      Hello Paris ❤️

      September 29, 2023 in France ⋅ ☁️ 19 °C

Fabulous first day in Paris. We fast trained in from Lyon where we had to stopover to have a few hours sleep after busing from Turin. This was an extra stop because of the rockfall in the alps which has stopped all trains passing through.Read more

The Phantom of the Opera is Here...

      June 7, 2023 in France ⋅ ☀️ 82 °F

Toured the Paris Opera House. The auditorium was closed but it still took us ages to roam around and look at everything else. Everything is insanely carved marble and photos don't really capture the enormity of those rooms!Read more

      All aboard the Champagne Train

      September 18, 2022 in France ⋅ ☀️ 11 °C

We are left Paris this morning to catch the train to Epernay, where everything is about the bubbles.

We met up with Gerry and Cilla for breakfast and, after bidding them farewell, did a quick pack. We had been advised that it was a car free day in Paris between 10am and 6pm, so decided to walk to Gare de L’Est to catch our train (much to the horror of the hotel manager). Ian had done the calculations and it was about a 3.2km walk which we all felt we could achieve, even with our suitcases. And, we did. We walked through the 8th, 9th and 10th arrondissments in about an hour seeing some lovely views of Paris. It was a delightful walk and fairly easy to complete.

We boarded our train on time and I am so pleased I had booked 1st Class tickets, as it made the trip very comfortable and roomy. The trip to Epernay took about 90 minutes and our Airbnb was only a 10 minute walk from the station.

      Parijs - showdag 11

      November 18, 2022 in France ⋅ ⛅ 13 °C

      Oct 17 - Palais Garnier

      October 17, 2019 in France ⋅ ⛅ 16 °C

Our mission for today was to tour the Palais Garnier. It is a 1,979-seat opera house and one of the Paris National Opera's two home venues in the city along with Opéra Bastille. It was built from 1861 to 1875 upon a commission of Emperor Napoleon III. The venue soon became known as the Palais Garnier, "in acknowledgment of its extraordinary opulence" and the architect Charles Garnier's plans and designs, which are representative of the Napoleon III style. The Paris National Opera now uses the Palais Garnier mainly for ballet.

The Palais Garnier is probably the most famous opera house in the world. This is at least partly due to its use as the setting for Gaston Leroux's 1910 novel The Phantom of the Opera and to the popularity of subsequent film and stage adaptations. Another contributing factor is that among the buildings constructed in Paris during the Second Empire, besides being the most expensive, it has been described as the only one that is "unquestionably a masterpiece of the first rank.” Its theatre is considered to be one of the world’s most beautiful theatres.

I had arranged for us to go on a guided tour so we could get all the behind-the-scene stories. Our guide was Nicholas who ably led us on a 1.5 hour tour of discovery. This place is a bedazzled, opulent, eclectic, allegorical, over-the-top, giddy mix of ornate styles. The main purpose for the building was not to satisfy artistic reasons, but for the incredibly rich and idle to be seen several times a week at the opera. They, in essence, were the actors and actresses in an ever-changing story of lust, intrigue, influence and power. The emperor had his own personal entrance where his carriage could enter the building and ensure his safety from the lower class, disenchanted citizens. The grand staircase allowed the rich to parade in dressed in elegant costumes that were made specially for opera nights. The Salon, originally intended as a smoking room for men only until women demanded access at the building’s opening, is a long gallery filled with fabulous mosaic floors and an ornate ceiling featuring themes from the history of music. The opera auditorium is a sea of red velvet, gold paint, stucco and marble. The bronze and crystal chandelier which did NOT fall down (although a counter weight did kill a concierge) is a magnificent piece of art. It hangs below a ceiling (installed on a removable frame) designed and painted by Marc Chagall. The original ceiling, painted by Jules Lepenveu, still exists but is hidden from view. The entire Arc de Triomphe would fit onto the stage so huge, bold productions could be presented. The place is a wonder to see - put it on your list of things to do if you are ever in Paris.

      Louvre & Champs Élysées

      June 10, 2023 in France ⋅ ⛅ 29 °C

      St Chapelle and Souffles

      June 13, 2023 in France ⋅ ☀️ 29 °C

Tuesday, June 13th. We had breakfast at the hotel and then packed up and left our bags downstairs. Today we moved to another hotel.

We had the St Chapelle tour, but the wrong address. We thought we had the right one and no one was there! We were even early and stopped to take photos of the Olympic rings. They are having the Olympics in Paris in 2024 and are frantically cleaning the city. There is scaffolding everywhere and we were excited to see the Olympic rings were already on display.

So we had the wrong address and had to run through the streets of Paris. We went to the Chapel to catch them there. We met them at the door so it worked out perfectly. We had a private tour before the Chapel opened in the morning. We learned so much history and enjoyed the beauty of the stained glass depicting the stories of the Bible.

The Sainte-Chapelle (Holy Chapel) is a royal chapel in the Gothic style, within the medieval Palais de la Cité, the residence of the Kings of France until the 14th century, on the Île de la Cité in the River Seine in Paris, France.

Construction began sometime after 1238 and the chapel was consecrated on 26 April 1248. The Sainte-Chapelle is considered among the highest achievements of Gothic architecture. It was commissioned by King Louis IX of France to house his collection of Passion relics, including Christ's Crown of Thorns – one of the most important relics in medieval Christendom. This was later held in the nearby Notre Dame Cathedral until the 2019 fire, which it survived.

Along with the Conciergerie, Sainte-Chapelle is one of the earliest surviving buildings of the Capetian royal palace on the Île de la Cité. Although damaged during the French Revolution and restored in the 19th century, it has one of the most extensive 13th-century stained glass collections anywhere in the world.

The guide showed us bullet holes in the buildings from WWII. He told us quite a few Catherine de' Medici stories as well. We went to Marie Antoinette's prison - The Conciergerie. We also went to Notre Dame. It is still under reconstruction and they hope to have it finished by December 2024.

We went to the Shakespeare and Company bookstore and had coffee. It was a really hot day. It's been in the 80's but that is warm for this time of the year. We also spent time in the bookstore. The bookstore continues to serve as a purveyor of new and second-hand books, as an antiquarian bookseller, and as a free reading library open to the public. The shop houses aspiring writers and artists in exchange for helping out around the bookstore. Since the shop opened in 1951, more than 30,000 people have slept in the beds found tucked between bookshelves. The shop's motto, "Be Not Inhospitable to Strangers Lest They Be Angels in Disguise", is written above the entrance to the reading library.

We walked to Le Soufflé and had lunch and dessert. Ham and Cheese for lunch and Creme Brulé for dessert for Cindy. Goat Cheese and Rosemary for lunch and then Pistachio Chocolate as dessert for Anya. We called our driver because we were tired of walking. He kept telling us he was close but we waited on him for almost an hour. We just chilled outside the cafe - in the heat. We had him take us to the Holiday Inn to get our bags and then drop us at the Intercontinental. Our room wasn't quite ready so we were given champagne while we waited. After I told them we were celebrating Anya's graduation, they delivered more champagne, cookies, macarons, and apricots - along with a card - to our room. It was a special treat and became part of our picnics in the room. Mikel's points covered the first two hotels - Thank you Mikel!

Anya did an interview from the bathroom of our room for a job at OSU!

We had dinner in the room - a bed picnic. We walked about 7 miles today!
