      Rijeka, Split, Kotor

      May 27 in Croatia ⋅ ☀️ 21 °C

Arrived in Rijeka to a fab accordion band, great welcome to the old country! Wandering the ‘old town’ is what we seem to do each day, mainly from 13th century or so- yep, they’re old! Beautifully preserved, worn smooth cobblestones and soft colours.
We’ve seen so many school groups every day- they are very proud of their countries and heritage and want their children to learn to be too.
We hiked around the waterfalls in Krka National park in the mountains above Split, very pretty.
Started today with a tuk tuk ride around Boka Bay in Kotor, Montenegro, one of the newest countries in the world after gaining independence in 2006.
      Couldn’t pick a favourite, loving it all😍

      Day 13 – Cycle Skrip & Pucisca

      October 8 in Croatia ⋅ 🌧 18 °C

I decided it was time to see if I could run. I went out just after 6:15 AM – it was still dark, but I could follow part of the route we biked yesterday along the seaside. A beautiful morning and running was a nice way to see. We had breakfast at the hotel then met to discuss the days routes with our VBT guides.
Today’s bike ride was a challenging hill right at the beginning out of the hotel. We travelled only about 8 KM until we reached an old olive oil plant. We all got to taste grappa with olive oil. We were given a demonstration on how the olive oil was produced and then an opportunity for tasting the oils. Really a nice stop, maybe a bit too long though. We then got back on the bikes and traveled up and down lots more hills until we descended into Pucisca which is a seaside town. There we were able to grab some lunch on our own and then we had a visit to the stonecutter’s school. Brac’s stone has been used for the construction of some of the world’s most famous buildings, including Diocletian’s Palace in Split which we toured on Sunday on our walking tour. But it also was used in the White House in Washington, DC. The student’s attend this school as ‘high school’ for four years mastering this skill. It is also a regular high school, so they are ready to attend college or go to work.
The group was then heading back to the hotel which was a reverse of what we did to get to the location. After the stops Bob was too sore to continue, so we rode our bikes to the van and caught a ride back with one of the leaders.
Tonight, we had a Croatian lesson which helped us learn common terms that we might need out on the road. We then were divided into two groups of 11 and were treated to dinner at a local’s home. The dinner was delicious with so many courses. Such a wonderful way to get to know the culture in Croatia.

Day 12 - Split to Brac Island

      October 7 in Croatia ⋅ ☁️ 16 °C

We made our way to the meeting point from our apartment with the rest of the bike tour group. Our bags were collected and taken to the ferry for transport to the island.
We had a group meeting before we all walked to the ferry for the transfer to our hotel on Brac Island. Our group contains 22 people. All but us six from the United States. Also of note, out of the 22 riders, our group of six and one other lady from Utah are riding road bikes, everyone else chose electric bikes. Should we be concerned? The VBT guides are local to Croatia and Slovenia.
The water was beautiful and the views stunning. Once on land we were taken in van to the hotel. Our rooms were ready with our luggage set outside the doors. We had a few hours on our own for lunch before we all met for a safety meeting and then bike fittings. We did a very short ride along the shoreline and up a hill to test the gears and become comfortable on the bikes. Was beautiful and so nice to see the sun.
We then returned the bikes where they were locked up for the night outside the hotel room. We then were given about an hour to get ready to meet for dinner. We were again put in the van and taken to a welcome cocktail reception in the village of Dol where we all got to sample grappa on the restaurant’s terrace, followed by a traditional Brac Island dinner. Bob had the octopus, and I had the meat which were both cooked in big pots with potatoes and vegetables. Lots of wine and all very enjoyable. A good opportunity to meet some of the others on our tour. We then got a bit of a tour of the castle which is the restaurant.
We had a really yummy dessert of cake with a sweet walnut mixture. Just a lovely evening, starting to get a bit cool, but still nice for October.

      Länderwechsel Kroatien

      September 9 in Croatia ⋅ 🌩️ 22 °C

Gute 684.000 leben hier. Zum Vergleich, Bremen ca 100k weniger.
Klein, überschaubar. Uppertown ist der "nice to be".

Mal schauen, was in Zagreb geht.

Flexibles reisen ist was feines :)

Day 14 – Vidova Gora to Milna

      October 9 in Croatia ⋅ ☁️ 17 °C

We had a bad storm overnight, but thankfully by the time we awoke it was done – the sea was calm, and the rain stopped. The ride leaders were still a bit worried about the roads, so they delayed our start by half an hour. We were treated to Vanja leading us in a stretching class by the Adriatic Sea. What could be better than starting our day this way.
After that we all got into the van and were transferred to the Vidov Agora which is 778 M above sea level and is known as the highest peak of Brac and of all Croatian Islands. We had an opportunity to walk around and take photos before getting onto the bikes for our descent.
We rode through a forest of black pine and through villages of Nerezischa and Lozisca. We then traveled down into the port of Milna which is known as the most beautiful marina on the island. We were treated to lunch there as a group.
The second ride of the day was from there, which meant UPHILL. Bob did well with the first part, but the idea of climbing after the long lunch break was going to be too challenging on his knee. I went with the others, and it was tough, but got a reward in Supetar with gelato.
After the gelato stop it was a short 10 KM back to the hotel and only one more tough little climb.
Tonight, we are on our own for dinner. We chose a very nice restaurant with great pizza with Janet, Gary, Sharon & Steve. Tomorrow is a travel day to the next island, so no biking tomorrow, just some walking tours.

    • Day 8

      Rijeka

      September 2, 2023 in Croatia ⋅ ☀️ 30 °C

Read more

      Rijeka - Parkplatz-Tetris

      July 7, 2023 in Croatia ⋅ ☀️ 25 °C

      Rijeka - Bauernmarkt

      July 6, 2023 in Croatia ⋅ ⛅ 23 °C

Ab zum Frühstücken ins Zimmer 🥰😋Read more

      Birkenstock & Gumbies-Tour

      July 5, 2023 in Croatia ⋅ ☀️ 26 °C

😍😍Read more

      Rijeka - keine Touristadt?

      July 5, 2023 in Croatia ⋅ ☀️ 27 °C
