Post walk: +1 - Col du Gd St Bernard to

      June 19, 2023 in Switzerland ⋅ ☁️ 29 °C

Before I left the Pass this morning, I popped over to Italy, enjoyed the amazing views, was lucky enough to see a mountain goat, and met up with another two Australian pilgrims: Cathy and Geoff. They were starting out on the first stage of the Italian leg. I took a taxi down the mountain to Orsieres, then took a bus (train replacement) and train back to Martigny, where I was able to quickly transfer to the Geneva express! I am sitting in my hotel room now relaxing and reflecting on my time in Switzerland. I like pretty much everything about Switzerland; there are services all around you. I never had to worry about a place to stay or what I would be eating. Obviously, the landscape is phenomenal, and everywhere you look, you can see something beautiful. I have included some photos of Paulette, Alison, and Matt (the Californians), and I have included some of the lovely pieces I saw in the hospice (as well as the church itself). P.S. as a reflection on my entire walk: my gear was first class - thank you to all my BMC friends for your wisdom and advice (it made all the difference). I'd also like to send a shout-out to Andrew T. Not only was he a great walking companion, but he was also a source of ongoing invaluable advice as he forged ahead of me on the Path - thank you, Andrew 😊Read more

      Day 3🇨🇭 part 2!

      July 23, 2022 in Switzerland ⋅ ⛅ 22 °C

After the peak view, we went looking for a coffee and somewhere to have our sandwiches from our beloved COOP!
Then we decided to descend back to Col du Pillon. Again the view was beautiful going down. After that we had to catch trains with our final stop being Geneva (don’t get mixed up - we were in Genova, Italy, now we’re going to Geneva, Switzerland).
Before that though, I wanted to make a stop in Montreux to see the Freddy Mercury statue. We only had half an hour between trains so we ran to the statue and then back to the train station! Quick stop but exactly what we wanted. We’ve also started to get used to the rucksacks so it’s not much of a problem for us anymore to carry them around.
So that was day 3! Progress in our pass statistics!

      Day 3🇨🇭

      July 23, 2022 in Switzerland ⋅ ⛅ 29 °C

Woke up in Lugano at 6:00. There was a train leaving for Les Diablerets at 7:00 - for that destination we had to change 4 trains, and it took a total of 6h and 18m.
The first train was Lugano-Zurich, and I’m mentioning it because it passes through the world’s longest railway tunnel, at 57 kilometres and takes 20 minutes to do so! Our goal today was to get to Glacier 3000 and that’s achievable only by going to Les Diablerets, getting a bus to Col du Pillon and from there the cable car to the top of the mountain. Glacier 3000 is a Swiss company that operates different cable cars in the area, and this particular one is a bridge from two different peaks at 3000 metres above sea level. The “peak walk” as it is called, is the only suspension bridge connecting two peaks!
The weather today was cloudy and misty but at least not rainy. The altitude made it a bit hard to breathe in the beginning but after walking a few minutes we got used to it. We were the first in our group of cable car on the peak walk so we got a bit of time for ourselves for photos and enjoying the view. In the beginning I was a big scared of the bridge cause I was only looking down (first ever thing NOT to do on a nearly transparent bridge) but then I got used to it. We got to the opposite peak and the view was beautiful. The wind was rather cold though - we were dressed correctly but there were people in shorts and we felt sorry for them 😂.

      Continuing part 2!!

Geneva for a couple of hours

      October 18, 2023 in Switzerland ⋅ 🌧 15 °C

We fly home tomorrow. We arrived at our airport hotel around 4 and jumped on the free bus toward the Old Town, did a brisk walk to see the beautiful Saint-Pierre Cathedral and grab a quick bite. I’m behind on photos and stories from the past few days but I’ve been hiking to the Edge of The World and more… so I have a good excuse. I wanted to get some of these photos up before I close my eyes.

Geneva is a lovely city. It does not feel crowded and I saw virtually no graffiti. It seemed clean with no trash in the streets. People are dressed so nice with gorgeous coats. They drive like madmen and between the cars, motorcycles and bikes you have to really watch crossing the street. This mom was at a busy intersection with her very tired looking child. I can’t imagine transporting my child in this traffic!

      CERN Large Hadron Collider

      July 19, 2022 in Switzerland ⋅ ☀️ 27 °C

Today we got to see the CERN Large Hadron Collider. By "see it" we actually didn't see anything that cool. The LHC is actually 100 meters underground and has restricted access. It is underground because the radiation it produces needs proper insulation, and that was the most cost effective alternative to building a large concrete structure around the experiment. So needless to say, no one is often "down" there observing anything. At least not during the experiments. All the data is collected by sensors and computers

The goal of CERN and the LHC is to reproduce hard to naturally observe scenarios regarding particle collision and to observe, and accumulate anti-matter. Its most famous recent discovery was the Higgs boson.

The equipment used to accelerate particles was actually built little by little as the LHC is only the most recent addition. Previous accelerators such as the Protons Synchrotron and the Super Protons Synchrotron (SPS) are smaller and work in series with the LHC. The smaller accelerators speed up hydrogen particles before releasing them to larger accelerators. The LHC is the final step (before collision) and can get the particles up to top speed.

Here's a 5 min video that explains this better than I probably can.

      CERN is the second

      April 10 in Switzerland ⋅ ☁️ 12 °C

Here I found myself at my second particle accelerator on this trip, at CERN the largest in the world. There's a shiny new science exhibit, which showcases the ambitious science and engineering that happens here.

The art exhibits were quite trippy. I got sucked into the high dimensions of the glowing mobius.

      Happy birthday Sparsh!

      April 8 in France ⋅ ☁️ 19 °C

I rode the train to Geneva, where I was met by Sparsh. She cycles between France and Geneva each day for work, so she's a kindred spirit. Schopper carefully observes her bicycle, and approves of the same good tires.

We ride back straight towards the Haut Jura mountains "until we can't anymore". This is where I shelter from the storm.

The next day is Sparsh's birthday. So her boys Ayu and Kiran, with all the fuss that it entails, blew up balloons and 'helped' Patrice put together a surprise for mom. A joyful little family moment.

Sparsh reminds me I can't call her a kiddo anymore. 🙂

      Coronacraziness

      March 15, 2020 in France ⋅ ☀️ 13 °C

And then there was one... Well we were pretty lucky, we got to do everything except chill in Abu Dhabi on the way home thanks to this mad mad world! We had our last day in the slopes in Switzerland on Friday then they closed it, then last day on the piste in France yesterday, then they closed it. Seams like everywhere we’ve been they shut it down as we leave??? Sitting in my hotel having 2 minute noodles & tuna, ghost town here in Geneva, can’t even buy a crossiant! Oh well I’ve got microwave popcorn to make & 2 bottles of French red to drink! Oh & 3 rolls of toot paper to waste 😁Read more

      Grüne Idylle

      April 25, 2023 in France ⋅ ☁️ 10 °C

Read more

      Change

      April 25, 2023 in France ⋅ ☁️ 9 °C

"It can feel both unpleasant and somewhat risky to change your own world. But perhaps it's even more risky to do nothing, and not to try to discover how good life can be."

~ Erling Kagge (The Philosophy of an Explorer)

"And a life is like that. There’s no need to fear change, or necessarily welcome it, not when you don’t have anything to lose. Change is just what life is."

~ Matt Haig (How to stop Time)
