      Ankunft in Abu Dhabi

      Als wir in Abu Dhabi ankommen ist es schon Dunkel. Hier hat Mohammed ein 20 Stockiges Haus an dem wir stehen können. Sein Fahrer Dean empfängt uns und hilft mit dem Parkticket, wo ist die nächste Laundry und was es hier noch gibt.

      Wir können auch das Appartement im 20sten Stock benutzen. Daneben gibt es auch einen Swimmingpool.

      Und so stehen wir mitten in Abu Dhabi in einem Viertel, das überwiegend von Indern, Pakistani und Menschen aus Bangladesch bewohnt wird.      Read more

      VAE: Das Beste kommt zum Schluss

      Der letzte Tag unserer Reise hält noch einmal mit ein (eher unerwartetes) Highlight bereit: Abu Dhabi.

      Hin und zurück bringt uns Sabir, ein Kumpel von Kamran, dessen Auto allerdings kein bisschen verbeult ist. Die Fahrt verläuft glatt, der Start in Abu Dhabi dagegen etwas holprig. Unser erste Station ist die Scheich-Zayid-Moschee. Wir sind schlecht vorbereitet, haben weder Online-Tickets noch die korrekte Kleidung. Beides lässt sich jedoch korrigieren und der Aufwand lohnt sich: Es ist viel los, trotzdem strahlt dieser Ort Ruhe, Gelassenheit und Eleganz aus.

      Nach kürzeren Fotostops im Heritage Village (Touri Nepp), dem Emirates Palace Hotel (was ist die Steigerung von pompös?) und dem Präsidentenpalast Qasr al Watan (joaaaah) gehts zum zweiten großen Stop heute: dem Louvre. Auch dieses Gebäude hat es uns angetan, seine Architektur noch mehr als die ausgestellte Kunst. Beschreiben lässt sich das alles eher schlecht - wir lassen also die Fotos für sich sprechen.

      Vielleicht haben wir uns inzwischen an das Land, die Hektik, den Gigantismus gewöhnt. Vielleicht ist Abu Dhabi aber auch einfach eine Umdrehung ruhiger, entspannter, authentischer. Angefühlt hat sich die Hauptstadt der Vereinigten Arabischen Emirate jedenfalls besser als Dubai.      Read more

      Dubai day

      We landed at 5.30am yesterday and had had the foresight to book our room for the previous night as well as the night we were actually here. It meant by 7am, we were in our room, stretched out on the bed gradually uncricking our tortured bones after the long flight. Col seemed to get in a few hours sleep on the plane, but as usual with me it was sporadic and my smart watch proudly told me I’d slept ‘lightly’ for just over 3hrs 🥱

      I’ve missed a bit. As we exited into main arrivals, scanning boards for the taxi sign, Col was approached by a guy offering a taxi. Before I could give him ‘the look’, he’d accepted a taxi ride offered by a random guy. The random guy then offered to take our bags, and shot off at speed towards wherever his ‘non’ taxi car might be. It was hard to keep up and I was fully reconciled to saying goodbye to that bag forever. Anyway, we eventually arrived at his non cab, he loaded us and the bags in and off we went. We agreed a price, which, even for an airport run, sounded high, and sped towards the hotel. I was over-tired and cross, muttering in the back about non licensed cabs etc. On the plus side, we prob got to our hotel quicker which was a bonus, but at a cost. We’ll know on our return to the airport just how ripped off we were!

      The Shangri-La Dubai is by far the most luxurious place we have ever stayed in (apart from when we stayed here in 2017!) The service is second to none, people are standing everywhere (is that their main role?), they press the lift call button for you, just randomly ask if all is well and smile genuinely at your answer, as you walk by, etc.

      After a rest, shower and late buffet breakfast, we head off in the hotel’s shuttle bus to Dubai Mall.

      Went there for two reasons:
      1) to see the last Lush shop on our world tour ✔️
      and more importantly
      2) for Col to dive in the shark 🦈 tank of the Dubai Aquarium ✔️

      The mall is bigger than huge and ginormous, if there’s a word for that? The expanse of shiny floors, opulent lights, decor, it’s another world. There are more shops than you can shake a stick at, including shops which have disappeared at home, but still exist in the Dubai bubble.

      As Col readied himself for his dive (sporting the swimmers we’d bought at Bondi Junction Mall before the horrific incident) I went round the aquarium…..      Read more

      Um mal etwas das Bazarfeeling vom Orient zu erhalten sind wir auf den Souk gefahren. Da wir heute abend fliegen eben zur prallen Sonne um 12:00 Uhr. Mittags machen das natürlich nur völlig beknackte Turis. So sind wir dann aber auch behandelt worden. Die Kinder musste man echt festhalten.
      Nachher geht es die Nacht durch weiter nach Sri Lanka.
      Dubai ist schon verrückt. Tradition und Moderne haben in dieser unwirklichen Welt gleichermaßen ihre Berechtigung. (s.Bild) Wir sind froh, es gesehen zu haben, aber uns reichen die 5 Tage.      Read more

      Desert Adventure

      Arman and I took the car out in the desert, the big red dune. Driving through deep loose sand is not Lola's forte, but she is doing remarkably well. Even though we were walking to evaluate the route never knowing the shape of the dunes and the surface, but regardless we got stuck a few times and had to undig her. Good I invested in my maxtraxx, money well spent!

      Bling bling Dubai

      Dubai is really another world compared to the south of Iran. Mega skyscrapers, bling palm trees and soooo many good restaurants. 🤤
      As all eastern borders of Iran were closed still (Turkmenistan is closed due to Corona, Afghanistan is closed obviously and in Pakistan you are escorted by the police as it’s too dangerous in the south), we decided to take a flight to…. Bangkok! From there we will explore Southeast Asia on two wheels! 😍 we are looking forward to lush green Jungles and tasty food.

      Kai and I had hoped to be in Delhi early Sunday morning but visa issues and flight challenges resulted in a longer stay in Egypt and a 28 hr. layover in Dubai🥺.

      The Burj Khalifa (world’s tallest building) is impressive and the Dubai Mall is bustling with residents and people from all over the world. Shopping is not my thing but I did enjoy people watching, the aquarium and the Dubai Fountain show.Read more

      Das Experiment

      Um die Fähre nach Dubai entspannt zu nehmen, sollen wir um 7 Uhr da sein, Abfahrt ist um 9 Uhr. Also stehen wir um 5.30 Uhr auf und schwitzen durch die letzten 10km im Iran. So der Plan. Mit dezenter Verspätung werden um 10 Uhr dann die Pässe kontrolliert und das Gepäck aufgegeben. Von nun an sitzen wir mit 150 anderen Gestrandeten in einer Transithalle fest, die wir nicht mehr verlassen können. Egal - ein paar Handyspiele, Serien und nette Gespräche lassen Stunden vergehen. Es kommen Gerüchte auf, dass die Klimaanlage auf unserer Fähre nicht funktioniert - offizielle Meldungen? Fehlanzeige. Mit abgepackten Fertigkuchen wird die Meute besänftigt. Als am späten Nachmittag immer noch die Informationspoltik, der eines stummen Kaktus gleicht, werden die ersten Gemüter nervös und lautstarke Wortgefechte werden häufiger. Wir fühlen uns plötzlich als Kompasen im Streifen „Das Experiment“, in dem Wärter und Insassen aufs Äußerste im Sozialgefüge erforscht werden. Blödeleien fangen an - wir spielen Bowling und Fußball mit leeren Flaschen und werfen Münzen möglichst nahe an die Wand. Die Offiziellen trauen sich mittlerweile nur noch mit Tüten voller Essen in die Schlangengrube. Brot und Spiele bringen alle zur Vernunft. Als die Hoffnung sich mehr und mehr verflüchtet überhaupt noch auf den Kutter zu kommen, öffnet sich auf einmal die Tür - nach über 16 Stunden Verspätung stürzen wir uns auf den persischen Golf 🙆🙆Read more

      Nightshow am Burj Khalifa

      Die Megacity am persischen Golf sprengt alle Grenzen, die wir aus der westlichen Welt kennen. Sie hat nur ein Ziel: Superlative. Höchstes Gebäude, größte Mall, dickste Scheibe eines Aquariums, höchster Tennisplatz, längste führerlose Metro… die Liste kennt kein Ende. Wir fühlen uns wie Ameisen 🐜, als wir durch die Wolkenkratzerschluchten radeln. Mit schmalem Budget läuft es dann auch einfach mal auf eine mehrstündige Tischtennis 🏓 Session im Decathlon hinaus - die ist for free. Bei vielen Dingen sind die Dubaijaner*innen schon im Futur II und XtraLarge unterwegs - jedoch beim Stromgewinnen durch Kohle und die Tatsache, dass es keine Kanalisation gibt und das Abwasser lediglich mit LKWs außer Sichtweite gekarrt wird, würde wohl sogar den Römern ein Grinsen abluxen.Read more
