      El Cajas National Park

      May 13, 2023 in Ecuador ⋅ ☁️ 13 °C

Today we boarded the bus and headed to El Cajas National Park for a 3.5 hour hike. The hike was absolutely stunning. It is so hard to describe and hard to tell from the pictures, but this park felt like another planet. The plants and trees all seemed like something out of a fantasy movie (the forest specifically reminded me of the forbidden forest in Harry Potter). We hike up and around gorgeous mountains and lakes at an altitude of 3800m. While still tiring, this altitude felt much more manageable than Cotopaxi (4800m), which had me gasping for air every 5 steps! It was so cool to be able to hike in this national park without a guide or anything. Apart from a few other hikers we passed, it felt like we had the whole area to ourselves. What a cool experience and another epic day.

This has been our last day in Ecuador. We have tickets for an overnight bus tonight that will bring us into Peru... It will be a very long travel day but we have gone to the local candy store to buy some snacks to help us through it 😂. I am excited to continue our adventures in Peru; however, I am very sad to be leaving Ecuador. This country has surprised me in so many ways and surpassed all my expectations. We have met the loveliest and most helpful people here and have been treated to incredible food and culture. The national parks and hikes have taken my breath away! The vastness of this landscape and the preserved beauty is something to behold. So many amazing memories and bucket list items checked off in Ecuador and I know there will be many more exciting things around the corner. For now, so long Ecuador and thank you for being amazing (we will be back 😁).

      Cuenca

      March 26, 2023 in Ecuador ⋅ 🌧 12 °C

We enjoyed a day exploring Cuenca which is Ecuador's 3rd largest city. Daniel woke up and had a buffet breakfast at the hotel but Gab stayed in the room and did some yoga (after feeling a bit sore after over 14 hrs on the bus yesterday!)

We then walked with the group to the main square where we saw some school children marching. Our guide, Guido, explained that because of the strong military culture in Ecuador, parades of this type very common thing and usually occur every Sunday.

We then visited the local markets and tried some different local fruits (some which are quite different to fruits we have at home!) . We then went and saw the meat stalls at the markets - they sell and eat all parts of the animal. We had some pulled pork for a snack at the markets then went back to the hotel to check out our bags.

We then went back to the main square and went to the top of the main cathedral which is considered the largest in Latin America. We walked around town for a bit. There were a lot of markets around and all of the churches were very busy with Sunday masses and parades.

Some of our group, organised a bus to the National Park. The national park was incredible, the landscape was so picturesque and one of the lookout points was over 4100m! The last stop at the National Park included a chocolate shop/Cafe where Gab enjoyed a hot chocolate with baileys and churros.

We then walked around the shops before heading for a quick dinner at a sports bar before boarding the night bus to Mancora, Peru at 8pm. Goodbye Ecuador - it has been amazing!!

      Cajas National Park

      August 16, 2023 in Ecuador ⋅ ⛅ 10 °C

Even though we got some impressions from the internet, Cajas National Park really surprised us by its beauty (similar to Cuenca 🙃). We took a 13 km hike at an altitude from 3800 - 4200 m, and the route led us through beautiful alpine (andine?) landscapes, around many crystal clear mountain lakes and through fairytale-like enchanted forests. All the time (or up until the last 3km) we were blessed by almost uninterrupted sunshine and, consequentially, with quite high temperatures despite the altitude (memo to ourselves: SPF 50 does not work the same at this altitude!). We loved every second of the trek and highly recommend everyone in or around Cuenca to visit the Cajas National Park, and to do the ‚long‘ trek! It really made us look even more forward to all the other treks we are planning to do in Ecuador.
      Ecuador, eres hermosa!! ❤️

      Schluchten, Seen, Wasserfälle

      May 26, 2023 in Ecuador ⋅ ⛅ 7 °C

      May 14, 2023 in Ecuador ⋅ ☁️ 12 °C

Read more

      Páramo

      December 30, 2022 in Ecuador ⋅ 🌧 7 °C

      Parque Nacional Cajas

      April 15, 2023 in Ecuador ⋅ 🌧 9 °C

Nsch zwei Täg 😂 Zum Znacht hani mi bim Paul im Studenteheim iiglade - clever, denn muesi mer ned überlegge wo dasi sus wett go esse wil d'Chuchi im Hostel lached mi ned soo a... Mir hends wider lustig, losed us irgendwelchne Gründ plötzli Schlager und vergessed scho fast, dasmer beidi voll uf de Schnore sind ^^
Schliessli bringt mi s'Taxi is Hostel, woni mini letst Nacht für es Ziitli uf dere Höchi in Agriff nime. Das mitem viel trinke i dere Meereshöchi muesi z'Bolivie denn besser im Griff ha. Ha recht Chopfweh 🙈

      Nationalpark Cajas

      April 7, 2023 in Ecuador ⋅ 🌧 10 °C

Today I went to the Nationalpark Cajas with 6 other people from the hostel. (German, mexican, British). We drove 1h from the bus terminal after 20 min walk to to the bus terminal the entrance of the Parque Nacional Cajas at the Laguna Toreadora. Then we hiked around 4 hours and we were 3900 m high!
I really enjoyed the walk/hike, but it started raining after 1h and we got wet😂
Super beautiful to see all the small Lagunas and the mountains!

After a little bith of waiting we drove again 1h home. I really enjoyed the day!
In the evening we went to a eastern procession, which was really strange. Ecuador is very religious, so the procession was unusual to see, because I am also not that religious. (Also 3 people carried crosses and there were slammed with a roap🤷🏽‍♂️) So we went away from there fast, and after dinner I chilled in the hostel and drunk some beer with the Canadian Digital Normand Marcus

      Auf 4295m im Cajas Nationalpark

      November 4, 2019 in Ecuador ⋅ ⛅ 15 °C
