      Cuenca - Day 2

      January 24, 2020 in Ecuador ⋅ ☁️ 20 °C

Last night ended up being a bit late and i got up today feeling tired and non social. Figured today would be a nice quiet one to myself. Wrong :)

I had been recommended Los Tiestos for a meal in cuenca so i wandered around the cute colonial streets until i found it. The head chef Juan took my order so of course i asked him what he recommends. It was the best steak ever!!! When the waiter delivered it, he demonstrated how he could cut it with a spoon, and easily. Wow! Amazing.

I asked the girl at the table behind me to take my picture and that snowballed into her and her husband (Lino and Vero) asking me to join their table, drink some of their wine bottle, eat some of their food, plus dessert. And as we chatted they offered to also take me some places when i return to Quito. So sweet. I was very quick to insist they stay with me if they visit Canada. Every single food item was incredible. This place is an absolute must-visit for any foodie. I told lino how ouzo turns cloudy white after adding water and he became obsessed ordering different anise type alcohols to reproduce the affect. Yikes, we were feeling good when we left

I also got to know Juan the chef and another local, Ben who took me to his partially constructed food venue at the main plaza. I was being treated like long lost family. Even the couple, Lino and Vero invited me to a private function for later tonight. So touching how they all made me part of their circle. I am hugely touched.

      Cuenca - Day 1

      July 18, 2022 in Ecuador ⋅ ⛅ 14 °C

I was going to say I had a quick breakfast but this is montanita. Nothing is quick. Found the bus stop at 11am and luckily boarded a bus immediately. Unluckily, it was not a direct bus. Took me 2 buses and 4.5 hours to get to the guayaquil bus station. And despite the bus station being meters away from the airport, it took 30 minutes to get there. Ah latin America haha

And when I tried to check in, the girl assisting me printed out my baggage tag and for some reason i looked at the airport codes on the tags (which i never do but will always do from now on) and could see it was wrong. My bag was going to go to quito first. I would have not received it in cuenca. I questioned it right away and they agreed it was wrong and that took another 30 minutes to sort out.

Finally in quenca, checked into my old world posada and then walked around taking a few pictures of the gorgeous buildings here. Found a downtown brewery location and hung out at the bar where i met Gabriela who was just grabbing food to go but we chatted over an hour. Everything was closed on a Monday but found a tiny karaoke place and met 3 more locals, one who took more of a liking to me than i would ever reciprocate haha. Anyways, nice people.

      Cuenca continued

      July 6, 2023 in Ecuador ⋅ ⛅ 17 °C

After 2 days spoilt in an empty dorm room, I asked if I could stay on for a discount. No. So I moved to an 8 bed mixed dormitory. Cue no sleep. The beds are comfy, but everything makes a noise, late arrivals, snoring, party animals and early risers. But a good old bunch and we got along so well, easily my best dormitory experience ever.

I was going to the Mirador de Turi, which is a high up viewpoint to see the city -best done at night because of the lights. A 20 year old Costa Rican girl asked to join me. I am the same age as her Mum :-) my plan was to walk there 1 hour, and taxi back in the dark. We stolled along, talking in English, Spanish and French. The hilarious thing was we had to climb up the hill, and this did her in. To return, we had to walk to a safe place to get a taxi. But she refused to walk and hailed a taxi on a busy 50 mile an hour road. One did stop and I practically flew through the window to get in quickly. Note to self: I avoided doing anything involving walking with her again.

The quiet hostel overnight filled up, and we were all socialising in the common area. I had some serious chats with young men, wise beyond their years and was, the centre of attention that night, with funny stories and one liners. It felt really good, like a younger version of myself was back at the helm.

Not everyone is looking term backpacking, there are some professionals who are making the most of their annual leave allowance. To be identified by those with bigger budgets and nicer clothes :-)

I convinced Kimberly and Mike to come to a thermal spa with me, Piedra del Agua on the outskirts of town. There were outdoor pools of different temperatures, then we were guided through a circuit of a red mud bath, a blue mud bath, a very hot pool and freezing one (obviously I didn't bother with that one!) In an underground cave, then a Cajon bath (steam box)* Photo is not us.... Followed by a much needed nap on a sun lounger. Needless to say, we enjoyed it immensely but didn't have our phones so no evidence of how great we looked covered in mud.

      Cuenca

      September 25, 2023 in Ecuador ⋅ ☁️ 20 °C

      Veterans Day

      November 10, 2023 in Ecuador ⋅ ☁️ 64 °F

November 10 is Veterans Day in the US, the population of expats is so high in Cuenca that they have a Veterans Day ceremony here. I didn’t take many photos but it was very nice to watch. Oddly satisfying to be around so many speaking English after almost 35 days of hearing it so infrequently.Read more
