The Istria peninsula has been continuously inhabited since 800,000 BC. Pula is the Croatian capital of Istria. I have to say Croatia, because Italy and Slovenia also occupy small pieces of Istria as well. The ancient regions of Croatia are very important to its identity. In fact the flag of Croatia is a composite the 5 historical shields of its 5 regions. If you look above the flag, there are 5 smaller emblems above the red and white chalkboard. They represent, from left to right: Croatia, Dubrovnik, Dalmatia, Istria and Slavonia.

Istra and Pula have been ruled by the Romans, Byzantine, Franks, Venetians, Habsburg, Napolean, Austrians, Italy, and then Yugoslavia until an independent Croatia was established. It was the Romans that seem to have left the biggest mark. Three are many ancient relics of their rule still left in Pula. These include the Arena (think Colosseum), Temple of Constantine, Amphitheater, and Roman Forum.

During the Hasburg rule, the Istria Coast became littered with cannon forts. We visited Fortress Kaštel, here in Pula which gave us great panoramic views of Pula.Read more

It really was, it's smaller than the one in Rome, but still looks like a full circle. They hold events inside it still.

Pula war mein 2. Stop in Kroatien. Das Ankommen in dem Land fiel mir nicht so leicht. Der Kontrast zum sauberen und grünen Slowenien ist groß. Die Landschaft ist sehr ausgetrocknet, es liegt viel Müll herum und leider durfte ich auch nicht sehr viel Hilfsbereitschaft erfahren. Die Stadt hat viele interessante geschichtliche Bauten und Hintergründe zu bieten. Jedoch ist es mir hier zu laut, zu viel Stadt und es gibt zu viele Touristen.
Ich probiere es trotzdem: Ich gehe in den Wald, weg von den Menschen, aber leider hinein in Müllberge. Hier Müll einzusammeln ist uferlos. Meine Hostelfreundin und ich probieren es trotzdem. Aber gegen die herumliegenden Tonnen, Matratzenüberreste und Tonnen an Plastikmüll kommen wir nicht an.
Als nächstes mache ich eine Bootsfahrt. Angeboten wird uns eine schöne Inselführung mit einem wunderschönen Strand. Bekommen tun wir einen betrunkenen Reiseführer, einen nicht wirklich vorhandenen Strand und eine Insel voller Ruinen und Müll. Gelohnt hat sich die Fahrt trotzdem. Eine polnische Großfamilie, 2 britische und ein deutsches Pärchen machte die perfekte Mischung aus. Und wieder einmal sind es die Begegnungen, die zählen...
Ein wenig frustriert reise ich weiter zur Insel Cres und hoffe hier auf unberührtere Natur und weniger Menschen. Positiv in Pula waren das tolle Hostel und die netten Menschen dort. Wir haben sehr viel gekocht :)Read more

Heute wars ein Krampf! Ohne Frühstück gings um 8 Uhr bei bereits 36 Grad los und dann gings auch gleich steil opsi.🥵 Nach einer rasanten Fahrt hinunter zum Fjord gings dann auf der anderen Seite auch leider wieder steil rauf…🤬 Der Anblick von Rovinj liess dann alles wieder vergessen - einfach traumhaft! Richtung Pula führte dann ein toller Biketrail - meinem Veloständer war dies zu viel und er gab auf halber Strecke auf. Tja, den weiteren Weg schaff ich auch ohne ihn. Heute hab ich Obhut bei einer kroatischen Familie gefunden und mache deshalb jetzt die Stadt noch etwas unsicher.😎Read more

Heute haben wir einen ganz entspannten Tag gehabt, endlich ist es rund um die Uhr warm ☀️ und wir müssen Nachts nicht mehr im Pulli und mit Socken schlafen 🎉

Heute Vormittag waren wir in der Stadt von Pula und haben und das Stadtgeschehen angeschaut.

Leider waren wir mal wieder so intelligent, dass wir bis auf 5€ kein Cash mitgenommen haben und wir ein paar Dinge deshalb nicht kaufen konnten. Zum Beispiel einen tollen Rock und ein Kleid für mich 😭

Am Nachmittag waren wir am Meer. Hier gibt es keinen richtigen Strand - hier gibt es nur Felsen und wenn man Glück hat passt man mit seinen Körper genau in die Felsenstruktur und dann kann man sogar ohne Rückenschmerzen liegen 🤣 aber eigentlich kann man nur sitzen… das gibt definitiv einen deutlichen Abzug für Kroatien. Ich bin gespannt, ob Kroatien mich als Urlaubsland überzeugen kann 🤔

Wir haben in der nächsten Woche noch spannende Dinge geplant 😍

Tag 2, nachdem morgens erstmal der Abwassertank übergelaufen weil sich meine Konstruktion mit Zwischenteil nicht ganz bewährt hat, ging’s etwas später als geplant los😅
Erst ging’s nach Hum, der kleinsten Stadt der Welt, und dann nach Motovun, einer Kleinstadt auf nem Hügel. Nach „kleinen“ Schwierigkeiten mit dem Parkscheinautomaten ging’s dann noch nach Porec, da hat allerdings alles etwas ausgestorben gewirkt und nachdems dann noch zu regnen angefangen hat bin ich dann doch recht schnell weiter gefahren.
Hab noch kurz am Limski Kanal gehalten bevor meine Suche nach nem Adapter für meinen Stromanschluss weiterging..und wieder erfolglos endete..😅 vielleicht morgen 🤷🏽‍♀️😅Read more

Ausflug nach Pula

Nachdem es die ganze Nacht geregnet hat, und die Voraussage für Funtana nicht gut war, haben wir mal geschaut wie das Wetter in Pula sein wird. Und tatsächlich sah es da wesentlich besser aus. Also auf nach Pula. Nachdem wir ewig nach einem Parkplatz suchen mussten, ging’s dann mal in Richtung Arena. Die Stadt ist, bis auf den Teil in der die alten Tore und die Arena steht, nicht sehr schön . Die Gäschen in der Altstadt sind natürlich hübsch, mit vielen Geschäften und Kneipen. Die Arena ist natürlich sehr schön, ich war als Kind ja schon hier, kann mich aber nicht mehr sehr gut daran erinnern🤷🏻‍♀️ Leider hat die Zeit nicht mehr gereicht um noch nach Medulin zu fahren. Da habe ich früher schon mal Urlaub gemacht. Zum Schluss nochmal einen der wunderbaren Sonnenuntergänge 🌅Read more

Pula Old Town

Pula was an administrative center from Roman times until recently and is best known for its many Roman ruins, most notably the 1st century amphitheater (see Pula Arena post).
The 1st picture shows the Hercules Gate named for the picture of Hercules above the arch. Some of the remaining Roman walks are shown too. There are several monumental gates still here
The 2nd picture is of the forum. The temple to the left is the Temple of Augustus and is original to the 1st century. All other Roman buildings and temples are gone.
The 3rd picture is of the bell tower and Cathedral of the Assumption which dates to the 6th century but reached its current form in the 16th century. The bell tower dates to the 17th century.
The 4th picture is of house ruins from the 1st century said to be Agrippina's house. Originally, the wall to the left was part of the wall tif the forum.
The 5th picture is a preserved Roman floor mosaic, and the 6th is a typical stone paved street in town.

Pula Arena

My 1st reaction when I saw place this was "mini-coliseum". That is what it looks like. It is one of the six largest arenas of this type remaining. Given that this a seismically active area, it give credence to the capabilities of Roman engineers that so much of it is still standing.
This arena was built between 27 BCE and 68 CE. So it was begun during the reign of Augustus and finished at about the end of the reign of Nero (and expanded under both Vespasian and Titus).
Apparently the arena was even used for jousts and fairs during the middle ages. Today it is a concert, performance venue.
The 1st picture shows the extent of the building showing why I thought if the coliseum. The 2nd picture is in a tunnel under the structure and central performance area. The 3rd picture looks down on the remains of the functional space beneath what had been seats. Here and on the lower level is where gladiators, beasts, criminals, etc. were kept before their entry to the arena. The remaining 3 pictures look at various views of the arena.Read more

Letzte Eindrücke aus Pula

Nachdem wir diese Woche das Wakeboarden wieder entdeckt haben musste man(n) am letzten Tag nochmals aufs Brett. Alle hatten dabei Freude, auch die Zuschauer!
Danach hiess es wieder einmal Abschied nehmen. Mit all der Übung, gelingt das Tanja schon richtig gut. Am Abend kam dann eine grosse Belohnung, bzw. 58 Stk. Die Perseiden schauen für die Sternschnuppennacht vorbei. Ein Punkt der schon lange auf der Löffelliste von Frau Bünzli steht konnten wir so abhacken. Übrigens waren es nicht 58 Stk. die ganze Nacht. Aber um Mitternacht fielen dann auch der begeisterten Tanja die Augen zu, nachdem Herr Bünzli schon friedlich schlief.Read more

On passe sur des chemins ombragés et on se dit que l'itinéraire de l'eurovelo8 est peut être un peu choisi en fonction de ça car le soleil doit taper fort en été ! Susie ressort le short qui était remisé au fond d'une sacoche. Nous visitons la belle ville touristique de Roving. On profite d'un passage dans un camping encore ouvert pour faire un brin de toilette, mais notre respect des règles nous interdit de prendre une douche chaude, on s'est déjà lavé hier! Nous le regrettons le soir venu quand nous nous installons dans un camping fermé qui a bien verrouillé tous les robinets ! Pour le dessert ce soir nous testons des "beignets" congelés à cuire dans l'eau bouillante, un peu sceptique au départ mais ça sera a refaire !Read more
