After a planes, trains and bus journey of about 40 hours, we have arrived to beautiful and lively Porto in Portugal. We saved the best climb of the day to the end. Arriving at our quaint room up 80 stairs in a beautiful old renovated building in the downtown area, a shower and a beer was the reviving tonic. And a good book was the travel companion in the wait times.

Porto to Perafita

I knew this was a walking trip and experienced it today departing Porto along the Douro River via Coastal Route and then followed the Atlantic Ocean to town of Perafita where are spending the night. We took our time and enjoyed a lovely walk through historic park called Jardim do Passeio Alegre. I loved the scent of Jasmine from the trees, the groomed grounds and figurines in the fountain where we spotted a seagull fond of as well. Also bought Camino shell and tied to my backpack which is common for pilgrims to do. On way to Perafita, saw this cool bottle brush tree with the red flowers. We did 12 miles today and have another 12 mile trip planned for tomorrow to Povoa de Varzim.Read more

Day 19 -Going solo

This morning I said goodbye to my friends and headed out of Porto on the Central Route which took me to the town of Vairao for the evening.

I am staying at Albergue de Peregrinos do Mosteiro de Vairão, the monastery where it is located is nearly 1,000 years old (built in the 11th century). While the bathrooms/showers are dormitory style, I have a private, corner room on the top floor in the tower with sweeping views of the grounds and country side. It’s beautiful and with only 4 rooms, all private, on this floor, it’s very quiet. All for 35 euros which includes breakfast!

When I arrived I was hacking up a storm (and no that’s not why they stuck me in the tower, I had requested it) the manager of the auberge was so sweet and made sure I had extra blankets and tea with lemon. Told me there was no rush to leave in the morning, if I needed to sleep in.

There are quite a few pilgrims here and I ran into a few on my way to dinner. All lovely folks.

Sick Day for Me

Whatever this cold bug is, it got the better of me today. Still a sore throat and coughing, but developed a head ache and stomach issues. So, while everyone else went out touring, I sat on the patio baking in other sun and reading. By the end of the afternoon I was feeling better enough to go out to dinner with everyone. We went to a very cool bar high above the Douro River and ate on the terrace while watching the sunset. Afterward, we came back to the apartment and Noelle did tarot card readings for Jayme and Deb. Now it is time for bed. Tomorrow my walk resumes.Read more

Day 18 - Porto & Decisions

Today was a relax and explore Porto day, but truth be told I spent the day resting and contemplating what it was I want to get out of the Camino.

My friends are walking the Coastal Route and I have decided to continue on the Central route doing the last 150 miles on my own. No reflection on my traveling companions, just something I feel I need to do. We should all arrive Santiago about the same time and reconnect.

The first part of the Camino out of Lisbon was not well traveled. Arlene and I were the oldest women walking and we would go for long periods without running into other pilgrims. So I would not have felt comfortable walking it alone. But there will be more pilgrims starting their journey out of Porto, so more people will be around

Tonight we had dinner at Six Ponte Sky Bar that overlooked the river. We sat outside and the views were breathtaking.

Last day in Porto

Porto is an old historic city and found another cathedral for my 2nd stamp today. Saw from a distance the Douro River that goes through Porto. Mostly a day of rest as our first day of walking is tomorrow. Beautiful sunny day and hoping I got my technical issues resolved with eSIM card, only 2 hours with tech support 😩

Day 17 - Porto!

We are all in Porto! More than half way to Santiago. Today Arlene and I joined her husband (Richard), sister (Noel), and sister-in-law (Deb). We’ve rented a very cute 3 br apartment near the cathedral. Tomorrow we will explore Porto (but I may opt for another rest day while they explore to kick this cold out) and then continue on to Santiago on Thursday.Read more

My first stamp

Spent day walking around Porto while waiting for air bnb to be available. Got my first stamp at Tower of Clerics, beautiful church. We picked up some pizzas and salad for at home dinner tonight and passed my first Camino shell marking. Jayme and Arlene are still fighting a cold. Air bnb is a great spot, right in the center and great back porch.Read more

Our Campanions Have Arrived

Today I woke up in the hostel just across the river from where we are meeting Richard, Noelle and Deb. It was only about a mile and a half from them, but we just didn't have the energy to get there. So we took a car and met them at the rental office where we left backpacks and poles while we waited for our unit to be readied. We went to lunch at Time Out Market. It was great as we could all go to a different vendor and get just what we wanted. Afterward, we went to the Cathedral. The newbies got their first stamp while Jayme and I got another stamp and another credential. The ones we have are already nearly full. Next we went to Sport Zone and got hiking poles for Deb and Noelle. By then our rental was ready. It is very cute, 3 beds 2 baths in the middle of old town with a washer and outdoor space. And the weather has completely changed so we can enjoy. Everyone napped and we're still too tired to go out for dinner, so we ate pizza and salad. Now I am in bed again and exhausted. Hopefully, we will be able to explore Porto a bit tomorrow before we move on.Read more

Day 19
I'm in Porto

Grijo to Porto today. And guess what? It was cold and rainy most of the day. But we are champions and pushed on.
Most of the route was through towns and villages. But there was a rather steep and long and muddy and rocky forest section. Yep, that hill had it all! An equally treacherous descent was fun. C heck out my pics and zoom in on Jayme and you will be able to see the inclines a bit better. Hills are so hard to capture on camera.
During our day, we met a couple of our pilgrim friends, Mano from France and a lot of other places, and La from South Korea. It is always a spirit boost to stop and talk with friends, even if you need to use a translation app!
We learned the Pope died today while we were having tea and waiting for the pharmacy to open. Jayme now has conjunctivitis with her cold.
We did our laundry so we are not stinky and smelly when we meet up with Richard, Noelle and Deb tomorrow. And we went to dinner and had an excellent meal for 25 Euro each. Now medicated, I am getting ready to sleep.
We are on the other side of the river from where the cathedral is and where our stay is in Porto. We thought we were about 4-5 miles from there, but turns out our hostel is close to the bridge we need to cross and where we need to be is close to the other end. So, only a little over a mile distance! Happily, we won't have to get up too soon, and will be able to sleep in a bit. More than half walk to Santago!Read more
