    • Day 92

      Completely Unnecessary Update

      September 8, 2023 in Croatia ⋅ 🌙 22 °C

Days 90 & 91: (Another long one, sorry)
I've been all over the place the past couple of days. From considering turning my adventure into a spontaneous backpacking trip, to contemplating taking a random flight to Nepal; it's hard to *walk* away from the walk, but I've been feeling the need to claw back some freedom rather than feeling this is something I have to be doing right now. Don't get me wrong, I love hiking, and this adventure has been everything and more than I hoped it to be, but the amount I sacrifice for it day-to-day means that, with the end still not in sight after one 2,500 km chunk, I need to at least feel I'm making my own decision to be here. It's true that every walk has meaning, and to me this one has many, but I think I'm at peace with the fact that those meanings have been realised for me already, even if there hasn't been the glory of the finishline. While it's a strange thing to feel disappointed in myself for feeling this way after such a long time spent on the road, failure is only a part of success, and one thing's for sure. I'll be back. Whether it's in a few days or in a year. One day, I *will* reach Istanbul by foot, either that or I'll die trying, but when I do, the feeling *will* be unimaginable.

Last couple of days: once a hiking mission, this thing has currently mutated into a hitchhiking bonanza. Yesterday, I took the journey out to have a gander round the island of Rab, with the help of a lovely Hungarian couple to skip out the boring bits. To be honest, didn't really pay much attention to the island itself as my mind was elsewhere, but it seemed nice enough, definitely more temperate than the mainland. Perhaps more dramatic, though, was the dodgy hitchhike back; I had to hitch a ride to reach the ferry back in time, only about a 3 minute drive, but boy, did I feel uncomfortable. Guy put his hand on my knee in a very unsettling way not once but twice, and I was a very relieved man to be out of that van once at the ferry terminal. Today, I hitchhiked again; an Austrian couple in a campervan kindly helped me on my way down into Starigrad Paklenica. I had no idea where I was planning on going from there (told you I was a mess), so I've just gone, well... nowhere. I've decided to settle in a cheap campsite here, where I've had the sheer delight of meeting Judith, a Swiss girl so kind that she shared a fancy Swiss freeze-dried meal with me over an evening of chatting, and even bought me beer and a dessert. What did I do to deserve that?! The kindness of strangers always amazes me :)

      Starigrad-Paklenica

      May 4, 2023 in Croatia ⋅ ☀️ 21 °C

Hier in Starigrad-Paklenica liegt unsere dritte Unterkunft.

      September 4, 2022 in Croatia ⋅ ☀️ 25 °C

      Nils Holgerson....

      June 10, 2022 in Croatia ⋅ ☁️ 20 °C

      ....fliegt mit den Gänsen davon....🕊🕊🕊

      🎼🎵🎶🎵🎼

      June 10, 2022 in Croatia ⋅ ⛅ 21 °C

      Slovenia, really?

      May 24, 2023 in Croatia ⋅ ☁️ 75 °F

Slovenia is really a country all on its own. Melanie Trump was born here. It’s does better economically than others around. Mainly it’s tucked under Austria, above Croatia and beside Hungary. Americans learn geography by who we bomb so it’s okay. (Iran or Iraq, still don’t know which is which). I think the coast is gorgeous but they only got a little after separating from Yugoslavia. Just 47 km, that’s 29 miles in Freedom Units. The rest is mountains and forests, sounds good to me.
Watched the sun go down on a hill top so had to sleep in the woods. 100 Euros if I get caught, didn’t. Can you see my tent in the trees?
Aquilea was an ancient Roman town I ran into, technically just inside Italy but nobody in togas. Weird to see tile work that ancient Romans walked on in bare feet.
Down from the mountains to the Adriatic Sea (that’s what this part of the Mediterranean Sea is called) for a fish market.
That is what’s called a sailing yacht. Bezos now has one bigger than all the rest. (that’s not it) Undersail it really must be breathtaking. But as I’ve been told by someone who knows, the bigger the boat the less it actually goes out and ever gets used.
A pair of Apersol spritzes. Why am I obsessed? Never tasted Zima either.
Next is plain old world technical problem solving.
Last is just a point of pride found a long way from Pittsburgh.

      Weiter geht's...

      June 11, 2022 in Croatia ⋅ ☀️ 23 °C

    • Day 42

      Paklenica

      October 11, 2019 in Croatia ⋅ ⛅ 11 °C

Today was a great day! We woke up early, drove 2 hours and then arrived in Paklenica. There, we found a good spot to climb and got set up. We did 4 routes, with a break in between for lunch and I lead climbed 3 of them. In the morning, climbers were just starting to arrive, but by the afternoon there were lots of tour groups, hikers and other climbers.
We did some pretty easy routes, but the rock was really polished in most places because so many people climb there, which made the routes a little harder. The rock was also really sharp in some places where it was the only thing to grab and it really hurt.
My mom even tried climbing, and despite her fear of heights, she made it around 20m up the wall. The only issue was when she tried to belay with a gri-gri which she had never used before while my dad climbed. She couldn’t lower him, so he had to clip himself into the top bolt with a personal harness while I took over the belaying and lowered him.

It also wasn’t too hot. We were surrounded on both sides by rocks, so they blocked out most of the sun and in the morning we were actually cold. Because of this, we were able to climb for longer than we usually would. When the sun came out in the afternoon, the tour groups started to arrive. They would crowd around me while I belayed and some people would stand a few inches away from me taking pictures of what I was doing which was very distracting.
The climbing atmosphere here was similar to the one in Skaha near Kelowna when we went there.

When we were done climbing, we went to a cafe called Dinko’s and then went to a grocery to get snacks for the ride home. We drove 2 hours to get home, and then had dinner.
