      Paris!

      We started at the airport in Costa Rica on May 2nd at 11:00am and touched down in Paris on May 3rd at 5:00pm. Taking out the 8 hr time change, we traveled 22 hrs to get here. It was definitely tiring, but also so exciting.

      We’re staying in our first official hostel - no private room this time. 8 bed dorm bunks with privacy screens - actually very nice set up. Some won’t allow me to stay, if it’s a “party hostel” — no one over 35 yrs old. But many do.

      So we arrived, took the metro to the hostel, dropped everything and headed to where else but the Eiffel Tower for the first night! So amazing! Can’t wait to see all the history and sites. It doesn’t get dark here until 9:00 so lots of time to explore every day.      Read more

      Art Day

      We had early morning tickets to see some art so after a lovely breakfast and good strong coffee we hit the bikes again and risked our lives in the Paris streets. We were 30 minutes late for our time slot but Aiden said it was very Parisian of us to be late. It didn’t matter anyway because no one even checked our tickets! (Note to self, just walk in like you belong there and save the dough!) Here’s where Daniel shined. He has read every Rick Riorden book on the planet and really knows his Greek and Roman gods. The Mona Lisa was in the new room which is nice considering the last time we were there she was in a dark hallway. I prefer the big art anyway over her. The Wedding at Cana is more my style.

      Then Saint Chappelle- I heard Daniel walk in and say “whoa!” That says it all.      Read more

      The Louvre … just wow

      Each day on this trip brings a new wonder to behold, it seems like. Today we saw SO much again … Paris has a remarkable affordable public transit system, and the city is surprisingly walkable - in sections.

      We started our morning at The Louvre. It is the largest museum in the world, and it was obvious. I found the building itself to be a work of art! We only scratched the surface there. Did see some amazing statues - Nike of Samothrace (winged) which Jordan sketched - 190 BC, and the Venice de Milo! 100 BC. Other noteworthy piece we saw was the Mona Lisa - the crowds were intense, but we managed to get to the front eventually to see her.

      The French have created magnificent gardens everywhere - reminds me of what I’ve seen in Canada. They are just gorgeous. There were also two arches - one smaller and one massive. Really massive. The biggest surprise was seeing the Place de La Concorde - this is a square (where kings/queens were beheaded during the revolution) with what looks like a small version of the Washington monument from far away, but as you get closer it is clear it’s different. It’s an Egyptian obelisk!! No kidding. It’s 3300 years old! The Egyptians gifted the 230 ton Luxor obelisk (it has a twin still in Egypt) to France in the mid 1800’s. It took SEVEN years to transport it across the Atlantic, the Mediterranean, up the Nile and finally up the Seine river. And then it took a feat of engineering to raise it.

      We took a metro ride out of the historical district to what looked to be the suburbs of Paris - Wandered the canal and then what else to do when in Paris with the biggest Marvel fan ever (Jordan), we went to opening night of the Dr. Strange movie.       Elf Monate auf der Erde :-)

      Eines Tages, Baby, werden wir alt sein. Oli 👶 Baby, werden wir alt sein
      und an all die Geschichten denken, die wir erleben werden.

      Also lass uns Geschichten schreiben,
      die wir später gern erzählen.
      Lass uns nachts lange wach bleiben,
      auf´s höchste Hausdach der Stadt steigen,
      lachend und vom Takt frei die allertollsten Lieder singen.
      Lass uns Feste wie Konfetti schmeißen,
      sehen, wie sie zu Boden reisen
      und die gefallenen Feste feiern,
      bis die Wolken wieder lila sind.
      Und lass mal an uns selber glauben,
      ist mir egal, ob das verrückt ist,
      und wer genau guckt, sieht,
      dass Mut auch bloß ein Anagramm von Glück ist.
      Und – wer immer wir auch waren –
      lass mal werden wer wir sein wollen.
      Wir haben schon viel zu lang gewartet,
      lass mal Dopamin vergeuden.

      „Der Sinn des Lebens ist leben“,
      das hat schon Casper gesagt,
      „let´s make the most of the night“,
      das hat schon Kesha gesagt.
      Lass uns möglichst viele Fehler machen,
      und möglichst viel aus ihnen lernen.
      Lass uns jetzt schon Gutes sähen,
      dass wir später Gutes ernten.
      Lass uns alles tun,
      weil wir können – und nicht müssen.
      Weil jetzt sind wir jung und lebendig,
      und das soll ruhig jeder wissen,
      und – unsere Zeit die geht vorbei.
      Das wird sowieso passieren
      und bis dahin sind wir frei
      und es gibt nichts zu verlieren.

      Lass uns uns mal demaskieren
      und dann sehen, wir sind die Gleichen,
      und dann können wir uns ruhig sagen,
      dass wir uns viel bedeuten,
      denn das Leben, das wir führen wollen,
      das können wir selber wählen.

      Also los, schreiben wir Geschichten,

      Einkaufen mit Oli :)

      Die Vorräte gehen zu Ende und Oli packt fleißig mit an 😜 ...der Einkaufszettel ist aber dennoch klein, da die Lebensmittel wirklich preisintensiv in Frankreich, und sowieso in Paris, sind.

      Nun denn, Obst, Gemüse, Wasser, Käse und natürlich das obligatorische Baguette sind auf jeden Fall dabei 😆 ...Read more

      Le TGV

      We are on the TGV to Bayonne. Travelling at 186 MpH! Update, the train seems to have peaked at 198 Mph!

      We made 3 Camino friends in the train station, people seeking out fellow travelers in backpacks.

      Fran, a woman from Rockville Maryland. She is meeting a friend in Saint Jean.

      And Kevin & Patsy from Portland ME. Kevin is a recently retired Firefighter from Auburn ME. Kevin told me Malden Firefighters let him park at the station in Malden whenever he goes into Boston on the Orange line!      Read more

      Pt. 3 of Paris

      Part 3 Paris photos!

      -The stairwell in our hotel
      -Our breakfast buffet (and fresh squeezed apple juice... I had 3 glasses.)
      -I found out that there was a train gate named after the Queer icon, Josephine Baker, just down the street so we visited (yes... I had to buy tickets just for this picture lol).
      -We went to the Catacombs and it was way more intense than I was expecting. Pictures to follow....
      -The RER we are on has cherubs on the roof.
      -Enjoy this video of the way the hallways are laid out in the hotel we stayed at and how the lights are at each door for you to turn on the lights in the hallways.
      -I have determined that everyone in Europe can either juggle, play the accordion, or both. I have yet to see someone do it simultaneously though. This was fantastic entertainment.      Read more

      ins Moulin Rouge 🥰

      Vorletzter Punkt auf Amys Liste ...abgehakt.✅️

      Amy hat sich richtig schick gemacht um mit ihrem, O-Ton "alten Vater der sich ganz gut gehalten hat", ins Mouling Rouge zu gehen.

      Bedauerlicherweise ist absoluter Film 🎥und Fotografierverbot 📸🚫während der Show aber....

      Es ist schrill, bunt, lustig und beeindruckend. Das Theater 🎭selbst hat genau den Charm den man erwartete. Umgeben von Sexshops👉👌 und Häusern mit Herzen ❤️auf den Wänden liegt es in einer Art Amüsiervietel voll mit Bars🥂🍹, Pups und Restaurants🍴🥘🥓🥗.

      Die Bühne wirkt total schlicht und alt und verwandelt💥 sich in der Show in ein farbenfrohes🎨 Kunstwerk in dem plötzlich ein Pool🏊‍♀️ steht.

      Faszinierend!

      Von überall kommen die halb nackten Frauen stolziert👯‍♂️👯🏼‍♀️👯 oder fliegen über dich hinweg. Es wird getanzt💃🏽🕺, gelacht😅 und gesungen🎤. Der Champagner 🍾fließt in strömen. Kein Tisch auf dem keine ganze Flasche steht und die Stimmung🥳 teilweise überkocht.

      Amys überraschtes Gesicht zeigte mir ihre Freude. Den Mund 🥹weit offen, suchte sie immer wieder Blickkontakt. Als wäre sie 3️⃣ Jahre alt und wolle mir einen besonderes Laubblatt😍🌿 beim spazieren zeigen.

      In ihren Blicken👀 war deutlich zu erkennen...

      Papa...schau mal! 😊😁
      Ihr war völlig entfallen das ic die Show doch auch sehe 😅

      Wunderschöner Abend mit meiner nicht mehr so kleinen Prinzessin👸🏼

      Made it to Paris

      Long day of travel and not much sleep on the plane but made it to Paris in one piece. Walked around the corner from our hotel and had a great meal and watched a nice cooling rain. Now, off to rest up for tomorrow.Read more

      Paris with obligatory Eiffel Tower pic

      I arrived in Paris with my friends Joan and Chris. While we waited for our other friends to arrive on a later flight we walked to the Eiffel Tower.

      It was overcast, but not rainy, other than a few stray raindrops.

      Had a nice meal with the group at a cute restaurant near our hotel, then early to bed. We scheduled a walking tour for tomorrow, then we'll take the train to St Jean Pied de Port on Saturday to start the Camino.      Read more
