morning ride was 27 miles and 2106 feet of climbing. We rode mostly with Russell and Karla and tagged onto Jan, Laurie and Phillip for a while as well. Jan is such a strong rider! She’s truly inspiring. She’s one of a few 70 year olds we met on this trip as well as a couple in their early 80’s.
The long, steady climb was just beautiful! At the summit, there was a swing next to a stand selling bike jerseys and lavender. We bought a pair of jerseys because it had a map of several of the places we rode. The descent was FAST! That’s always the joy of a tough climb.

      Croatia cruise - Day 24

      September 28, 2023 in Croatia ⋅ ☀️ 26 °C

We left Korcila early & headed towards Havr. We stopped for a swim stop nearby & then water taxied into Havr as the boat couldn't dock until evening. We did a walking tour of the town late afternoon. Most interesting thing was the Benedict nuns who make the lace out of the agave plant. It's the only place in the world it's made. Also the nuns who make it have pledged a vow to live in the building in Hvar for their entire life, they can never leave. The town was full of beautiful yachts & loads of people with lots of money. Very touristy but great fun people watching.Read more
