Aire de Repos de la Briande

    April 27, 2018 in France ⋅ ⛅ 17 °C

Pleasingly, most of our journey was on motorways today. Just getting the van up to speed and clicking on the cruise control makes things so much easier.

We parked in a lovely campervan aire within a rest area. Each of the bays was bordered by 7ft hedges making it feel very private. It was that the toilet emptying point was oit of action. In the morning we looked around the on-site gourmet supermarket but nothing took our fancy so we hit the road once again.Read more

    Charroux - auf dem Rückweg

    December 2, 2018 in France ⋅ 🌧 12 °C

    Home exchange, house #4

    August 14, 2016 in France ⋅ ☀️ 34 °C

We're in Liglet. Yup, exactly. We're in the middle of nowhere(actually we're in the centre of France), where you can hear nothing except crickets chirping, wind blowing through the leaves and seeing nothing but clear blue sky(with so many stars!) - bring it on comets!🌠

We arrived just a few minutes before the sunset, and you can see it directly from the garden(Thanks Brit for putting up the chairs and all), and also the wine was waiting for us (Thanks Deb!) so there's that. House is very big and old(apparently has a very kinky history). I think we'll be just fine. 😉Read more

    August 17, 2016 in France ⋅ ☀️ 27 °C

Charming and quiet town, apparently known for books, and where the writers got inspiration. There is an old bridge connecting the two parts of the town center. We crossed it and went up to the church to get the best view of the town. After that a cup of coffee overlooking the old bridge and up to the Notre Dame cathedral. Lovely.Read more

    South to Lusignan

    May 24, 2017 in France ⋅ ⛅ 26 °C

If every day could be like this...

Stayed last night at a B&B; how far could I get on a bread and croissant breakfast?

Thanks to a kindly breeze, my average speed was 13mph for the day. Delightful mid morning stop at Airvault to rehydrate and pick up stuff for lunch. More convenience stores than on previous days so provisions have been topped up.

Beautiful and cheap €5.25 campsite by a river with frogs croaking for company.

Soldiers on war memorials have been painted. Workers planting melons.

    Week #3

    August 19, 2016 in France ⋅ ⛅ 24 °C

Time goes by so fast! We are already on half of our roadtrip(still, a lot of places to see though)! Liglet gave us stunning sunsets, field views and relaxed times by the lake. There's no better way to end this week - with sunset followed by a full moon. Nice!

Day 425: Heading North via Saint-Savin

    April 15, 2018 in France ⋅ ☁️ 13 °C

Lots of driving today! Headed north for a few hours to the town of Saint-Savin, where we visited a World Heritage listed church. It's known as the Sistine Chapel of Romanesque art, as the interior has a large barrel vaulted ceiling covered in frescoes of religious scenes. Very impressive!

We were about to pay the 10 euros to access the complex, but the lady selling tickets told us the church was for free and the tickets were only really for the gardens and the rest of the abbey! We had it on good authority that the rest of the complex was fairly uninteresting and that the frescoes were easily the highlight, so that saved us a bunch of time!

Continued on our way north and stopped at a little village known as L'Anglin. It turned out to be one of the prettiest villages in France with an old ruined castle, a creek, some bridges and stone houses, and of course lots of flowers now that spring has finally arrived. We had a coffee and tea in a British tea-room in the centre of the village, along with a proper English scone (jam and cream included!).

More driving for another hour and we finally arrived at our accommodation for the evening, at a farmhouse in the Loire Valley. Our hosts are quite nice and gave us a large goat's cheese quiche/tart thing for dinner, along with some of their home-made wine - very nice!

The internet wasn't quite up to scratch, so we drove about 20 minutes into a nearby town and had an evening drink at a bar overlooking the Loire and a magnificent chateau on the opposite bank. More of that to come tomorrow!

    Angles sur l'Anglin

    June 11, 2018 in France ⋅ ⛅ 14 °C

Walking was the order and of the day, so we drove into Angles sur l’Anglin to set off on the waymarked yellow route. The village is a perfect mixture of castle ruins and old houses with classic french shutters.

After no sign of an arrow for a while we nearly set off down a path but then found a clear sign with a yellow marking. Lovely picnic lunch at a spot with a great vista. Countless turns later we realised that the signs must be pointing out the way for a much longer yellow route than the one we were intending to complete, so we retraced our steps. We took a quick detour to see a rock formation through an ancient moss filled wood.

We had already spotted a Salon de the on the way so we stopped in for some lovely tea and ice cream.

    Wanafly Airsports

    July 22, 2016 in France ⋅ ☁️ 55 °F

Dan and Louise suggested a night at this place as it was fairly close to Orador We actually stayed at an empty house nearby that they were looking after. It was odd being in someone's house without them there.
At the wanafly house (where they teach people to fly microlights) we had a good evening eating with the flyers, sitting outside and drinking wine.
When we went back for breakfast we had a good look around, met their pig and had a walk to the runway.

    Châtellreault, Saint-Jacques

    March 31 in France ⋅ ☀️ 20 °C

Read more
