      Split

      May 1, 2023 in Croatia ⋅ ☁️ 20 °C

      Bikes

      July 6, 2023 in Croatia ⋅ ☀️ 28 °C

Despite a big night and a slow morning, we thought it would be a good idea to explore around Split itself. We had told the ladies at the front desk that we planned to go find some electric bikes and wander. She jumped on the chance to show us the best places to go and what to see. She also explained that she had bikes to rent to us for just 10 euros for the whole day. She then gave us the map, and we headed off. The first thing we wanted to do was go for a swim, so just as we hit the nature area, we jumped in the water and cooled off (it was already midday at this point). We then continued around the headland that was dedicated as a nature area. The electric bikes made it very easy while it was flat, but as soon as we hit the hills, we struggled. The lady at the hostel downplayed how hard it was, saying that if you're reasonably fit, it should be a "piece of cake." Either she lied, or we were very unfit. In the end, we ditched the bikes and hiked to the top of the hill as we were suffering on the hills even with the electric bikes. The further we got up the hill, the better the views got, and by the end, they were spectacular. The very top had been closed, but Jack and I just found our own track to get to an unreal view. You had the Split on one side and some of the other croatian islands on the other. I wish the photos did it justice, but once again, it's hard to capture all the beauty in a single shot. By the end of this, we were buckled and couldn't wait to have some food and relax. After a quick stop at another beach, we went back to the hostel for a shower and to relax briefly. We then headed out for dinner for our final night in Split. Because it was the last night, I was keen to see Diocletians palace at night and wander quickly. It was quite cool to see it at night, but we were too tired to wander any longer and headed home for bed.Read more

      Marjan Park

      May 17, 2016 in Croatia ⋅ ⛅ 19 °C

In the afternoon, after our trip to the fish market, we went to Marjan park, right next to the city centre. It reminded us of Kings Park in Perth with its size and proximity to the city. No cars are allowed on the park roads which is why throngs of runners and cyclists flock here. We rented bicycles to see if we could make it to the top of the hill. It wasn’t a little hill, but you should know by now that we leave no hill untackled. Slight exaggeration.

Unlike Kings Park which is more suited for running and cycling, this park also offers rock climbing. Hooks have been drilled into the cliff faces and anyone can scale the walls at their own risk. It was amazing to watch guys hanging on to narrow cracks by the fingertips, before swinging to the next rock lip. There was also a house or cathedral of sorts that was built into a natural hollow or nook in the rocks. It was a pity that the door was locked shut.

After a long hard slog to the top, we were rewarded with absolutely breath-taking views of Split and the coastline, and a very big cross. They seem to mark the top of every hill in Europe with a big cross. We took it all in before cruising downhill. Near the entrance to the park, we found an outdoor fitness area which we felt obliged to test out. These outdoor exercise areas (not kids’ playground) are very popular in Europe, and we’d love to see more of them in Perth.

Another unique feature of the park is the pristine little bays dotting its outline – the forest meets the ocean. It would be absolute heaven in summer.

Split von oben - Park Šuma Marjan

      May 20, 2018 in Croatia ⋅ ☀️ 26 °C

      October 8, 2021 in Croatia ⋅ ⛅ 21 °C

      Hmmm was mache ich heute?
Unzählige Schilder an fast jedem Haus...

      August 18, 2015 in Croatia ⋅ ⛅ 26 °C

Read more

Day 2 - Mad dogs and Englishmen

      July 27, 2016 in Croatia ⋅ ⛅ 30 °C

Having danced the night away in an outside disco, whilst showing the youngsters a few new moves, we got to bed around 2 am.

Having got up late we decided to climb up to the view point at Marjan in the 33 degree heat, which was hard work but gave great views over the city of Split and it's port.Read more
