      Chin Chin on the Seine

      Evening river cruise (Bateaux Parisiens) on the Seine was fantastic as our trip winds down. A mellow cruise on the Seine, the french really do sit along the river with wine, too many to count.
      We passed the OG of statue of Liberty. This Pont de Grenelle Statue of Liberty (a quarter-scale replica) was installed some three years after the New York Statue of Liberty, and in fact was originally one of the working models made whilst preparing to construct the “real thing.”

      Eiffel Tower afternoon and French dinner

      After a needed nap and some errand running to fix our blunder of bringing the wrong adapter (oops!), we went to the Eiffel Tower in the authentic Parisian gloom and rain…
      We ate a lovely French cuisine dinner of escargots, lamb and duck. Thomas asked me what French cuisine generally is. To which I replied, “things… in sauces.” I seem to have been justified.😆
      We ended the night meeting a girl from Turkey haphazardly who asked us to take her photo. We then joined her to a famous jazz club!      Read more

      The Big Bus Tour

      We head toward Notre Dame where lies the pick up point for our Big Bus city tour.
      Up on top with sunshine beaming down and wind in our hair, we head through the Paris streets following the Seine. The trees wacking the bus top wasn't something I expected!

      We passed museums I'd visited and stunning parks. Heading up the Champs-Elysees toward the Arc de Triomphe where we were planning to get off but someone mentioned having a picnic at the Eiffel tower and the Arc was bypassed. Armed with a baghette jambon sandwich and a coke, we squatted barefoot on the grass at the Trocodaro view point of the tower.

      Kids laughing and blowing bubbles, fountains spraying cool water in the air and people sprawled across the lawns. This is the life hey Pete?? (We face timed Pete knowing she is a night owl).

      Whilst leaving, I asked Athena to take a photo of me holding the eiffel tower 🗼 between my hands. So after much directing from her you can check out the amazing results via photos below! 😂      Read more

      Nos casamos

      Dejamos el Airbnb, nos juntamos con el fotógrafo y tuvimos la sesión de fotos frente a la torre Eiffel. Hicimos el cambio de anillos e intercambiamos votos.

      Ya somos sr y sra!

      Luego de eso dimos las últimas vueltas en París antes de tomar el bus a Ámsterdam.

      Último dato: en el parque frente a la Torre, mucha gente hace picnic. Vimos a un grupo de tipos vigilando los momentos de descuido de los turistas: cámaras, celulares, etc. Además se coordinaban con quienes venden torres en miniatura y botellas de vino o cerveza.      Read more

      Day 1

      Paris Tag 1

      Um 4:30 Uhr ging morgens der Wecker, um 5:00 Uhr saßen wir dann auch schon im Auto auf dem Weg zum Kölner HBF.
      Um 6:45 Uhr fuhr der Thalys über Liège und Brüssel Richtung Paris.
      Die halbe Fahrt hab ich verschlafen, weil ich am Vorabend nicht all zu viel geschlafen hatte.
      Gegen 10 Uhr sind wir dann in Paris angekommen und haben erstmal unsere Taschen in ein Schließfach gebracht,(was sich als schwieriger als erwartet rausstellte da der Bahnhof nicht die besten Beschriftungen hat).
      Mit leichtem Gepäck haben wir uns dann auf den Weg zum Künstler-viertel Montmartre gemacht.
      Nach unzähligen S€x Shops und Str1pclubs sind wir dann bei dem Moulin Rouge angekommen und haben uns von dort aus durch sämtliche, winzige Hintergassen zum Künstlerplatz Place du Tertre vorgearbeitet.
      Auf dem Weg wurde sich natürlich noch ein Crêpe mit Nutella genehmigt und die Büste von Dalida bestaunt.
      Nachdem wir die meist leider nicht so ansehnlichen Kunstwerken betrachtet haben, sind wir noch ein paar Meter weiter zur Sacré-Cœur gegangen und haben uns die Kirche auf dem höchsten Punkt von Paris angeschaut.
      Nachdem wir wieder aus der Kirche raus waren haben wir uns auf dem Weg noch unten gemacht und sind dort auf mehrere Hütchen Spieler, Armband-Binder und Trickbetrüger gestoßen. Auf dem Weg zum Bahnhof zurück gab es noch einen Bubble tea für mich hehe.
      Nach ca 30 Minuten fahrt zum Hotel haben wir erstmal unser Zimmer bezogen und uns eine Stunde später wieder auf den Weg in die Innenstadt zu den Katakomben von Paris gemacht.
      Ich muss ehrlich sagen, da unten(ca 60 Meter unter der Erde) war es angenehm kühl, und sehr interessant zu sehen.
      Die Katakomben ziehen sich über 255km mit mehr als 6 Millionen Toten, jedoch ist nur ein sehr sehr kleiner Teil für die Öffentlichkeit zugänglich.
      Als wir wieder aus den Katakomben raus waren haben wir beide Hunger bekommen und haben was zu essen gesucht, nachdem uns mehrere Läden zu teuer, zu langweilig oder zu Fischig waren haben wir eine kleine Seitenstraße mit mehreren Marktständen gefunden und sind diese abgelaufen. In der hintersten Ecke in einer winzigen Seitenstraße verbarg sich eine Crêperie die auch Pfannkuchen artige Crêpes anbot.
      Dort haben wir uns hingesetzt und uns ein Crêpe-Pfannkuchen gegessen.
      Daraufhin haben wir uns mit der Meteo auf den Weg zum Eiffelturm gemacht die ersten Fotos von dem Pariser Wahrzeichen geschossen.
      Gleich geht es bis auf die zweite Ebene des Eiffelturms, welche 745 Stufen vom Boden trennen. Meine Beine tuen mir jetzt schon leid.      Read more

      Ausblick vom Palais de Chaillot

      Mit dem Crêpe im Magen ging’s zum gegenüber vom Eiffelturm gelegenen Palais de Chaillot. Das Palais de Chaillot wurde für die Weltausstellung 1937 auf den Fundamenten des ehemaligen Palais du Trocadéro erbaut. Das Palais de Chaillot wurde im neoklassizistischen Stil am östlichen, der Seine zugewandten Hang der Hauteurs de Chaillot errichtet und umfasst zwei langgebogene Flügel, die sich an beiden Seiten in monumentalen Pavillons fortsetzen. Man hatte bei der Neuerrichtung 1937 bewusst auf einen umschlossenen Gebäudeteil an dieser Stelle verzichtet, weil der dadurch entstandene, jederzeit öffentlich zugängliche Freiplatz den mittlerweile wohl berühmtesten Blick auf den Eiffelturm öffnet. Das Palais de Chaillot beherbergt heute vier Institutionen. Das Théâtre national de Chaillot, das Musée de l’Homme für Vorgeschichte und Anthropologie, das Marinemuseum und das Zentrum für französische Baukunst. Sehr beeindruckende Bauwerke. Am beeindruckendsten bleibt aber sicher der Ausblick auf den Eiffelturm. Nachdem wir den Ausblick einige Zeit genossen und ein paar Verkäufer erfolgreich abgewehrt hatten, ging’s weiter zum für heute am weitesten entfernten Punkt. Dem Arc de Triomphe.Read more

      Day 18

      Day 18: Bye Bye Fifi; Hello Cambeys

      After taking our last look at Mont St Michel, we loaded up Fifi and headed for Paris. Matt was excited to be on major roads for this part of the journey, especially when he realised the speed limit was 130 - he was not so delighted when he was told that doing 130km/h, in the rain, on the wrong side of the road, in a fiat 500 was not a good idea! We dropped Fifi at Rouen train station and took at 1 and a half hour train ride into Paris where we had to learn yet another ticketing and timetabling system...fun and games - NOT. However we managed to find our next accommodation without killing each other, and rang the Cambeys who were only 10 mins away. After a quick catch up, we all walked down to see the Eiffel tower, then decided to climb the Arc de Triomphe to see the tower light up - magical. A short 2.5km walk home, where we ordered pizza for tea...at 10pm. Off to see a palace full of mirrors tomorrow.Read more

      Day 19

      Day 19: Palace of Versailles

      We were off to visit the French version of Windsor castle today. Having watched Marie Antoinette on netflix before we came, I was ready to have a poke around and learn a bit more. I was not prepared for the absolute over the top grandeur and oppulance that was Versailles...no wonder the peasants stormed the Bastille! The history seeping out of the walls kept Matt engrossed, so I snuck out to walk around the gardens...I didn't know there were 2000 acres of them. I took lots of photos and have lots of ideas for when we return to Mt Rankin. While I admired the plants, Matt took himself off to investigate how the support structure of the giant terrace worked. When we returned home, the Cambeys went out to a nice little French restaurant around the corner for dinner, Matt had toast and I had a glass of wine. A tiring, but pretty nice day for us all!Read more

      Day 20

      Day 20: Another 18,000 steps

      Today started with a double metro ride out to the Basillica of the Sacred Heart of Paris...otherwise known as "another church". Once again Matt climbed to the top while I sat and looked at the floor and windows. We then caught another train to Sainte Chapells Cathederal - a church with over 1200 individual leadlight panels, but no dome to climb. We then walked to Notre Dame to see how the restoration was going - slowly, and on to the Pantheon Paris. This was a huge surprise, as we didn't know what to expect. The ground floor level was amazing but the crypts below were spectacular. Marie Curie, Voltaire and Victor Hugo are just a few of the big names interred there. On the way back to the metro we found an English pub and had a couple of pints to keep hydrated on a very hot day.Read more

      Day 22

      Day 22: A day of rambling

      We headed out to see the Crypte Archéologique de l'İle de la Cité, which is under Notre Dame but just as we got there police and army men with machine guns forced the cowd back and put up police tape around the entrance. We waited for 20mins, hoping they'd let us in, but more police arrived and the crowd were forced back further so we thought we'd better go. So we headed off on foot to find the site of the Bastille. We found it on the middle of a roundabout. I decided it was time to try a crepe (yum) and Matt had a beer, served with a straw! We then walked to the start of the Promanade Plantee which is a parkand walk along an old abandoned viaduct and wandered along for a few kilometres before catching a train to the Eiffel Tower to see it up close. From there we went to a micro brewery near the Tropadero before walking home - with a bagette - for tea.Read more
