    Fjaka lifestyle

    January 26 in Croatia ⋅ ⛅ 15 °C

This trip was so much fun. I learned so much about Croatia and the fjaka lifestyle of taking things slow. I have to say I enjoyed taking things slow until every waiter decided to participate as well..... Anyway, I decided to keep notes while I was there so I'm just going to list some of my favorite things I learned and did!

    1. Water is free again! In Italy they never bring water to your table unless you order it. In Croatia I got water brought to me with everything including just a coffee!!

    2. The best thing to eat in Croatia is a cruffin. Croissant shaped like a muffin with cream in the middle. It was AMAZING

    3. There are heart souvenirs all over Croatia and Zagreb. They all have mirrors on the center of them. They are meant to be given to someone you love because when you give them your heart, they see what you love inside of the heart.

    4. They fire a canon at noon everyday right before the church bells go off around the city. This has been a tradition since 1877. The legend is that when Croatia was at war with the Ottomans, Zagreb was never invaded. They were unable to defend themselves against the Ottomans because they were poor and out of resources. They had one chicken left in the whole city which they used to trick the Ottomans. They shot the chicken out of a canon, and it landed on the plate of the Ottoman emperor. This made the Ottomans think they had so much food that they were tossing it away. The Ottomans feared their wealth and power and never tried to invade Zagreb.

    5. Saturdays are the days to show off all the money that you don't have. Everyone dresses up and goes out to shop at markets and eat at restaurants.

    6. The markets in Zagreb all have red umbrellas. The legend of why they're all red is that they used to be grey. A boy and a girl fell in love and kissed under one of the umbrellas and turned it red. Now all of the umbrellas in the city are red.

    Zagreb

    June 7, 2024 in Croatia ⋅ ☀️ 29 °C

Zagreb has a distinctively edgy, almost dystopian feel. Graffiti is everywhere, and you might find yourself exploring old WW2 bunkers. We visited the Nikola Tesla Museum and got immersed in the genius's life and inventions. Wandering through some lovely parks, we noticed they were surrounded by buildings that seemed either dilapidated or under repair, adding to the city's gritty, wartime atmosphere. Very hot but a nice place to end another stint of travel!Read more

    Zagreb Day 3.3

    April 29, 2024 in Croatia ⋅ ☀️ 26 °C

After lunch we wandered to the theatre and through the parks to the botanical garden. We arrived at the garden just before 2 and the guy was like it is free today, but we are only open until 2:30. So we had a super quick wander through! It was not that big, but still fun and we saw some new us carnivorous plants which I enjoyed!Read more

    Zagreb: Donji Grad (II)

    December 9, 2023 in Croatia ⋅ ☁️ 2 °C

    September 7, 2023 in Croatia ⋅ ☀️ 27 °C

🌊Read more

    Zagreb, Croatia

    September 24, 2023 in Croatia ⋅ ☁️ 59 °F

On the way to Ljubljana, Slovenia we made a pit stop at the Upper Town of Zagreb, the capital of Croatia. Zagreb is known for its rich history, charming architecture, and vibrant cultural scene. The city is divided into Upper Town (Gornji Grad) with its historic core, featuring landmarks like St. Mark's Church, and Lower Town (Donji Grad) with bustling streets, parks, and museums. Zagreb offers a mix of old-world charm and modernity, making it a dynamic European city.

Built between 1242 and 1266, the Stone Gate (Kamenita vrata) is one of Zagreb's most iconic landmarks. It's a historic city gate located in the Upper Town (Gornji Grad) of Zagreb, Croatia. The gate is unique because it's the only remaining medieval city gate of the original four that once protected the town.

What makes the Stone Gate particularly special is the small chapel within it, dedicated to the Virgin Mary. According to local legend, in 1731, a devastating fire swept through Zagreb, destroying much of the city. The only thing left standing in the path of the fire was the Stone Gate, and within it, a painting of the Virgin Mary and baby Jesus. This event is considered a miracle and the site has since become a place of pilgrimage and devotion. Today, the Stone Gate and its chapel serve as a spiritual and historical symbol of resilience for the people of Zagreb. The gate is also a popular stop for visitors exploring the city's historic quarter.

    zagreb

    July 18, 2023 in Croatia ⋅ ⛅ 29 °C
