      Kutná Hora

      September 21, 2024 in Czech Republic ⋅ ☀️ 23 °C

Off to Kutnâ Hora today which is best known for the Sedlec Ossuary or ‘Bone Church’. In medieval times when the cemetery area reached 3.5 hectares, there was no space left to expand. The old graves were exhumed and the remains placed around the Lower Chapel wall perimeter, both inside and out. It is estimated to contain the skeletons of between 40,000 and 70,000. They were deteriorating so a decision was made to clean (sonic) and store them. An artist was appointed to arrange the bones - thus these decorations and furnishings we now see. Some remain stacked and the operation is not yet complete.
It’s a cute little town and is also known for St Barbara’s Cathedral. This was a well off silver mining town where the locals wanted their own place of worship rather than the one at distance and so began this incredible build - a Gothic Unesco World Heritage Listed masterpiece.
We had a traditional lunch and I went for a degustation of beers. I was quite pleasantly surprised but not keen at all on their random cherry liqueur one.
This is my last day in Prague so on our return I made a mad dash for the Grand Prague Museum.
Those of you who have seen the movie ‘One Life’ with Anthony Hopkins - you will understand the train door tribute to the Brit Nicholas Winton, kept at Prague Main Station. Very touching. He saved close to 700 odd Jewish children from the gas chambers.

Return to Prague Day 2 - Kutna Hora & Op

      September 29, 2023 in Czech Republic ⋅ ☁️ 18 °C

We went on a guided day trip to Kutna Hora with Sandeman's Tour. Description taken from Sandeman's website.

ABOUT THE DAY TRIP TO KUTNÁ HORA
Only an hour away from the crowded pubs of Prague lies Kutná Hora. Seemingly frozen in time, the town of 20,000 is almost like an open-air museum, showcasing some of Central Europe’s most stunning architectural treasures in perfectly-preserved condition. With a compact, UNESCO-listed historical center, this tour offers a smooth and secure transfer by train from the capital, before taking to the cobbled streets by foot.
The day trip begins with a train journey to Kutná Hora accompanied by your expert local guide. You’ll then set out to explore the nooks and crannies of this charming Bohemian city on foot - wandering through the UNESCO-listed center at a completely flexible pace.

You'll visit the Sedlec Ossuary (also known as the 'Bone Chapel') which draws visitors from all over the world who come to see the tens of thousands of human skeletons that decorate it. However, there is much more to see in Kutná Hora than just the Bone Chapel, as this tour takes you to one of the Czech Republic's oldest monasteries, to the gothic masterpiece Saint Barbara's Church.

The historical town center of Kutná Hora is so impressive that it is a UNESCO World Heritage site. During your walking tour in Kutná Hora, you'll see the splendour of the Italian Court (the Royal Mint), some of the most impressive gothic buildings in the Czech Republic and you'll understand why several Bohemian kings made the town their home.

In our group of 10, we had a couple from Geraldton, WA and a young couple from Manning, Perth. That's a suburb just 20 minutes away from us in Perth. Another member was young Chinese guy from California who was doing his first solo travel holiday for a fortnight in Europe. It was a lovely group, and much chatting was done.

The day ended with Dvorak's Rusalka Opera at the State Opera House. A beautifully ornate Opera House with frescoes and baroque architecture. The staging and set were state of the art and the orchestra and cast were outstanding.

      Distance walked 21.9km

      Kutna Hora

      July 27, 2017 in Czech Republic ⋅ ☁️ 17 °C

Day bus trip to Kutna Hora, a town 70 km outside Prague. First stop was Sedlec Ossuary (Bone Church)- qualifies as the creepiest place I've ever visited ( surpasses even the bone catacombs we visited under Paris). Then on to Kutna Hora- UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site. Originally a silver mine and where the coins where made centuries ago. Also has the beautiful st Barbara Church. She is the saint for silver mining. Back to Prague in the late afternoon for a cruise on the river.Read more

      Kuttenberg (Kutná Hora)

November 1, 2023 in Czech Republic

Read more

      Wir fahren nach Prag

Day 56: Kutná Hora, Czech Republic

      August 15, 2017 in Czech Republic ⋅ ☀️ 25 °C

Today we travelled to Kutná Hora (about an hour from Prague) to visit the Sedlec Ossuary, St. Barbara's Cathedral and the Church of the Assumption of our Lady. They were all pretty neat and very old.

The ossuary is the final resting place to 65,000 people and they arranged the bones artistically to make decorations or furnishings. When you walk around the cemetery outside, you also see people buried from 2015 so it's pretty recent even though the church has been there since the 12th century and the cemetery is rather small.

We also walked around the town a bit which was nice and reminded me of Old Montreal with all the cobblestone. We walked a good amount today too as we couldn't figure out the bus schedule and since it's such a small town, no one we spoke to really understood English.

By the end of the night, we went back to the same restaurant for the third time in a row so I'm sure they will know us by name soon enough.

      More of them bones

      January 21, 2017 in Czech Republic ⋅ 🌙 -9 °C

Up again this morning, went down for breakfast. This morning they had frankfurt soup with sausage, I presume it was leftovers from the day before. We enjoyed a bit of vegemite and toast.
Today we went on a tour to Kutná Hora which was an hour drive from Prague. We were a little disappointed with the previous two tours so we decided to try a new company. We were lucky as there were only 9 of us on the tour. The main reason to go out to Kutná Hora was to see the bone church that we had heard so much about. It is a church and inside it is decorated with bones. It was a very strange feeling being in there knowing that there were 60,000 skeletons used in the church. The ironic thing is people travelled from all over Europe to die and be buried in this cemetery as it was thought to be holy grounds and they have ended up as a tourist attraction. After the church we visited other things around the town. Talking to the guide they don't usually get snow and it is the coldest winter they have had in 5 years. Today it wasn't as cold. She said yesterday was -14 so no wonder we felt it. We had lunch at local pub, the kids had a chicken schnitzel that was as big as the dinner plate. I had beef cheeks and Dave had potato and mushroom soup & creamy beef. Tatiana tells us that they don't eat many vegetables and they eat what we had for lunch for lunch and tea. A bit more of a walk around town before heading back to Prague. It was a lovely day with a lovely group of people, a good way to finish. We saw the sun setting on the way home.
When we got back we walked along the river as it was such a nice evening. We had planned to go out for tea as it was our last night but as we had such a late lunch none of us felt like eating. Tonight we have the daunting task of packing everything into our bags.

      Photos 1, 2, 3 - Sedlec Ossuary (bone church)
Photo 4 - My lunch, it doesn't look that good, but it was yummy.
