      Eiffel Tower

      It was an early start today. We headed to Kings Cross Station and caught the Eurostar to Paris in preparation for our trip to Disneyland.

      The first thing we decided to do was visit the Eiffel Tower. We wanted to go up the tower, but of course the tickets for the lift up the tower sold out months ago, so it looks like we have a few steps to climb instead. 674 of them to be exact.

      Dani is not a big fan of heights, so she stayed at ground level with plans to seek out a gluten free bakery she had spotted on Google (more on that later). The rest of us, including the Pearce's, headed for the stairs.

      Everyone did a great job on the climb up the stairs even the little ones. However the number of people at the top made things a little unpleasant, especially given that it was quite a warm and humid day. We spent a bit of time enjoying the view and then made our way back down to meet Dani.

      Verdict: it was a fun and worthwhile experience, but the views OF the Eiffel Tower from the ground are probably than the views FROM the Eiffel Tower.      Read more

      Mit dem Zug nach Versailles

      Mit einem belegten Baguette in der Hand ging’s dann zum Zug, mit dem wir circa 30 Minuten Richtung Westen zum 85.000 Einwohner Ort Versailles gefahren sind. Eine angenehme Fahrt, ohne Verspätung oder Zwischenfälle. Versailles ist weltweit bekannt für das größtenteils für den „Sonnenkönig“ Ludwig XIV. im 17. Jahrhundert erbaute Schloss Versailles und den dort unterzeichneten Friedensvertrag von Versailles von 1919. Der Friedensvertrag von Versailles wurde am 28. Juni 1919 zwischen dem Deutschen Reich einerseits sowie Frankreich, Großbritannien, den Vereinigten Staaten und ihren Verbündeten andererseits geschlossen und beendete den Ersten Weltkrieg auf völkerrechtlicher Ebene. Vom Bahnhof aus ging’s dann direkt los zum Schloss Versailles.Read more

      Und hier sind wir beim Eiffelturm! Mit Fotos und Videos lässt sich das nicht einfangen. Man muss ihn gesehen haben! Und wir können nicht umhin, einige interessante Fakten zu teilen.

       1. Er wurde 1889 zur Weltausstellung in Paris als Symbol für Ingenieurleistungen erbaut.

       2. Ursprünglich als temporäre Konstruktion gedacht — es war geplant, ihn nach 20 Jahren abzureißen, aber der Turm blieb wegen seiner Nutzung in der Telekommunikation.

       3. Die Höhe des Turms beträgt 330 Meter, einschließlich der Antenne, und er war bis 1930 das höchste Bauwerk der Welt.

       4. Wartung — alle 7 Jahre wird der Turm neu gestrichen, um ihn vor Korrosion zu schützen.

       5. Beliebtheit — der Eiffelturm ist eine der meistbesuchten kostenpflichtigen Sehenswürdigkeiten der Welt. Es wird jedes Jahr von etwa 7 Millionen Menschen besucht!

      Ian arrives

      Unlike our experience travelling from CDG Airport Ian’s ride was about 45 minutes. After he freshened up we headed out for a promenade to check out our arrondissement. We walked up to the Seine and had stared walking towards the Tour Eiffel when the rain started. We took shelter under a tree but the rain got heavier and didn’t look like it would let up, so we decided to head back in the direction of our hotel and find a nice place to have dinner.

      We stumbled across Cafe Ribe; they had a table inside and so we stopped for dinner. The staff here were very friendly and welcoming. I finally satisfied my need for a Steak Tartare which was very good, Ian chose a pork sausage from the Auvergne, and Katie had an omelette with potatoes, bacon and onion. All the meals looked and tasted delicious.

      In Parisian restaurants all the tables are often very close together and so inevitably we start up a conversation with our neighbours. First of all we spoke with a lovely couple from California. It was her first time in France and he had been a student at the Sorbonne but had not been back for forty years. We chatted with them for a while, but they had to leave as they had an early flight home in the morning.

      Then another couple was seated near us and they were excited to hear Aussie accents. They were a lovely couple from Brisbane and this was their first trip to Europe. Interestingly, like Danielle and Katie, they had just spent two weeks in Scotland and had visited many of the same places. They were off to the Moulin Rouge for the late show. We recommended what we had eaten for dinner and they went with the sausage and the omelette. After France, they were heading up to Norway to ride the Flåm railway and see the Northern lights.

      We were too full for dessert as we still had pastries from our tour to be consumed. Ian did have a digestive (Armagnac) which pleased the waiter (and Ian) and meant he fell asleep as soon as he hit the pillow.

      Our walk home was rain free and we had a lovely view of the Tour Eiffel all aglow.      Read more

      Seine Side-Story

      Nach unserem aufregenden Vormittag auf dem Flohmarkt von Montreuil entscheiden wir uns, unsere Entdeckungsreise an der Seine fortzusetzen. Wir machen uns auf den Weg zum Port des Suffren, wo unsere nächste Abenteueretappe auf uns wartet; eine Flussfahrt auf der Seine.

      Wir lassen uns Zeit und halten unterwegs noch an einem der vielen Trinkwasserbrunnen von Paris an. Dort bekommt man gefiltertes Mineralwasser in bester Qualität gratis. Wir füllen unsere Flaschen auf und machen uns auf den Weg zum Schiff..

      Das liegt majestätisch gleich unterhalb des Eiffelturms an der Seine. Ute jammerte etwas über die gestiegenen Temperaturen und wir fanden uns daher auf dem Unterdeck ein, was ich als gute Entscheidung herausstellte. Oben war es heiß und voll besetzt - unten hingegen schattig und luftig und trotzdem konnte man alles prima sehen und gute Fotos machen. Wir genießen die spektakuläre Aussicht auf die berühmten Uferpromenaden, den Louvre und andere Wahrzeichen von Paris..

      Als die Sonne langsam hinter den Horizont sank und die Lichter von Paris zu leuchten begannen, kehrten wir mit einem Gefühl der Erfüllung und Dankbarkeit zum Port des Suffren zurück. Wir sind noch in einem Sushirestaurant gegangen und haben uns dann zurück auf den Weg zu unserem Wohnmobil gemacht.      Read more

      Escargot anyone?

      After a day of sightseeing, we returned to our hotel for our next Gate 1 tour orientation meeting. Our new tour director is Simeon, a Frenchman from the south of France. We have 28 people on this part of our trip and they're all American. We briefly introduced each other and got a quick overview of our next two weeks. Simeon gave us tickets to the boat cruise on the Seine and sent us off on our own to see Paris.
      We joined with our friends and decided to have supper together before heading to the boat since we wanted to sail during sunset. So we found a restaurant close to the Eiffel tower and sampled escargot and a pepperoni pizza.
      The escargots were served traditional style which means they're still in their shells. Using a type of tongs to hold the escargot shell, a tiny two pronged fork is used to find the meat and pry it out. The snails were cooked in butter and garlic and were good, but had a slight fishy or swampy taste.
      So today, we had waffles, crepes and now escargots. That's pretty authentic Parisian culture!      Read more

      Sunset cruise on the Seine

      Full of escargots, we walked past the Eiffel tower, crossed the street and descended the steps to the river cruise dock where we caught the 8:00 pm boat. Sunset was slated for 8:40 pm, so the timing was perfect.
      We sailed past bridges and iconic buildings as our day turned into evening and the scenery was bathed in hues of pink and orange before slipping into darkness. Lights started twinkling on either side of the river and the boats themselves became ornaments on a shimmering ribbon of water.
      Of course, the brightest star in the sky was the golden Eiffel tower who shone like a beacon in the night, calling to us like the sirens to the sailors of old. She cast out her blue search light inviting us to come be her guest and to put her service to the test. I could picture this tower singing just like animated furniture and dishes did in "Beauty and the Beast".
      I think the romanticism of Paris is rubbing off on me!      Read more
