      Croatia North of Split

      Yesterday seems like a long time ago when I was killing time by the pool waiting till evening to go to Bari ferry terminal.
      In Italy you expect chaos and delays at any ferry terminal and while I waited at the check in which is 3 kilometres from the ferry I met three other motorcyclists. One from Croatia with his wife on a BMW GS 1250 like mine but the adventure version with the huge fuel tank one from Hungary on a nice BMW GS 850 and one from Austria in a Honda 750 scooter. The Honda guy disappeared once on board and the rest of us had a meal together and a great chat then met again in the morning and decided to travel together up the coast.
      In my last post I said I was heading for Sarajevo in Bosnia and Herzegovina but looking at travelers information they said I probably wouldn't be able to buy bike insurance at the border on a Sunday so I cancelled the hostel I had booked and decided to stay in Croatia and head north up the route 8 coast road which is reputed to be one of the best in the world for bikers and I agree. Imagine the best roads you've ever ridden then add to that stunning scenery following the rocky mountainous coast for three hours.
      The three of us had to enter Bosnia and Herzegovina for about half an hour. If you look at a map it is unavoidable. So in that half hour I had no insurance no breakdown cover etc. Not a problem for a short while and sure enough there was no insurance office open that I could see. So we re-entered Croatia where I am covered because it is on my insurance list of countries and where just waved through immigration.
      Further up the road we stopped for coffee and water as it was once again very hot, then we said our goodbyes and soon after they both turned off and I stayed on the coast road for another two hours of twisty roads. At one point I stopped for lunch and after I couldn't face putting on the jacket in the searing heat so I strapped it on the back and rode like most others in a short sleeved shirt.
      Now I'm north of Split still in Croatia in a up market hostel on a tiny peninsula. I've had a swim and a walk and decided on my destination, route and accommodate for tomorrow. 480 kilometers towards the border with Hungary. Not a problem if it wasn't so hot. I've bought water and juice. I just need to find a way to carry it. I'll attach a bunch of photos from yesterday and today.      Read more

      Gesellschaft beim Kleidung waschen

      Da wir sehr sparsam Kleidung in den Urlaub genommen haben, war heute der Tag der Tage an welchem Waschen anstand. Nach der Besichtigung des Campingplatzes sahen wir direkt, dass es eine Waschmaschine hat. Jedoch wäre es ja zu langweilig, wenn diese dann auch noch funktionieren würde.
      Da sie wirklich nicht funktionierte, entschieden wir uns dazu, die Kleidung nun von Hand im Abwaschbecken zu waschen. Ob sie wirklich sauber wurde, konnten wir noch nicht beurteilen, da es dunkel war. Frisch riechen tut sie aber. Wenigstens das.
      Während des ganzen Vorgangs hatten wir sogar noch Besuch von einer Baby-Katze, die wir leider da lassen mussten (Leider haben wir den Kindersitz Zuhause vergessen ;-)).      Read more

      Churches - Modena & Bologna

      The first church I visited in Italy was the Modena Cathedral & I couldn't believe the beautiful interior with all the marble, gold & trimmings along with the stunning art. I've obviously seen heaps of churches since the first & they all have the same extravagance but I wanted to do a couple of posts on them to help me remember them later. The Bologna Cathedral had security guards as it contains a statue some Muslims find offensive & the church has had bomb threats in the past .       Dubrovnik

      Dubrovnik liegt im Süden Kroatiens am Adriatischen Meer. Die wir uns natürlich auch angesehen haben. Bekannt ist vor allem die charakteristische Altstadt, die vollständig von einer massiven, im 16. Jh. fertiggestellten Steinmauer umgeben ist. Die Architektur der gut erhaltenen Bauwerke reicht vom Barockstil (Kirche des Hl. Blasius) über die Renaissance (Sponza-Palast) bis hin zur Gotik (Rektorenpalast, heute ein Geschichtsmuseum). In der mit Kalkstein gepflasterten Fußgängerzone Stradun oder Placa liegen viele Geschäfte und Restaurants. Leider konnten wir uns die Stadtmauer die vollständig erhalten ist nicht ansehen. Das lag daran das wir nicht's gefunden haben wo man mit dem Rollstuhl ♿ hätte hochfahren können und das zweite die wollten pro Person 35 Euro haben. Und 140 das ist schon eine Hausnummer. Aber dafür haben wir eine Runde neben der Stadtmauer gedreht und sind durch einen Seiteneingang in eine kleine Gasse gekommen, wo das Aquarium von Dubrovnik liegt und der erste viereckige Turm. Die Festung Ivan wurde 1346 am Kai errichtet, um den Hafen der Stadt vor Angriffen aus dem Südosten zu schützen. Früher wurde von hier aus eine Kette hochgezogen, die den Hafen schloss. Im Erdgeschoss der Festung befindet sich das Aquarium, während in den oberen Stockwerken das Schifffahrtsmuseum untergebracht ist.  Unterhalb der Festung Ivan befindet sich ein langer Kai und ein Leuchtturm: der berühmte Porporela, der Treffpunkt der Pärchen und der Ort, an dem die Bewohner der Altstadt schwimmen gehen. Unsere Zeit hat es uns erlaubt, uns das mal anzuschauen. Es gab da verschiedene Meeresbewohner aber wie schon mal in Wien gesehen gab es auch Meeresbewohner aus Recyclingten Plastikmüll. Nur das Schiffsfahrtsmuseum haben wir nicht mehr geschafft. Aber auch die ältestes Apotheke ist in Dubrovnik zu finden. Und vieles mehr.

      Esperando el bus para Split

      Esa nube negra gigante que se ve tras Richi viene hacia nosotros! El tiempo nos ha hecho cambiar de planes y eliminar de la ruta nuestra excursión en ferry a Korčula porque las previsiones decían que había probabilidad de tormentas y ya sabemos como se pone a llover en Croacia...

      Total, que la parte responsable de este viaje (Richi) ha decidido que lo mas seguro era el bus y allá que hemos ido a comprar un billete para Split (pasando por Bosnia). Ahora toca esperar, pero aunque llueve vamos a ir a ver el puerto de los ferrys antes de irnos de Dubrovnik - Ains, que penita, nos ha gustado mucho.      Read more
