      September 27, 2023 in Croatia ⋅ 🌙 23 °C

So we took off on foot for yet another adventure to find waters to swim in. We discovered this local park complete with marinas, playgrounds, picnic areas and coves to swim in. Most people in the town could not come today but that was ok. More strudel friends. PS There’s always birding happening tooRead more

You know me: student of grocery stores

      September 27, 2023 in Croatia ⋅ 🌙 23 °C

I just looked back at todays videos and had to laugh at this one of the grocery store. I did some hanging out here and will do so at more markets . I got food for our day at the beach… cheese, fruit, crackers etc for about $7.20. Food is very reasonable. If it says BIO on the label it’s organic. Walk with me at this clean store with good music and not crowded either. Plus at the front is a recycle center.Read more

      At The Local Swim Beach

      September 26, 2023 in Croatia ⋅ ☀️ 27 °C

We forsook the resort beach, blue striped cabanas and drink delivery towel-side to hang with the locals and dip into the Adriatic Sea. Our walk through fig-tree neighborhoods and an array of laundry lines brought us to a park with a soft pebble beach. The warm was refreshing as the warm day felt around 85 degrees. Plus you can basically change anywhere because it’s Europe. PS No German Shepards allowed we guessed. That seems wrong. Lol.Read more

      Split Day One

      June 13, 2023 in Croatia ⋅ ☀️ 77 °F

It’s a bustling port city! Sunburned kids on holiday fill the streets. If I could sell aloe plants here, I’d be a millionaire!

My lovely hotel is a 15 minute walk from the seaside boulevard, away from the maddening crowds. It’s a charming and quaint place, and my host has been so kind and helpful. Based on her recommendations, I went to the outdoor market and bought some fruit. 😊Read more

Day 17 - From Kaštela to Split

      August 16, 2022 in Croatia ⋅ ☀️ 30 °C

The kitten woke me up super early at around 5:30am by walking over my face. 🐈‍⬛ 😅 But she was still cuddly and layed down again, so I found no need in getting up so early. I planned to arrive at the vet around 10am, half an hour before arriving I should give a croatian woman a call for further instructions at the vet. So I thought I'd have plenty of time to pack and get there.
Well, I should have packed up this early because around 7am a local guy came to pick some figs from the tree next to my tent. 🥴 Let's say he wasn't amused about me being there and clapped his newspaper against the tent, but once he saw the kitten he didn't bother much anymore but I started packing up anyways then. He basically ignored me. 🙈😅 I don't think it was his olive tree yard but a neighbour or so and he was "stealing" the figs. I was stressed slightly anyways. 😅🥴

Even though it was only like 17km to the vet in Split, it took forever. I didn't want to go on the bigger roads with the kitten, so I trusted komoot in sending me on an alternative route - huge mistake, again. 🙈 Not to talk about super steep gravel (!) roads that ended up in road closure due to construction (which I realized after pushing the bike up the hill for at least 10 min, struggling to keep the kitten in the basket), I also ended up with no road at all on a roman historical site at 9am. At least it offered a beautiful view on Split. 🥴 I managed to get over it with the help of three German girls walking their dog. For the last six kilometers I've sworn myself to not get off the main road anymore, even though the ride through Split was hilly as hell.
I arrived at the vet around 10:20am and Marian was already waiting there. I tried multiple times to reach the croatian woman, but couldn't get through. After calls back and forth between the NGO we finally got hold of someone who told the vet about what to do (some legal issues with the quarantine time had to be discussed) and we finally got to have the appointment.

I didn't name the little kitten until then because I didn't want to get too attached since I may not be able to keep her. Also, I wasn't 100% sure about the gender. It is a she and they required me to name her for her documents. I named her "Mali", it's croatian and basically means "little". I liked the sound of it. :)

So the vet found that Mali has a previous injury on her back leg, a broken hip that healed the wrong way. The vet also told me that if she's not using the leg, it may be better to amputate it. After the X-ray, Mali got chipped and vaccinated, and finally got her travel papers. I will go to a vet once we're in Germany to get a second opinion on the leg. But in my opinion she's pretty fine with the leg and using it to jump and run around the appartment. The vet didn't see that since she was just sitting down on the floor frightened and not walking. So far from seeing her using the leg, I don't think it should be amputated, but will get a second opinion from another vet.

I was so glad to get in the car and back to Šibenik once we were done in Split instead of going back on my bike. I think Mali agrees..

      Split

      June 21, 2018 in Croatia ⋅ ⛅ 28 °C

Although the train was late in the evening arriving, the front of the popular Croatian seaside resort of Split was bustling with bars and restaurants as I made my way to my lovely modernised studio apartment in the old town. What did we do before Google maps? The town reminded me of a very upmarket Blackpool, busy mainly with young people from all over Europe on holiday.

After a good night’s sleep I set off to find the main attraction of Split - Diocletian’s Palace - built as a retirement home for the Roman Emperor Diocletian at the turn of the 4th century AD, only to find it was virtually on my doorstep. I enjoyed a guided walking tour of this fascinating place from a somewhat zany guide, who seemed like she had had had too many years on the wacky backy.

Given the heat again, I headed for the city beach in the afternoon, only a 15 minute walk away and enjoyed a lovely swim in the sea. Two British lads were showing off their sporting prowess in the water - throwing a frisbee to each other while holding a can of lager. Then in the evening off to cross the Adriatic once again, only a bit further north, this time from Split, Croatia to Ancona, Italy.

Farewell Croatia, it’s been nice getting to know you, even although it’s been all too short.

      More Zagreb

      June 21, 2018 in Croatia ⋅ ⛅ 23 °C

Did I say what a beautiful city Zagreb was? Had a lovely walk around today again in the warm sunshine. Took in Ban Jelačić Square - the main meeting point; the twin towered Cathedral of the Assumption of our Blessed Virgin Mary - the emblem of the city; the Dolac fruit and vegetable market; the Botanic Gardens; and some of the lovely Art Nouveau buildings that dot the city. Took the world’s shortest passenger cable railway up to the Upper Town and it was even prettier, with its cobbled streets, St Mark’s Church and the Stone Gate.

Not one for museums when the sun is shining, I couldn’t resist the Museum of Broken Relationships. This very unusual museum was recommended to me by my friend Lorraine Wilson, in her book Facing Forwards, about her 3 month solo train trip round Europe which has been an inspiration for my trip. Well worth a read. The exhibits have been donated by members of the public and each have a short explanation of how it related to the end of a relationship. It was powerful and I was in floods more than once. To console visitors, the attached café offered ‘beers as cold as your ex’s heart.’

To recover from all that emotion, I treated myself to afternoon tea at the fabulous Esplanade Hotel, built in 1925 to provide top-notch accommodation for passengers on the Orient Express, which made one of its stops at Zagreb. Apparently the locals were shocked at a performance by provocative dancer Josephine Baker in 1929.

All too soon it was back in the rails and off to the Croatian coastal resort of Split, with beautiful lush scenery all the way. But I loved Zagreb and will be back.
