      Cotopaxi

      July 8, 2023 in Ecuador ⋅ ❄️ 1 °C

The Cotopaxi 🌋 was a altitude test and height record for Nadja and Vanbora and luckily they both succeeded.
You could drive up on 4500m with your car. Vanbora made it up to 4450m, on the last turn there was too much snow so we had to park there. Leki was not happy to stay back in the van, seeing all this snow around. But it was forbidden to bring dogs inside this park so we already felt bad bringing him along in the car. For crossing the park entry we had to attach him in the back of the van on the bed🙈
To reach the Jose Rivas refuge you had to walk around 1km with 350m height difference. With a slow and steady pace we had no problems to hike up there, and reached the refuge about 45min later. We were the first ones to arrive and even arrived before the staff. Unfortunately we forgot our money and couldn't taste a hot chocolate or a 'te de coca.' We really liked this hut, it was cozy and full of memories of other tourists. Our highlight was of course the climbing wall 🤗
As the weather was quite stormy we didn't have the best view of Cotopaxi but we nevertheless enjoyed this small adventure very much!

      Cotopaxi

      October 7, 2022 in Ecuador ⋅ ☁️ 41 °F

From Quito, we headed to an amazing hacienda at the base of Cotopaxi. The hacienda is a working farm on the site of Inca ruins, and the setting was gorgeous (https://www.incahacienda.com/). We could see Cotopaxi clearly from the beautiful gardens.

Our first day was drizzly, so we stayed around the hacienda, toured the grounds and got to know the animals. Talia really wanted to milk the cows, so we headed to the barn where we received a cow-milking lesson. Talia suddenly got cow-shy and somehow I ended up being the only cow-milker in our family (though Talia did feed the baby cows from a bottle). After the cows, we hung out by the communal fireplace, had an excellent farm-to-enormous-table dinner and then fell asleep quickly with Ecuadorian-poncho-wrapped hot water bottles in our bed.

On day 2, we hired a driver to take us to Cotopaxi…which was completely covered in clouds. We did take a walk around a beautiful lake, and we spotted some new birds as well as an Andean wolf. Despite the weather, it was a nice outing. Back at the hacienda, Talia fed lamas and hung out with Lady Gaga, the farm dog.

On our third day, we woke up to SUN and took an early horseback tour around the hacienda property and neighboring farms before breakfast. Talia loved galloping and I loved the scenery (and the fact that, for the first time since we arrived in Ecuador, we were offered helmets). After the horseback riding, we had a delicious breakfast that did not include enough praise for the yogurt, which I’m sure was made more delicious by my expert cow-milking. Then Talia bid farewell to all of the farm animals, including a baby bunny, and we headed off to Quilotoa. Photos of horseback riding and Quilotoa in the next post.

      Cotopaxi Fuchs

      November 28, 2023 in Ecuador ⋅ ☁️ 5 °C

Read more

      Cotopaxi National Park

      September 10, 2023 in Ecuador ⋅ ☁️ 9 °C

Spent a night on the foothills of the Cotopaxi volcano. Sadly, the clouds didn't let us get a full view, but still had a great time at 3800m altitude. See if you can spot our car in some of the landscape photos!

Also a flying view of Quito from the highway, and special bonus photos - Andrew juggling his hard boiled eggs to keep warm 😂

      Cotopaxi

      May 6, 2023 in Ecuador ⋅ ☁️ 11 °C

Today we set off for an early morning adventure at Cotopaxi National Park. We had the same guide as yesterday as well as a local Indigenous guide, both of whom were very fun! On the way in our Indigenous guide sang a song in honor of Cotopaxi and then discussed with us the uses of many medicinal plants that grow in the park. We stopped on the way to get some Coca tea (made from the same leaves that make cocaine... Don't worry it's safe to drink, tastes great, and is a local remedy for altitude sickness). We stopped many times along the way to admire the amazing view and we even had a dance celebration in tribute to the volcano (I got to wear an epic orange hat... See pictures). The ride was one of the bumpiest journeys ever. Our guide said it was like getting a massage but honestly felt more like a wooden roller coaster at Wonderland.

We were blessed with incredible sunny weather in the morning and thus, got the most beautiful view of the Cotopaxi volcano in its entirety. We also were able to see 3 other surrounding volcanos. Once we got to the "parking lot" we began our accent. This was an hour long uphill hike that was breathtaking - in that it was beautiful and literally took my breath away because we were hiking over 4500m in elevation. We took it slow and took lots of breaks to catch our breath and admire the view. Our guides were very helpful and were always checking in on us. As we neared the Jose Rivas Refuge, the wind picked up and a few times Angus and I had to hold each other to stop ourselves from being blown over! At the top (4864m) we stopped for a short rest with some hot chocolate before heading back down. The way down was much faster and we saw a fox which was pretty neat.

We then continue to the Laguna Limpiopungo. We got to see some of the local birds and wild life as well as a lot of wild horses! We then headed out of the park and had some food before returning home in the afternoon. It was a long and tiring but absolutely epic day!

Also challenge: try to find my name on the Canadian flag (you sign it once you reach the base camp!)

      Quilotoa - Cotopaxi

      July 13, 2022 in Ecuador ⋅ ☁️ 8 °C

      National Strike

      June 14, 2022 in Ecuador ⋅ ⛅ 55 °F

Indigenous groups in Ecuador blocked some highways with mounds of earth and burning tires to protest economic policies of conservative President Guillermo Lasso.

We had to transit from Banos to Quito to make our flight to Curaçao. The protest had only started the day before and we were told the last protest was two weeks long.

At first, there was bairly anyone on the highway south of Cotopaxi national park. We approached the first blockade and had to start out on foot. Ultimately passing by multiple blockades of indigenous groups, from tree stumps to mounds of dirt. We met up with our driver on the other side of the first two blockades and we continued via motorcycle and truck bed to the last of the blockades. Safely made it to Quito after a long day of transit!

      Vom Cotopaxi nach Baños

      October 11, 2023 in Ecuador ⋅ 🌩️ 10 °C

Read more

      Mejia, Rumiñahui & Cotopaxi

      August 19, 2023 in Ecuador ⋅ ☁️ 12 °C

Our next stop was near the Cotopaxi Volcano / the Cotopaxi National Park. We stayed in Mejia at 3800m at the cheapest hostal around - which nevertheless was 50$ / night, including breakfast 💸. Luckily, it featured an amazing restaurant and an amazing view, so we were more than happy with our choice! Darwin, the young owner of both the hostal and the restaurant (and also the cook!), was so helpful and a true magician in the kitchen - every meal was simple but flawless! 🤤 (It‘s called ruta de los volcanes, if you will ever find yourself in the area, give it a go!!)
We had amazing 3 and a half days there, in which we did three hikes: two to the Rumiñahui Volcano area nearby (one to 4200 and one to 4300m) and one in the Cotopaxi National Park. The hikes to the Rumiñahui volcano were challenging, especially as Alina suffered a bit from altitude sickness on the first hike, but both were really beautiful - even though the weather had left much to be desired. Alilles brings the rain, as it seems 🤷🏻‍♀️ Still, we were lucky enough to spot a family of great Andean Condors on both hikes to the Rumiñahui Volcano (see video) - such majestic creatures!! ❤️
The hike in the Cotopaxi National Park was alright, though not very challenging, and was lacking the famous view of the Cotopaxi Volcano due to the weather until the very end. Still, it showed itself last minute, and we were still able to get some pictures of the majestic (and still active, btw) volcano!
All in all, our stay in Mejia was a full success and we really enjoyed both the hiking as well as the quiet time at our room (despite the cold - heating and hot water was not existent 🥶). Another great training for all upcoming altitude hikes! But for now, we‘re having a break from hiking and head to Ecuadors capital - Quito, here we come!
