      Our first day in Salvador!

      November 17, 2023 in El Salvador ⋅ ⛅ 26 °C

A year after saying to Charlotte, while we were freezing our butts off surfing in the Pacific Ocean in San Francisco, that next year we would surf and the water would be warm, here we are at Eldorado Surf Resort in Salvador!
We arrived in El Zonte this afternoon.
Our first impressions: it’s defo a surfer’s paradise!
      The waves are huge!
      The crowd is young!
Our first smoothie at the resort did not disappoint either!
We were lucky to be greeted by an amazing sunset!
We had salmon tartar on avocado salad for dinner. Delicious!

      Exploring El Zonte!

      November 18, 2023 in El Salvador ⋅ ☀️ 30 °C

After a restful night, we had another delicious smoothie and a bowl of tropical fruits before setting off to explore the village of El Zonte!
Colorful and filled with little shops and restaurants, it made for a nice morning walk. We also walked along the shoreline to explore potential photo opps! You must know us girls by now!!!
Lunch was a delicious tuna salad and tuna wrap at the resort.
The wind and current were still too strong to get out there on the surfboards this afternoon but Raul and Will are expecting us tomorrow morning as the sea will finally calm down.
We spent the afternoon between the pool, our sunbeds and going for walks on the beach! We indulged in another smoothie! Life is beautiful!
Fun fact: there was a power outage that lasted all afternoon and well after sunset (which was another gorgeous one!).
For dinner we walked back to El Zonte to enjoy a shrimp cocktail and avocado salad (I know! We are obsessed!) at Escencia Nativa!

      Surfing, turtles and caves!

      November 19, 2023 in El Salvador ⋅ ☀️ 29 °C

What a day filled with emotions!
We finally got to go surfing!
Both of us managed to stand on our boards many times!
      Such an exhausting sport though!!
After a rest in the sun we set out to walk on the beach and go explore the nearby caves.
On our way we had the sweetest surprise ever waiting for us!
It was time to release the baby turtles to the sea! It was priceless to witness this phenomenon! Such an experience!
We found the caves and had fun « immortalizing » them… and us inside them!
Our afternoon was spent between the pool and our sunbeds.
We had dinner at El Vikingo tonight with some of the other guests.
Fish cakes for appetizers and a Vietnamina (Asian noodles loaded with veggies) with shrimps as our main course.
After all the efforts of our surfing lesson we indulged in an amazing carrot cake complete with salted caramel and pecans!

      Surf and yoga!

      November 20, 2023 in El Salvador ⋅ ☀️ 27 °C

Another amazing day in Salvador perfecting our surfing techniques!
After our lesson we went to the village to try « pupusas », a local specialty that looks a bit like pancakes made of rice or corn flour filled with different mixtures. We indulged in three different ones: cheese and avocado, cheese and « asparagus » and cheese with squash and zucchini. Delicious!
At sunset, we went for a yoga class in a beautiful setting at the Garten hotel!
      How inspiring!
Let it be known that it was my first yoga class in person and I absolutely loved it!
Dinner was a very tasteful seafood chowder complete with salad and mushroom focaccia!
Early night for us tonight as we are leaving at 6:00 tomorrow morning to go on yet a new adventure!

      Surf, El Tunco and sunset!

      November 23, 2023 in El Salvador ⋅ ☀️ 32 °C

      New day, new adventures!
This morning we went to Canegue for breakfast, a restaurant owned by Oli who used to live in Charlesbourg. We ate an AMAZING breakfast before heading out to a new spot for our surfing lesson. We rode at the open back of a truck in true Salvadorian style to get there! That was pretty cool!
Now… we were past the « breaking point ». I was way out of my zone of comfort and did not have so much fun. It was a different story for Charlotte who found it a challenge but managed to enjoy herself.
We headed on the local bus to El Tunco this afternoon. Such a colorful village! We had a great time eating more pupusas and frozen yogurt as well as doing a bit of shopping.
Our last sunset was spent with our feet in the sea. It was a beautiful one and we made sure to take plenty of pictures of it!
We treated ourselves to a very nice dinner at the Garten hotel: sushis and a grilled salmon and avocado salad!

      El Zonte, El Salvador

      April 2, 2019 in El Salvador ⋅ ☀️ 32 °C

      Everybody's Going Surfing,...El Salvador

      April 27, 2017 in El Salvador ⋅ ☀️ 35 °C

We drove off the volcano top (not stopping at any of the miradors due to reports of armed robberies) and almost immediately were back in the hot and steamy conditions. We had a quick pit stop at a supermarket and we were delighted to see the high prices of Guatemala a thing of the past. A couple of hours of easy driving (great road surface not a tope/reductor/tumulo in sight) we hit the coast.

This whole coast is famous for its surfing, and we picked out a nice sounding spot thinking we would stay a day or two before meandering on along the coast. However, what we hadn't bargained for was an amazing camp spot, with two pools, hammocks everywhere, great WiFi, free electricity, and even a terrace overlooking the surf beach (which had a soaking pool). All of this for 10 bucks!

Inevitably one day turned into a week, whilst we whiled away the days hopping between pools and hammocks. Lunch invariably involved some delicious pupusas, and would have amounted to a couple of bucks each (if it wasn't for the large beers that accompanied it). At most we stretched ourselves to walk a massive 800m to the end of the cove, but many days we didn't even manage that! To be fair it's stinkingly hot (35C+) and really humid so you can't do much, and there's really not much here (half a dozen rustic restaurants). I doesn't even cool down much in the evenings and we are thankful for the air con.

Beach life is dangerous to the belly so we eventually hauled ourselves of this beautiful spot and on south towards the Honduran border.

      Das Surffieber hat uns gepackt

      April 26, 2018 in El Salvador ⋅ ⛅ 32 °C
