      Bayonne viva la france

      Nun bin ich da irgendwo in Frankreich gestrandet war mein erster Gedanke und dann gab es doch heute einen ersten magic Moment. Dazu später mehr.

      Nun wollte ich schon immer mal in Frankreich sein und siehe da heute ist es soweit. Am wichtigen Tag für Europa ob macron oder le pen. Keine Ahnung von der französischen Politik, aber alles kann nur besser sein als le pen und für Europa.

      So bin ich hier und der Ort entwickelte sich als schnuckelig mit kleinen Gässchen und wirklich hilfsbereiten Franzosen : innen.

      Ich konnte durchs Ballett (tanzsprache ist französisch) petit petit eine falaffel avec pommes problemlos bestellen, mercy und orevis sagen.

      Ne nette Mademoiselle gab mir einen Tipp für einen Park wo ich essen wollte. Nach zwei Kilometer bergauf km kam ich an einem Friedhof an 😂, der aber sehr schön ansich angelegt war. Ruhe und Gedanken hätte ideal gepasst aber Imbissessen. So lief ich weiter und hab an der Bushaltestelle gesessen und als ich fertig war kam der magic Moment. Da hat sich wer auf meinem Schuh niedergelassen (siehe Foto).

      Das Glück war bei mir und ich habe es in mich genommen und als ich wieder aufbrechen wollte flog der Gast wieder weg.

      Nun warte ich satt und beeindruckt vorm Bahnhof, mit meinem allererstern original Cafe aut lait und warte auf Zug und dann Bus zum Ausgangsort "Saint Jean Pied de Port".      Read more

      Day 11

      Besuch Teste de Buch + Dünenfliegen

      Es geht heute ganz gemütlich los. Unsere Windvorhersage hatte gute Bedingungen für den Nachmittag vorhergesagt.

      Also kauften wir zuerst am Morgen im Camping eigenen Supermarkt für Frühstück und weitere Mahlzeiten ein. Nach dem Frühstück mussten wir noch kurz ein Malheur beseitigen: unser Auto war über Nacht von Vögeln attackiert worden - man konnte vor lauter 💩 nicht mehr aus der Windschutzscheibe schauen… also musste mit heißem Wasser 🚿 abgespült werden.

      Danach machten wir uns dann auf zu einem kleinen Ausflug: wir planten über die Düne nach Norden zu gehen zum kleinen Ort „Teste de Buch“, wo es einige sehr schöne Hotels - und hoffentlich auch Cafés - geben würde.

      Der Spaziergang war sehr schön und auch einigermaßen anstrengend, dort so im Sand herumzustapfen. Direkt am Anfang sahen wir schon einige Gleitschirme beim Groundhandling - und ein paar flogen auch schon!

      Wir gingen jedoch weiter. Man hatte eine tolle Sicht vom höchsten Punkt, wirklich verrückt, diese Düne! Es sieht wirklich ein bisschen aus wie die Wüste.

      Im Ort angekommen waren wir sehr zufrieden mit unserer Unterkunftswahl: hier waren eigentlich nur Villen - und nichts los in der Stadt. Das einzige - und auch sehr nette - Café war das vom Nobelhotel Haïtza. Wir genossen ein Getränk und 2 x Eis 🍧. Danach nahmen wir den Bus zurück zum Camping 🚌

      Hier machten wir uns bereit für die Düne und packten unsere Sachen. Als wir an der Düne ankamen war schon viel los - allerdings auch sehr viel Wind 💨 also stiegen wir fast bis ganz unten herab und packten aus.

      Die ersten Versuche waren noch ziemlich ruppig und dauernd saß man wieder am Po oder rannte dem Schirm nach. Zum Glück wurde es etwas besser und ganz am Ende des Tages, nach 4 Stunden Schwerstarbeit, gelang uns endlich der erste richtige Flug. Herrlich!

      Am Abend schauten wir dann noch Videos. Vielleicht gibt es ja noch Tipps und Tricks, wie wir besser zurechtkommen? 🤓      Read more

      Day 15

      Mit dem Rad rund um‘s Bassin d’Arcachon

      Heute hatten wir einen großen Plan: einen Radausflug von unserem Campingplatz aus rund um das Bassin d‘Arcachon. Fast 100km mit dem Fahrrad. 🚴‍♀️🚴‍♂️

      Erstmal Glück gehabt am Anfang: natürlich hatten wir für die spontane Aktion keine Fahrräder reserviert, und waren dann umso glücklicher als uns der Campingplatz die allerletzten beiden Fahrräder überlassen hat. Sonst hätte die Tour aufgehört bevor sie begonnen hatte. 😅

      Die Strecke war bunt gemischt. Manche Teile waren leider entlang der recht stark befahrenen Landstraße (wenn auch mit separatem Radweg), andere mit schön gestalteten Radwegen entlang des Strandes. Highlights gab es viele:

      - Ein kleiner alter Hafen mit schön gestalteten Bootshäusern 🤩

      - Der schöne Ort Andernos Les Bains, wo wir Mittagspause machten und bisschen flaniert sind 🍦

      - Der südlichste Punkt am Cap Ferret und ein kleiner Strand dort, wo wir einmal beide in den Atlantik gesprungen sind und man einen tollen Blick auf das Meer und die Düne hatte 🏖

      - Die Überfahrt mit dem Schiff zurück nach Arcachon ⛴

      - Die vielen kleinen Kirchen, die uns irgendwie an unsere Reise in Kolumbien erinnerten ⛪️

      Zum Abendessen gönnten wir uns einen Besuch im Restaurant - zum selber kochen waren wir dann doch zu müde 😮‍💨      Read more

      Day 48

      Travel day

      We left Paris today and headed to Bordeaux, France. It’s about 35 miles from the western coast. We took a high speed train for the trip and It definitely felt much faster than any US train I’ve been on. We were greeted at the train station in Bordeaux by a stairway, with of all things, a picture of Multnomah Falls painted on the steps. We couldn’t believe it!! No explanation - just the pic.

      We got to our Airbnb and then headed downtown to explore a bit. I wasn’t sure what we’d find here, but so far, as always I’m amazed at the wonderful sites we stumble upon.

      We just wandered today, but what we found was SO beautiful. The old streets, buildings, alleys are so quiet and peaceful. The vibe of the city is so laid back and enjoyable. Eventually we laid down in a grassy park, in the shade and took a nap with hundreds of others doing the same. We had hand scraped snow cones and we eventually found the “Miroir d’eau”. It’s on the riverside and is the largest mirror in the world - 3450 m sq - made of water. Hundreds of kids and families were playing in it. The mirror area would fill up - maybe 4-6” - and then start draining leaving a thin film of water on the black concrete. And then magically, it would reflect EVERYTHING! It was absolutely gorgeous - and refreshing to walk around in. This was a great start for our short time here.      Read more

      Day 49

      Bordeaux!

      We spent the day exploring Bordeaux till late into the evening. So many beautiful things to see. What I’ve seen so far of Europe is truly magical. It feels like a fairy tale sometimes.

      We went to SO many places I can’t even describe them all. Pey-Berland tower (231 step spiral staircase - climbed it!), St Andre Cathedral, Palais Rohan, Grosse Cloche (clock and bell tower), took an open air bus tour, walked the Jardin public gardens, Porte Cailhou & Porte de Bourgogne (two old gateways - when it was walled - to the city that still stand), St Michael Cathedral & the Pont de Pierre (bridge). Then we stayed until dark and explored a lot of the city lit up. Beautiful!

      Things I don’t like about France: the food, and the people haven’t been especially friendly or kind. Unfortunately stereotypes have rung true. Things I loved about France: the desserts, and the beauty of everything around me.      Read more

      Day 50

      Last day in Bordeaux

      Our last day in Bordeaux was unique - we went to La Cite du vin, which is a wine museum!! It was a really modern museum that took you thru everything to do with wine that you could think of, and ended with a tasting on the top of the building overlooking the city. Was a very cool experience.

      Then we headed over to Bassin de Lumieres for a one hour show. This was absolutely incredible! This exhibit is very hard to describe. It was works of art, paintings, graphically set to music and somewhat animated - displayed over the water, and on all the walls and floor in an old MASSIVE submarine bay from WW2. The French have done a remarkable job of repurposing old buildings. This literally brought me to tears at one point, as it was almost overwhelming to all the senses. The videos and pictures won’t do it justice. It was absolutely mesmerizing.

      We also walked by the most amazing wine store I’ve ever seen. Three stories, straight up, all displayed on a spiral staircase. It caught my attention.

      Finished the evening hanging around a Starbucks (to use their wifi to plan our next city), and then had wine, bread, cheese and meats for dinner sitting outside at a cafe. Beautiful night.      Read more

      Montag Camping Le Petit Trianon

      Adios Spanien. Danke für deine Gastfreundlichkeit, der grandiosen Gegend und der schönen historischen Städte und Orte. Dieses Gefühl und die Bilder werden uns auf unserem Weg durchs Leben begleiten.
      Auf geht's Richtung Heimat. Petra hat in 570 km Entfernung einen schönen Campingplatz im Garten eines ehemaligen Schlosses gefunden. Er kostet nur 20 € am Tag und bietet einen 30 Grad warmen Aussenpool zur Entspannung. Wir buchen drei Übernachtungen und wollen, hier am Ende der Welt, unsere Reise Revue passieren lassen.       Back to Home sweet Home

      Wir machen einen Zwischenstopp bei Freunden, in ihrem kleinen Paradies mitten im Wald und in traumhafter Umgebung von Frankreich (wir müssen unbedingt wieder herkommen🥰🌳). Hier ist alles ganz besonders grün, da die ganze Umgebung auf einem Kalkstein- Plateau gewachsen ist und das Regenwasser nicht tief absinkt, weshalb die Pflanzen immer genug Wasser haben. Merciiiii für die schöne wenn auch viel zu kurze Zeit bei euch...❤️

      Mit über 7.000 km mehr im Gepäck, machen wir uns anschließend zackig aber entspannt 😅, mit Zwischenstopp und Nacht in der Schweiz, auf den Weg back to Home sweet Home ❤️      Read more

      Ondres und Capbreton Teil I

      Der Atlantik hat uns voll im Griff. Wir sind so zufrieden hier. In Ondres standen wir auf einem neuen schönen Stellplatz, dicht zum Strand. Durften uns faszinieren lassen von dieser Gewalt des Meeres, den hohen Wellen, der rauen Seite, den plötzlich auftretenden Gewittern und den tollen Fahrradwegen hier. Einen Nachmittag waren wir im Zoo von Labenne und sind später dann nach Capbreton aufgebrochen. Dort hatten wir dann das Glück beim Sonnenuntergang Delfine zu sehen.. Was ein Glück, wir waren hin und weg und freuen uns über diese schönen gemeinsamen Erlebnisse.Read more

      Day 4

      South toward the trail

      It was a confusing and tense morning of ticket and train matching. What would have been a simple fix in the old days of lots of station masters who can answer questions is now just a guy you wait in line for an hour to talk to who has no power to touch a Eurrail pass. I think God solved the problem for us. I think. 🤔 I activated our passes but according to my app it called my activation date my first day of travel (we get four) That leaves us one day short. I had reservations to get on the train today and I had activated the passes yesterday but my misunderstanding of what “activation” meant has us messed up. They say on the trail “the Way” will provide. The ticket collector was satisfied with the reservation tickets and didn’t actually check my Eurrail pass. That gives us back a day. The Way did provide. (Before you think I’m getting too mystical, read John 14:6. That’s my understanding of The Way.)

      So now we are getting out of the city on the TGV going 300 km/hr for a smaller, slower town. Jon and I have never been to Bordeaux and since the train from Paris to St Jean ran though here anyway we decided to get off and look around. Paris, a city known for style and fashion was hard for me with my three practical zero fashion hiking outfits and no makeup or styling products. I’m sure I looked like a homeless person to them but on the trail I think I’ll fit right in.

      I think the whole world is in a heat wave right now. It’s 104 F in Bordeaux. Yuck. It will cool off before the hike but it will also be rainy. Hmmmmm. Which is better?!

      On the upside, our two rooms in the Hilton are luxurious compared to that one room in the hostel in Paris. (These were way cheaper too!)

      I also saw another couple that was dressed like us- probably other Camino hikers. Slobs unite!

      We went to the old town of Bordeaux which turns out was settled by the Romans. I drank from an ancient Roman well (I’m sure the water was fine) and we stumbled on a cathedral that was built in 800’s. No… not 1800’s! My bucket list thing was to put my 104F feet into the Miroir d eau.

      Considering Europe is known for their lack of ice and tepid beer I’m surviving considerably better than I’d have thought. I just really want an ice cold water though.      Read more
