      Changing of Gaurds

      Following the wall, we walked up to the castle and happened to be there right in time to watch the changing of the guards!! Very cool to watch and I had no idea this was a tradition that was still very much a part of everyday life!Read more

      Last day in Prague

      Today was our last day in Prague and we had a nice relaxing time. We headed up to Petrin Hill on a funicular and went to the Mirror maze - it was cute. Wish it would have been harder, but still fun. Then we stopped at the Petrin Tower, Prague’s attempt to duplicate the Eiffel Tower. Built slightly differently and MUCH smaller, but neat to see. We also toured the beautiful rose gardens and then took the funicular back down.

      After that we headed back to the Head of Franz Kafka to see if it was working today, and found it was - kind of. There are 42 moving plates, and sadly 2 of them didn’t rotate. Still saw the gist of it, but the broken pieces didn’t allow it to do all it was supposed to do. If you google it you can see it working correctly.

      Then we headed thru the city for one last look. Everywhere we go we see Starbucks - it’s amazing how they are different in each old city and morph right in with the surroundings.

      Prague is definitely a beautiful place - and their public transportation system is the best we’ve seen yet. The US has a long way to go to catch up with the rest of the world it seems.      Read more

      Day 18

      Prague - Day 2 & 3

      Not too many photos from our last couple of days in Prague as we went to some museums and galleries where you weren’t allowed to take photos - understandably. Day 2 took us to the Museum of Communism which was really interesting and I’m really pleased we decided to go. I’m not a big history buff but the exhibition was so informative and well set out with lots of memorabilia from the last 100 years of Prague’s history. Highly recommend! We wandered through the Jewish Quarter of Prague which was fascinating too.

      For our final day in Prague, I wanted to spend some time exploring some interesting art galleries so we started at the Musuem of Miniatures which features the tiny works from Anatolij Konenko. It was mind blowing. He has created artwork like nothing I’ve ever seen before working on small surfaces such as poppy seeds, a strand of hair or a grain of rice. Ed managed to get a couple of photos on his phone looking into the microscopes (go Galaxy S8 for skill!).

      We went for a walk around the area of the Strahov Monastery and as it was getting pretty cold by this point, we ended up heading into the Monastery Beer and Wine Cellars which have been used for over 800 years. The restaurant down the bottom was fantastic and I got to try their freshly brewed Cherry Beer which was amazing. Of course I made Ed sample the food so he had some amazing looking (and tasting I’m sure!) black sausage stew. No complaints from him haha!

      We had a couple of hours to kill before heading to the airport so decided to head to the National Gallery which is in the Fair Trade Palace. A lot of local Czech artists featured in there and a few Picasso and Matisse as part of the collection. Was a good little stop over! 

Then off to the airport for our flight to Copenhagen. Chat in a few days :D

      Strahov Monastery

      Next up we went to the Monastery up on the hill. This was actually really cool and we learned quite a lot about the place that started in the 1100s 😱 it was a really interesting community that was destroyed and then re built. Currently (according to online source) there are 70 monks still living there. Beautiful walk up and we enjoyed a beer at the top supposedly made by the monks as well!!!Read more

      Day 52

      Tour Day 3 - Prague

      Today we woke up and grabbed some breakfast before jumping on the bus and heading to the castle district of Prague. One of the more quiet guys on the tour asked a couple of us if we wanted to try 'holy water'. We were all very confused but watched as he pulled out a ziplock bag with a coles plastic water bottle full of a clear liquid. We offerred for people to smell it before offering us a sip out of the lid. Turns out 'holy water' is 52% alcohol made out of fermented grapes. So that really woke us up.
      We walked from the castle district down to the astronomical tower to watch the performance on the hour. Highlight is a skeleton ringing a bell. Then found a place for coffee on the water which had stunning views. We then joined our free castle walking tour. We caught the tram up to the castle and then explored the surrounding areas before arriving at a non-traditional yellow palace looking building. Our guide got us a great view of the changing of the guard, which was incredible. The precision around it was amazing. We then went into the cathedral which took 500 years to build and includes a stained glass window sponsored by an insurance company. We had another 90 mins walking around the grounds, we saw a statue that we called Pissing Man 2 (see yesterdays post) and back to the Charles bridge. It was a great tour.
      Next we headed to a pub for a light lunch and a beer, then to an hour river cruise with coffee and cake. The cheesecake was delicious and made me tolerate the cruise more.
      Then we went to the Pilsner Urquell immersive experience, which was a tour of how they make this czech pilsner. It was a tour with headphones and the headphones are triggered in each room by sensors. We ended by trying the beer. I tried the Mlíko which is 7/8 foam, 1/8 beer meant to give the beer a sweet taste. It was interesting to say the least.
      We headed back to the hotel and got ready for a traditional dinner with folk dancing. The dinner was great but the best part was the all you can drink beer. Paul, who has become our drinking dad kept telling the servers to give us more beer and everyone was enjoying the Aussie girls drinking a tonne of beer only 2L. The dancing and music was so entertaining. Such talented people! We got suckered by the photographer and bought the souvenir photo.

      192ème étape ~ Prague (jour 3)

      Pour ce 3ème jour à Prague, nous visitons le château de Prague et tout le mini village qui l’entoure. La cathédrale a des somptueux vitraux, avec le soleil il doit y avoir une luminosité incroyable. Au milieu de notre balade, nous rencontrons un monsieur qui proposait de tester le tir à l’arbalète. C’était pas si facile de viser comme il faut.
      Comme c’était le week-end de carnaval, il y avait un petit marché folklorique et tout le monde était déguisé.
      Nous sommes allés voir le mur inspiré de John Lennon. Il est plein de graffitis.
      Le soir nous avons testé un nouveau concept de restaurant. Nous sommes allés manger dans une taverne médiévale. Comme à l’ancienne, nous n’avions pas de service. Nous avons eu droit à des spectacles durant tout le repas. Danseurs, magicien, cracheur de feu, jeux, musiciens, c’est riche et amusant.      Read more

      Prague to Bratislava (Slovakia)

      Today started with an early morning walk that encouraged me to add more layers of clothing. And it was SNOWING. Yay.

      After breakfast, headed to see Prague castle and cathedral. As they say if it is not baroque don’t fix it. Absolutely stunning constructed in the baroque style with vaulted ceiling. Stained glass beautiful.

      Walking with the guide across King Charles Bridge to the Old Town Square to see Astronomical Clock strike twelve.

      Follow with a Goulash and mulled wine to defrost and headed off to Bratislava.      Read more

      Eiffel tower, made eggnog, spencers bday

      Ever since I landed in prague I've been super keen to get a gingerbread man and try some eggnog and I'm pleased to report I have now done both of those things! I got the gingerbread man from the nicest smelling gingerbread shop while I was out looking for Christmas ornaments on a busy alley near the prague castle. The alley was a real quintessential euro road with winding cobblestones and cool buildings of all different heights. I spent all day perusing through the shops in the alley until I got to the end of the road where there was a great view of the city. The next day we walked up a huge hill near our house to get another good view of the city and then went out to an event coz it was spencers birthday the next day. Spencer slept for his entire birthday but that was cool coz Christie and I spent the day making eggnog which was so so so delicious. Once spencer got up we went out for curry.Read more

      L'ancien palais royal

      Le château royal est de l'autre côté de la Vltava (le fleuve qui serpente dans Prague). Il est situé sur une colline ce qui le rend impressionnant! Il est composé de plusieurs monuments et bâtiments dont l'ancien palais royal 

      Bien qu'il n'y est plus de roi en Tchéquie depuis 1848, il y a toujours des gardes à l'entrée du Château. Ils ont même conservé le rituel de la relève de la garde toutes les heures. 

      Aujourd'hui c'est la résidence du président Tchèque (l'Elysée local en gros 😅). C'est hyper classe 👍🏻      Read more
