      Luhacovice Concert 2

      July 22, 2018 in Czech Republic ⋅ 🌧 20 °C

The CYO kicked us off for concert two with a superb performance of Verdi's Force of Destiny overture. Then Andy Johnson, sensational musician that he is, amazed everyone again by showing just how soloistic a tuba can be when in the hands of someone so good! The Vaughan Williams Tuba Concerto is fiendishly difficult in places (for soloist and orchestra!) but you wouldn't have thought it to listen, an extremely professional job. And to finish the orchestra gave us the wonderful music from the Cowboys by John Williams.

The concert has sparked the interest of the local media who are here filiming and reporting, and there's another very appreciative audience of over 100 who have come out to support the students; another plus is the venue has air conditioning!

An orchestra on top of its game now, goosebumps a-go-go (especially in the encore - Nimrod!) from a very proud sectional coach, well done Mr. Roper and the whole orchestra!

      Archbishop's Palace Concert, Kromeriz

      July 21, 2018 in Czech Republic ⋅ 🌧 21 °C

Our first concert of the tour was nothing short of fabulous!

The students played and sang beautifully, and it was a real pleasure to be in the audience and experience music performed with such quality and commitment.

We have used ACFEA as our tour company for many years now, and one of the reasons is that they use local couriers who know the area, know the concert venues and have good contacts with the local community and who can help to generate audiences that make the concerts feel extra special. We estimate that there were around 180 people in the audience this evening, they warmly welcomed the choir and the orchestra and were incredibly enthusiastic throughout. It makes such a difference to a tour if, after travelling around 1000 miles, you perform to good audiences in lovely venues, makes it all seem worthwhile!

The venue itself, as you will have seen from the rehearsal photos, is nothing short of spectacular. The acoustic in the hall is sympathetic and magnifies the sound superbly so the fabulous solos from Jade Segler on violin and Abi Taylor, Libby Marsland and Michael Needle came across beautifully. The overall sound of both the orchestra and choir came across as extremely polished and mature beyond their years. It's unfair to pick out highlights from tonight (as I had goosebumps pretty much throughout) so I won't do that, but in the interests of accuracy and so you know what was performed here is the running order:

      CYO: Romeo and Juliet overture
CYCh: Laudate Dominum (Abi Taylor solo)
      CYCh: Shenandoah (Libby Marsland solo)
      CYCh: Abide With Me
CYCh: Sure On This Shining Night
CYO: Two Pieces from Schindler's List (Jade Segler solo violin)
      CYO: Vltava
      CYCh: Sleep

      Then encores of
CYCh: Underneath The Stars (Michael Needle solo)
      CYO: Nimrod
      CYO: Slavonic Dance

We know that you are rightly already proud of your kids, and so tonight all you need to know is that they represented themselves, Northamptonshire and NMPAT perfectly, and if that is the benchmark for the rest of the trip then we're going to be in for a superb next three concerts!

Photos and clips attached with more to follow, I'm going to need to download a thesaurus I think as having proof read this blog I believe I may have already exhausted my superlative collection?!

It really was a brilliant concert!!!

      Dinner Blog Addition

      July 21, 2018 in Czech Republic ⋅ 🌧 22 °C

Ok it turned out that I had missed Rachel and Amy, as they had managed to secure themselves one of the nice tables just for two! Last dinner table photo I promise; but also thought you'd love to see the food we were served which was delicious!Read more

      Dinner Blog 1

      July 21, 2018 in Czech Republic ⋅ 🌧 23 °C

Ok apologies in advance for these next two blogs but we had dinner in a restaurant which is often the best chance to take photos of everyone (as they are essentially a captive audience!) so it is just people at dining tables, hardly likely to win any photography awards!

The photos are of all the tables (I don't think I missed any but 119 students, 13 staff, 2 couriers and 4 drivers need a lot!) and I also hope that I waited for anyone who had popped to the loo to get back...?!

      Letzte Tag in Tschechischen

      * Tschechien ist reich an Flüssen, Bächen, Seen, Badeseen
      * wir haben viele super gerichtete Sportplätze gesehen, viele Trainingsstangen, Skaterparks. Inline fahren ist hier grad voll im Trend.
      * Tschechien das Bierland
      * vorsichtige Autofahrer, noch vorsichtiger als die Deutschen und alles wird abgeschlossen.
      * Felder und Wald
      * preislich wie in Deutschland
      * es gibt Kaufland, Penny, Deichmann, DM, Lidl - alles ist bekannt

      Anstrengung: 5

      Tag 4

      Arnold Quintet Chamber Performance

      July 21, 2018 in Czech Republic ⋅ ⛅ 29 °C

We had asked the tour organisers before the tour whether there were suitable venues for some of our chamber ensembles to perform prior to our concerts, both as a nice performing opportunity but also to plug our concerts.

This afternoon the Arnold Quintet and the Segler String Quartet both played in the gardens of the Chateau in Kromeriz. It was a really lovely space to play in and there were plenty of people out and about in the gardens who stopped to listen and show an interest.

Photos and a little snippet of the Arnold Quintet playing a polka by Denes Agay are attached...

      Elusive Students

      July 21, 2018 in Czech Republic ⋅ ⛅ 29 °C

So whilst not guaranteeing that we can include photos of every student on tour we are trying our best, although some students are trying very hard to evade being captured on film! As can be seen by the six attachments attempting (and failing in five of them) to get Kymberley included in the group photos this afternoon; at one stage she even hid behind a pillar!! Got there in the end...Read more
