      On a presque croisé Merlin

      Aujourd'hui on va au parc! 🎢 Détrompez vous pas à Disneyland, pas non plus le parc du Jardin des plantes. Aujourd'hui, on va au Parc de las Cajas dans les alentours de Cuenca. On voit des gens de notre hôtel avec des chaussures de marche et des kways qui partent 45 min avant nous. Aïe aïe aïe notre équipe est toujours en retard ⏳ On monte dans le bus et on arrive au parc après une petite heure de route.

      On admire le paysage en particulier une forêt plutôt étonnante qui a des airs de forêt enchantée 🌳 malheureusement pas d'elfes ou de Merlin l'enchanteur en vue. Ça sera pour une autre fois 🧙‍♂️

      Point météo de la journée : un temps brumeux avec de la pluie et une température qui mérite doudoune, bonnet et gants 🧤 Aaah ça vous fait rêver hein! Nous un peu moins je dois avouer quand on pense que c'est la canicule en France et qu'on a jamais eu aussi froid de notre vie un 28 mai ☀️ Mais on ne se laisse pas abattre et on part se promener dans le parc dans la bonne humeur. Il faut dire qu'on a eu plusieurs occasions de bien rigoler entre les glissades sur le chemin, Julie qui s'enfonce le pied dans une marre de boue (le bicolore c'est tendance en ce moment), une jolie chute pour moi dans une descente, une pause pipi incongrue (je ne rentrerais pas dans les détails mais pour la première fois de ma vie j'ai vu deux lunes en même temps) 🌚 Bref, on a bien rigolé encore une fois 💙

      Après toutes ces péripéties, on rentre à Cuenca dans la voiture de Francisco, un gentil bavard qui a beaucoup discuté avec Julie et Oriane. Emma et moi n'étions pas disponibles à ce moment là dû a une petite session sieste. 5km à pied ça use pas que les souliers! 👟

      C'est l'heure de la détente en arrivant en ville. Chacun rentre chez soi. L'équipe se sépare ce soir car Julie a réservé une petite surprise a Emma pour son anniversaire, un hôtel 5 étoiles avec jacuzzi et lit 2 places enfin 4 places plutôt d'après leurs dires. Tom et moi avec nos douches communes et notre chambre sans wifi n'avons rien à leur envier, vous vous en doutez.

      On se donne tous rendez-vous vers 21h dans un resto Mexicain de la ville où on retrouve Anaïs, une amie de prépa d'Emma et Julie (une niçoise, encore une!) 🌮🌯 21h c'est tard me direz-vous mais c'est l'horaire nécessaire pour une séance jacuzzi du côté des filles et une bonne sieste pour Tom Tom.

      Et pour finir la soirée en beauté, on s'autorise une petite gâterie avec Oriane et Anaïs, une gaufre spéciale au chocolat 😋 Un régal!

      El Cajas National Park

      Today we boarded the bus and headed to El Cajas National Park for a 3.5 hour hike. The hike was absolutely stunning. It is so hard to describe and hard to tell from the pictures, but this park felt like another planet. The plants and trees all seemed like something out of a fantasy movie (the forest specifically reminded me of the forbidden forest in Harry Potter). We hike up and around gorgeous mountains and lakes at an altitude of 3800m. While still tiring, this altitude felt much more manageable than Cotopaxi (4800m), which had me gasping for air every 5 steps! It was so cool to be able to hike in this national park without a guide or anything. Apart from a few other hikers we passed, it felt like we had the whole area to ourselves. What a cool experience and another epic day.

      This has been our last day in Ecuador. We have tickets for an overnight bus tonight that will bring us into Peru... It will be a very long travel day but we have gone to the local candy store to buy some snacks to help us through it 😂. I am excited to continue our adventures in Peru; however, I am very sad to be leaving Ecuador. This country has surprised me in so many ways and surpassed all my expectations. We have met the loveliest and most helpful people here and have been treated to incredible food and culture. The national parks and hikes have taken my breath away! The vastness of this landscape and the preserved beauty is something to behold. So many amazing memories and bucket list items checked off in Ecuador and I know there will be many more exciting things around the corner. For now, so long Ecuador and thank you for being amazing (we will be back 😁).      Read more

      El Cajas National Park ⛰️

      Holà !
      Après une bonne nuit de repos, un petit dej englouti, nous partîmes direction el cajas national park à moins d’une heure de Cuenca. ⛰️
      L’endroit est magnifique, le parc est tellement immense. Nous décidons de faire un trek de 2h, ce qui sera en réalité 4h parce que nous nous sommes perdues à travers une forêt 🌳 où les indications manquaient.
      En route, nous avons rencontré une québécoise d’une soixante d’années. Nous avons partagé nos périples de voyages. Elle était vraiment très drôle avec ses expressions typiques du Québec et surtout son accent 😅.
      Peu de temps après, la pluie 🌧️ s’abat sur nous, les ponchos sont de sortie ! Nous traversons des marécages à 3500m.
      Pour le retour, nous décidons de faire du stop, il s’agit d’une route 🛣️ sécurisée qui mène uniquement à Cuenca. Au bout de 15 min, un véhicule s’arrête, un gentil monsieur dans sa voiture de location. Il a 59 ans et travaille dans l’industrie alimentaire. Il nous dépose à l’entrée de Cuenca vers 15h.
      Nous rentrons à l’hostel pour une bonne douche froide (c’était dur de ne pas avoir d’eau chaude après l’Amazonie 🥶).
      Un petit tour de la ville est planifié pour faire des emplettes et manger un bout.
      Nous rentrons nous reposer un peu et départ 19h pour un resto indien. Très bon mais très épicé 🌶️ pour Julia (heureusement qu’elle avait précisé qu’elle ne voulait pas trop ..).

      Cuenca

      We enjoyed a day exploring Cuenca which is Ecuador's 3rd largest city. Daniel woke up and had a buffet breakfast at the hotel but Gab stayed in the room and did some yoga (after feeling a bit sore after over 14 hrs on the bus yesterday!)

      We then walked with the group to the main square where we saw some school children marching. Our guide, Guido, explained that because of the strong military culture in Ecuador, parades of this type very common thing and usually occur every Sunday.

      We then visited the local markets and tried some different local fruits (some which are quite different to fruits we have at home!) . We then went and saw the meat stalls at the markets - they sell and eat all parts of the animal. We had some pulled pork for a snack at the markets then went back to the hotel to check out our bags.

      We then went back to the main square and went to the top of the main cathedral which is considered the largest in Latin America. We walked around town for a bit. There were a lot of markets around and all of the churches were very busy with Sunday masses and parades.

      Some of our group, organised a bus to the National Park. The national park was incredible, the landscape was so picturesque and one of the lookout points was over 4100m! The last stop at the National Park included a chocolate shop/Cafe where Gab enjoyed a hot chocolate with baileys and churros.

      We then walked around the shops before heading for a quick dinner at a sports bar before boarding the night bus to Mancora, Peru at 8pm. Goodbye Ecuador - it has been amazing!!      Read more

      Éste es otro ecosistema en el que también te parece que estás en otro planeta. Aquí estamos sobre los 4000msnm y nuevamente la respiración se torna pesada, hace bastante frío y te cansas muy fácil al caminar. De todas maneras, ninguna "molestia" nos quita las ganas de seguir explorando lugares nuevos y aprendiendo de una naturaleza tan diferente a la que estamos acostumbrados.

      Los páramos son una fuente de agua más importante de lo que a simple vista aparentan. Su vegetación, no tan variada y donde predomina una hierba muy singular, se comporta como una gran esponja encima de todo el terreno rocoso. Este manto gigante de plantas de poca altura es capaz de retener y filtrar grandes cantidades de agua proveniente de las precipitaciones, que luego se infiltrarán al subsuelo para formar parte del acuífero o se escurrirán superficialmente tributando a arroyos y ríos. En buena medida gracias a esa vegetación, el resultado final será agua limpia y fresca que en esta región de Los Andes ecuatorianos es aprovechada por comunidades indígenas que de otra manera no hubieran podido asentarse por acá.       Nationalpark El Cajas & Cuenca (2)

      And once again the mountains are calling and my heart beats wildly. The decisive point why I decided to go to Cuenca was the possibility to visit the National Park 🏞 El Cajas quite easily - just take the bus up to 3,800m and go hiking in the Paramo without a guide.
      Unfortunately, it was not that easy, because the buses could not drive on the road to the NP for 3 weeks, because there was a big landslide, which took 20 houses with it. Unfortunately, not a rarity in the rainy season.
      So without further ado I took a cab to the entrance of the NP. The ride alone was breathtaking and the pictures describe quite well my impressions of my hike.      Read more

      Cajas National Park

      Even though we got some impressions from the internet, Cajas National Park really surprised us by its beauty (similar to Cuenca 🙃). We took a 13 km hike at an altitude from 3800 - 4200 m, and the route led us through beautiful alpine (andine?) landscapes, around many crystal clear mountain lakes and through fairytale-like enchanted forests. All the time (or up until the last 3km) we were blessed by almost uninterrupted sunshine and, consequentially, with quite high temperatures despite the altitude (memo to ourselves: SPF 50 does not work the same at this altitude!). We loved every second of the trek and highly recommend everyone in or around Cuenca to visit the Cajas National Park, and to do the ‚long‘ trek! It really made us look even more forward to all the other treks we are planning to do in Ecuador.

      Schluchten, Seen, Wasserfälle

      Auf einer Panoramaroute fahren wir hinauf in die Hochlandtundra zum Cajas Nationalpark. Auf etwa 4000m wandern wir durch die Überbleibsel der letzten Eiszeit. Es ist ein sehr unregelmäßiges Gebiet mit fast 240 dunklen Lagunen und unzähligen endemischen Pflanzen. Wir staunen über die Vielfalt, die sich in der rauen und feuchten Umgebung durchsetzen kann. Es ist kalt hier oben, erst gegen Mittag werden die Temperaturen angenehmer. Eigentlich sind wir gut akklimatisiert, trotzdem spielt der Puls bei den leichten Anstiegen in dieser Höhe Yo-Yo.
      Bei der Weiterfahrt nach Guayaquil queren wir den Paso Tres Cruces auf 4167m. Von hier gehts ständig steil und kurvenreich abwärts an die tropisch feuchtheiße Küste.
      An der Straße im Tiefland wechseln sich verschiedene Felder in einer unglaublichen Ausdehnung ab. Zuckerrohr, Bananen, Reis werden von hier in alle Welt exportiert.      Read more

      Vom Cajas Nationalpark nach Peru

      Bevor es auf in unser letztes Land Peru ging sind wir in Cuenca noch in den Cajas Nationalpark. Dieser war Landschaftlich wieder super schön und kälter und etwas unreal. Die Weiten an nichts könnten auch irgendwo in Schottland sein wie wir finden. Da war nicht lange wandern wollten sind wir für 2 Stündchen um den See spaziert. Da auf dem Rückweg kein Bus kam und die anderen Touris die mit uns gewartet haben dann getrampt sind, sind wir alle mit auf die Ladefläche eines Lkws. Eine sehr witzige und abenteuerliche Fahrt. Im Nachbus sind wir dann über die Grenze nach Peru. Im Bus haben wir eine Reisegruppe in unserem Alter kennengelernt mit denen wir dann auch abends feiern gegangen sind. Angekommen in Mancora hatten wir dann wieder 30 Grad einen Pool, ein Partyhostel und den Pazifik vor der Tür, Hier lässt es sich 3 Tage aushalten bis wir weiter nach Südperu fliegen.Read more

      Wanderung um die Lagune

      An diesem Tag haben wir uns mal wieder raus aus der Stadt getraut, dafür sind wir vorerst zum Busbahnhof spaziert. Dort angekommen, ohne vorher zu wissen, wann und wo der Bus in den Nationalpark Cajas fahren würde, haben wir uns ein wenig durch die Gegend gefragt. Dies dauert nicht lang und wir fanden ziemlich direkt unser Ziel. Zu unserem Vorteil sollte der Bus auch in den nächsten 10 Minuten starten, aus denen dann jedoch 25 wurden bis ausreichend Personen zugestiegen waren. Bezahlen mussten wir während der Fahrt, da wir ohne Ticket eingestiegen sind. 6$ leichter und 50 Minuten später waren wir im Nationalpark neben der Lagune. Nach unserer letzten leicht Missglückten Wanderung waren wir diesmal besser ausgestattet mit ausreichend Flüssigkeit und Proviant, zudem hatten wir vorher schön gefrühstückt. Unserer kleinen Wanderung stand nun nur noch die Anmeldung an der Information vor der Lagune zuvor. Zu unserer Überraschung wurde diese von einem bewaffneten Sicherheitsmann bewacht. Davon ließen wir uns nicht abhalten und sind nach dem Hinterlassen unserer Daten durchgestartet. Außer uns sahen wir Anfangs nur ein paar Personen, die jedoch einen anderen Weg wählten. So hatten wir also den Weg eine lange Zeit für uns. So konnten wir in Ruhe, die Aussicht und das Wetter sehr genießen. Wir machten immer mal wieder eine kleine Pause an den unterschiedlichsten Orten. Hier bleiben vor allem ein kleiner Fels im Grünen auf dem man sich gut erholen konnte und schöne Gespräche in Erinnerung. Nach bummelig 3 Stunden hatten wir die Lagune umrundet und machten uns auf den Weg zur Bushaltestelle. Nach kurzem Warten kam ein Bus der uns und acht weitere Wanderer mitnahm. In Cuenca angekommen suchten wir uns direkt ein Taxi welches uns zum Café Austria brachte, wo wir zu Abend aßen.Read more
