    The last post

July 7, 2017 in Czech Republic

Just for a change we went to see a modern art installation today, these revolving mirrors are mesmerising. The bits all line up to form a head, Franz Kafka, apparently, but how would I know.

We head home tomorrow after a wonderful journey.

    Just to recap:

1558 Kilometres: mostly bike path, usually nicely paved but some rough bits. Cobble stones in the towns.

Rivers: Main, Regnitz, Tauber, Neckar, Rhine, Elbe and Vltava.

Major cities: Frankfurt, Wurzburg, Bamberg, Nuremberg, Rothenburg, Stuttgart, Mannheim, Heidelberg, Klobenz, Cologne, Berlin, Wittenberg, Dresden and Prague.

Our bikes were fantastic, no mechanical problems, no flat tyres.

Weather was usually perfect, sometimes a bit hot, only one day of any significant rain for us.

Villages, towns, ferries and castles: too many to count.

Accomodation: excellent, thanks to JW's booking skills.

Favourite food: Swabian and of course ice cream.

    Beer: too many to count.

Went down to the river this afternoon and took some low light shots. Out again this evening for a night shoot. Taxi from the airport cost cz550. Booked return taxi for wednesday.

    Prague. Part 2

    The Mucha Museum

July 11, 2015 in Czech Republic

This morning we visited a museum dedicated to the life and work of Art Nouveau artist Alphonse Mucha. He was born in 1860 and died in Prague in 1939, after arrest and interrogation by the Gestapo.

Mucha did not initially enrol at an art college, but worked as a courtroom usher, where he got into trouble for drawing caricatures of the defendents and plaintiffs there. Later he moved to Paris and had been there for seven years, producing art for magazines and advertisers, when a lucky chance meant he was commissioned to create a poster for Sarah Bernhardt's current play. Apparently he was the only artist available on Boxing Day, when she suddenly decided her play, Gismonda, needed a new poster. The result of this was a six-year contract with her.

The museum told the story of Mucha's life and depicted the development of his art style, including his famous Art Nouveau pieces, which strangely enough were not those he was most proud of. He tried to disassociate himself from his more commercial work, and concentrate more on other artistic projects which he felt were more important.

After looking round the exhibits we spent a while in the well-stocked gift shop. There were many beautiful posters but they were just too big to bring home safely. So we bought a pack of cards instead 😄

    Cafe lourve

January 5, 2016 in Czech Republic

Another cafe recommended by paul, its along the way back to our place from the dancing house. The cafe used to be only for the high society people when it open in 1908, but now has opened up for public to dine in. We had the afternoon tea for 2, which is not fabulous but the atmosphere was good! Very classy settings.

    U fleků

    Praha 1_Clarks

    Potrefená HUSA Národní
