3 day trip to Atauro - Timor Leste

    August 22, 2019 in East Timor ⋅ ⛅ 25 °C

We walked from Kathy's house to the local docks to catch a ferry to Atauro island. It was total chaos loading, unloading, boarding the boat. Eventually everything and everyone was on board and we sailed away. We arrived at a small concrete jetty and everyone piled off. We walked a short distance through the local market stalls to Barry's Place, where we were quickly introduced to our room and provided with lunch. We stayed in a large cabin built mainly from bamboo that had 3 sleeping rooms and a nice balcony metres from the beach. After lunch Kathy and I joined a group going snorkeling on a reef a short distance directly offshore. The corals and abundant fish life was astounding. We enjoyed a few gin and tonics before a nice buffet meal in the big communal eating area. It was nice sleeping on the second level with the shutters open letting in the wind and sound of the sea.Read more

    Kathys house

    August 18, 2019 in East Timor ⋅ ⛅ 27 °C

Turned out the Kathy was living in the same house that our friends Tim and Meredith Budge lived in. When the trouble started in 2006 we moved in with them. The place had hardly changed in 12 years. Kathy shared with 3 other people, Jack and Abbey, and a PhD student Emily.Read more

    Aileu - Project Montanha

    August 21, 2019 in East Timor ⋅ ⛅ 16 °C

We set off from Dili just after 8am for a 48km uphill ride (total over 2000m climb) from Dili to Aileu, via Dare. The road to Dare was sealed and in pretty good condition. The road deteriorated a bit beyond Dare, but was a bit more rolling rather just uphill. The last section into Aileu joined the new road from Dili and was a nice flowing downhill. It started to rain just as we hit Aileu, so we sheltered in the little market and then found our way to Project Montanha where we enjoyed a really nice lunch. We stayed the night at Project Montanha in a very nice room, and enjoyed the really great food and atmosphere. The breakfast was particularly good: fresh strawberry juice and banana bread, amongst other delights.Read more

Our old house in Bairro Pite

    August 19, 2019 in East Timor ⋅ ⛅ 29 °C

Visited our old house in Biarro Pite. Still looked much the same. Biarro Pite has become the China town of Dili, with lots of development by the Chinese community. There were many more factories, warehouses, and businesses particularly on Banana road.Read more

Walk to Abara - Atauro - Timor Leste

    August 23, 2019 in East Timor ⋅ ☁️ 26 °C

Woke to a nice sunrise over Timor Island. After a great breakfast at Barrys, we collected our packed lunch and headed across Atauro towards Mario's at Abara. A rough dusty road led up the mountain across rugged limestone ridges. Over the top we followed little local tracks through shady gorges, past villages and pig pens eventually teaching the cost on the other side of the island. We followed the beach to Mario's, where we took to the water for a snorkel over the reef just of shore. There were thousands of colourful fish over the shallow parts of the reef, and a steep deep bank leading into the depths with loads of larger reef fish dashing around. We warmed up on the bamboo pontoon and made our way bank to the little resort to eat our lunch. It was a hot but enjoyable walk back, tempered by some cold Cooper's ale.Read more

Some of Kathy friends picked us up to go for dinner and a movie at Christo Rei beach. The movie screen is set up in the water and dinner is served on tables set out in the sand. "Zach's Ceremony" is a documentary made by an Alice Springs born filmmaker and is set in QLD and the NT - a very good film.Read more

    August 25, 2019 in East Timor ⋅ ☀️ 22 °C

We joined a group in the centre of Dili for a ride around the Hera loop (30km), a ride we did many times when we lived in Dili. Everything along the way was very familiar, nothing much had changed on the way. Kathy walked to Christo Rei beach where we all enjoyed breakfast with some of the other riders.Read more
