      Arezzo

      A leisurely day exploring this delightful mix of ancient and modern town. Replete from the now habitual croissant crema + coffee, we started with the market. It was massive - filling a tree lined avenue which stretched at least 1km. The food section of any market always interests and this one was quite amazing for cheeses, hams, sausages (wild boar) and fish. Big sides of roast pork were sliced on demand to create take away buns complete with a slice of roasted pig liver.
      It was time to check the rail station as we had heard yesterday that a strike was imminent. We have to be at Rome airport by Sunday night for our 0630 flight to Zagreb.
      It was all looking dodgy. We took the decision to leave today at 6pm (strike starting at 9pm).
      We took a quick walk up the town to check the view from the park and snap a few more of the beautiful Umbrella pines which are everywhere. The bark is amazing.
      Our host was kind enough to refund one day.
      We found a hotel just 500m from Rome Termini station for the night and enjoyed a slice of pizza with gin + tonic in our room at 10pm. Living the high life!      Read more

      Aangekomen in Zagreb

      We zijn aangekomen on Zagreb nadat de politie onze trein tegenhield om paspoorten te controleren. Op de trein hebben we ook nog een Duitse vriendin gemaakt!

      Toen we aankwamen was er een parade van dure auto’s ma de leukste was de kleine in de video.

      We hebben (weeral) durum gegeten, da was spotgoedkoop maar echt smerig. Hopelijk geen platte kak op de trein morgen :)

      We zijn langs de brandweer gegaan EN IK HEB EEN T-SHIRT GEKREGEN!<3

      Normaal gingen we pubcrawlen maar daar was geen energie meer voor, dus tis een theetje en een fanta in een cafeetje geworden :)

      Rustige maar mooie dag

      Treinen, drukke treinen en mooie treinen, helemaal tot in Zagreb en zelfs ZONDER vertraging! Applaus voor de treinen

      Verder eigenlijk ni veel gedaan. We wilden gaan pub crawlen, hadden de volle 40 euro betaald, maar toen beseften we da we te moe waren dus zijn we het geld gaan terug vragen en daarmee een theetje gaan drinken.
      Onderweg naar het thee-café kwamen we ook een brandweer tegen en dus is Arne een brandweer t-shirt gaan vragen, aangezien Arne huge fan is. Leuk he

      Sebiet gaan we slapen want morgen alweer treinen. Om 6.15u opstaan potverdekke

      Zagreb

      I walk up and down the train carriage recounting the seats to make sure I hadn’t made a mistake. The seat reservation in my hand is for seat 11. I’m definitely in the right carriage but the seats seem to start at one, and then jump from four to 38. I ask a passing employee who looks for it too and then shrugs and tells me to pick any seat. I do and am shortly turfed out by someone with the reservation for that seat. At the front of the carriage there’s space been made for a wheelchair (presumably seat 11 was part of the sacrifice) but in the absence of wheelchair users, the space is now full of inter-railers camped on the floor with meaningless seat reservations.

      Six hours and one eventual seat later, we roll into Zagreb. My guide the next day, Robert, tells us to explore Croatia you need a car because ‘our railways are sssssshhhhit’ as he rolls his eyes. He’s sardonic and funny, telling us stories and folklore about Croatia and Zagreb before following up with ‘nice story buuut… there’s no evidence so who knows’.

      Zagreb isn’t a city I immediately fall head over heels for. It takes a bit of exploring to find the heart of it however the old town is incredibly endearing and littered with statues of famous Croatians sat at tables with an empty seat beside them in an attempt to encourage tourists and locals alike to ‘sit and meet’ these historical figures. We meet Croatia’s first feminist and female journalist, Marija Jurić Zagorka, Faust Vrančič who invented the parachute, and perhaps the most famous Croatian, Nikola Tesla (who renounced all citizenship before he died but the Croatians are still quite happy to claim him, and to get him on the Euro before Serbia, who also claims Tesla, ever get the chance).       J9 J10 J11 - Zagreb

      10/03 :

      Je me réveille après une bonne nuit et cette fois il est temps de ranger les affaires, je pars de Bled direction Zagreb. Pour ce trajet j'emprunte d'abord un bus pour Ljubljana dans lequel je retrouve Robin et Blandine. Puis train pour Zagreb.

      A Zagreb j'ai la chance d'être accueille par Margaux (une copine de Valentine que je connais bien) et Elina qui y font leur étude de véto. Le soir un ciné est prévu avec leurs amies de la bas. Nous allons voir "Une vie", en anglais sous titré croate, j'ai bien compris j'étais contente !

      11/03 :

      Après une bonne nuit de sommeil, les filles sont en cours et je décide de visiter la ville. Il pleut beaucoup donc je fais un rapide tour du centre et des principales choses à voir. Je trouve qu'il y a beaucoup de travaux. Margaux m'expliquera après qu'elle a toujours connu ça et que c'est également du à un gros tremblement de terre qui a eu lieu en 2020. Une fois trempée je décide de m'arrêter pour faire le musée des relations rompues (plus de détails dans les photos). C'était intéressant et cela m'a permis de me réchauffer. Je déguste ensuite un thé dans le café du musée et rentre à l'appart. Les filles sont rentrées de cours, nous discutons. Je profite également du temps que j'ai pour prévoir la suite de mon voyage en Croatie. Je réserve le bus et l'entrée au parc de Plivice pour mercredi, normalement la météo sera mieux ! Le soir nous mangeons pâtes bolo et allons boire un verre avec des amis à elles.

      12/03 :

      Aujourd'hui il ne pleut plus. Je décide de refaire un tour dans la ville. Je fais ensuite quelques courses pour préparer une salade de riz pour le midi et pour mon excursion de demain. Je continue ensuite mes recherches sur la Croatie. Cela me fait aussi du bien de ne pas faire grand chose de mes journées. Une fois Margaux et Elina rentrées nous nous posons, puis retournons faire un tour en ville. Elles me montrent des choses intéressantes que je n'étaient pas allées voir. Nous prenons ensuite un goûter. Le soir nous mangeons tartiflette avec des amis à elles, ça rappelle la France !      Read more

      Willkommen in Zagreb

      Ich reise aus dem kroatischen Wald in die Hauptstadt. Zagreb ist wunderschön - wieder haben die Gebäude einen Wiener Einschlag. Ich besuche die Free Spirit Tour und kann sie wärmstens empfehlen. Nun habe ich einen guten geschichtlichen und örtlichen Überblick. Aber eines begeistert mich hier am meisten: das Essen. Es gibt hier sehr viele verschiedene Spezialitäten, alles meistens frisch aus Kroatien. Am Nachmittag besichtige ich das "Museum of Broken Relationships". Mal ein ganz anderer Ansatz eines Museums. Es werden Gegenstände ausgestellt, die aus einem bestimmten Grund bedeutend für die ehemalige Beziehung waren. Dazu wird die entsprechende Geschichte erzählt. Jeder Raum hat eine anderes Thema: normale Trennung, Tod, Krieg, Flucht.Read more

      Tag 2 in Zagreb

      Auch der 2. Tag in Zagreb war ein voller Erfolg. Mein Programm bestand aus Parks, dem botanischen Garten und einer Stadtführung mit dem Thema Homeland War. Letztere beschäftige sich mit dem Kriegshintergrund, Ex-Jugoslawien und führte in Ecken, in die man sonst nicht so gut kommt.

      Day 6

      Ljubljana -> Zagreb !! pov justine

      Réveil de fou ce matin apres une nuit bien réparatrice (non) (j’ai frappé le matelas tellement il ronflait fort)
      Du coup aujourd’hui petite étape à Ljubljana qui n’était pas prévue mais on a pas eu le choix vraiment
      Y’avait plein de dragons y’a un truc avec Jason qu’a tué le dragon du coup c’est un prétexte pour vendre des peluches dragon à 30€ dans les boutiques souvenirs bref
      On a mangé un super plat traditionnel enfin ! C’est genre du boeuf roulé avec du pain c’était pas mal
      Ensuite on a pris le funiculaire pour monter tout en haut y’avait une jolie vue c’est sympa les montagnes et tout
      Apres on s’est posées dans un bar puis on a repris le train direction Zagreb ! Tout de passait à merveille on était dans une cabine de 6 comme les wagons dans Harry Potter, les paysages étaient franchement magnifiques et PAF la police qui passe dans tous les wagons (en fait c’était juste pour la frontiere Slovène-Croate fallait montrer les cartes d’identités et on a cru qu’il fallait les passeports obligé on a sué du cul mais au final tout va bien)
      Nous sommes donc arrivées à l’auberge qui est plutôt cool, on est 10, on a une cuisine et salle de bain privée avec un ptit jardin ca régale là on est allées en ville on a mangé un ptit truc en écoutant 2 espagnols enflammer le centre ville de Zagreb à la guitare🔥🔥
      Maintenant c’est bed time il se fait tard et on a une certaine nuit à rattraper

      Bon donc là on est Zagreb c’est sympa sans plus on est allées dans les hauts ce matin y’avait une ptite vue, un grand tunnel datant de la seconde guerre et un canon qui tirait pour donner l’heure, y’avait aussi des culottes étendues j’ai mas trop compris pourquoi

      Day 39

      Dead centre of town

      January 2 in Croatia ⋅ ⛅ 8 °C

      The trusty guidebook sent Craig, Kate and me to Mirogoj Cemetery about 3.7km from our apartment today. We set off in 1°C and fog so it added a nice ambience to our meandering through Zagreb's largest cemetery in addition to very cold fingers and chin. Of note was the 500m of arched palisade however it was blocked off from access for some reason. The cemetery went on forever and we could not see the end through the fog. It is estimated about 300,000 people are buried here and large family sites were the norm.

      To get some respite from the cold we decided to stop for a coffee. The first coffee shop had mournful singing coming from it, and given we had seen people leaving a funeral we decided to leave them be. The next caffe bar was full of smokers so we had a lot of smoke with a side of coffee... The things you do to get warm and do a pee!

      We meandered back into town to give Kate her curry fix over a lazy lunch before walking through Tunnel Grgic which is part of a network underground tunnels built during WWII as an air raid shelter and then used again during the Homeland War 1991-1995. There was an art installation called Polar Dream in the centre section.

      We then decided on some lunch dessert at a cafe before heading home. Dinner at the advent markets for our last night in Croatia, with sausage, pizza, kebabs, donuts and kahuna gin.      Read more
