      Day 20: Another 18,000 steps

      October 1, 2023 in France ⋅ ☁️ 20 °C

Today started with a double metro ride out to the Basillica of the Sacred Heart of Paris...otherwise known as "another church". Once again Matt climbed to the top while I sat and looked at the floor and windows. We then caught another train to Sainte Chapells Cathederal - a church with over 1200 individual leadlight panels, but no dome to climb. We then walked to Notre Dame to see how the restoration was going - slowly, and on to the Pantheon Paris. This was a huge surprise, as we didn't know what to expect. The ground floor level was amazing but the crypts below were spectacular. Marie Curie, Voltaire and Victor Hugo are just a few of the big names interred there. On the way back to the metro we found an English pub and had a couple of pints to keep hydrated on a very hot day.Read more

Day 22: A day of rambling

      October 3, 2023 in France ⋅ 🌙 15 °C

We headed out to see the Crypte Archéologique de l'İle de la Cité, which is under Notre Dame but just as we got there police and army men with machine guns forced the cowd back and put up police tape around the entrance. We waited for 20mins, hoping they'd let us in, but more police arrived and the crowd were forced back further so we thought we'd better go. So we headed off on foot to find the site of the Bastille. We found it on the middle of a roundabout. I decided it was time to try a crepe (yum) and Matt had a beer, served with a straw! We then walked to the start of the Promanade Plantee which is a parkand walk along an old abandoned viaduct and wandered along for a few kilometres before catching a train to the Eiffel Tower to see it up close. From there we went to a micro brewery near the Tropadero before walking home - with a bagette - for tea.Read more

      Eiffelturm

      July 27, 2020 in France ⋅ ⛅ 30 °C

      Super Tag! 😊🌞

Big Bus and a Cruise on the Seine

      March 3 in France ⋅ ☁️ 6 °C

We took the Metro to Place de La Bastille, and had petit dejourner (breakfast) at a cafe on the square. Surprise! A footrace (we think half marathon). We then headed to the Louvre in search of the Big Bus. After a couple of false starts, we found the Big Bus office. I had reserved 48-hour tickets, which included a boat tour. I already reserved a boat tour independently, so double the fun!

The Bus itinerary was a bit messed up because of the footrace (sorry, no Notre Dame today) and because it was Sunday (sorry) the Champs Elysees was walking only. We didn't have a lot of time, so didn't get off to walk.

We did get off at the Eiffel Tower, then went to the Brasserie down the block before heading to the river for a boat ride. We'll do another tomorrow, since one comes with the Big Bus 48 hour ticket. We met a lovely young lady and her cousin, who lives in Germany. She's Persian, but has been living in the US for many years, previously in Northern Virginia and now in California. We chatted as we traveled up and down the Seine. There was a beautiful view of the Statue of Liberty replica, lined up with the Eiffel Tower. I missed getting the shot, but it'll live in my memory. Maybe I can capture it tomorrow.

We bade farewell to our traveling companions, and headed back to our place.

      Paris, France

      September 14, 2023 in France ⋅ ⛅ 21 °C

After recently spending almost a month in Paris for work I was excited to show Jessie some of the highlights of this incredible city. I’d made a shortlist that we would need to cram into an afternoon and morning. We would have less than 24 hours between arriving from Norway and catching the train to Bordeaux. The Eiffel Tower and Champ Ulysses were obvious highlights. We also made a few food stops at places I had been before but never had the chance to try.

We dumped our bags in our “room for a night” 2-star hotel and hit the streets. The first stop was a coffee and baguette because what’s more French than sitting on the sidewalk eating a French baguette 🤷‍♂️. From there we caught the metro up to Hospital Invalides which houses the tomb of the great French military commander Napoleon.

The weather was stunning allowing us to just wander our way towards Arc de Triomphe passing the Grand Palais and Petit Palais (Big and Little Palace) and along Champ Ulysses. Top of the list of food stops was an ice cream place I'd taken the Princess a few times but had never got to have one. Time to find out what this was all about. Located in a fashion concept shop, KITH ice creams are kind of a McFlurry but with cereal and sweet toppings blended through ice cream. Definitely worth the stop but at about $18 each, fair to say sharing one was enough. After wandering up to Arc de Triomphe the next stop on my pre-planned food journey was Le Cristal Bar. Besides the ridiculously delicious Creme Brûlée, Le Cristal has seats right next to the roundabout with the Arc in front.

My schedule had us reaching the Eiffel Tower for sunset but as we were so absorbed in the espresso and Brûlée I realised we were going to be late. We jumped a few electric bikes that were available to hire from the sidewalk and got stuck riding against one-way traffic the whole way to Trocadero. Arriving right at sunset we found the perfect spot looking down on the greatest landmark of Paris. While we stood there savouring the romantic moment we turned around to find a girl behind us taking our photo from behind. Kinda weird but she was extremely nice explaining that it was such a great shot she couldn’t resist 😂. Thankfully she shared them with us and promised to delete them afterwards.

Getting late and now cooling down, we went back to the hotel to grab a jacket and found a small restaurant still serving food. Thankfully in Paris, that’s a city that never sleeps, finding dinner at 11 pm isn’t much of an issue. Hitting the last food stop on my itinerary we shared a Beef Tartare while the rest of the restaurant watched France beat whoever in their Rugby World Cup group match. Considering we started our day in Norway at 3:30 am for our early morning flight and had explored both Amsterdam and Paris, that was us for the night.

      Schatten!

      September 5, 2023 in France ⋅ ☀️ 33 °C

      Arrival

      June 4, 2023 in France ⋅ ☀️ 25 °C

      Bonjour!

Obviously, the first things you do when you get to Paris is drink wine and go to the Eiffel tower. Today was a very long day. It was great. It’s only been about 7 hours but I really like Paris so far. I am excited to see what else it has in store for me.

I was very surprised by how large the Eiffel tower is in real life. For some reason, it did not look as large to me in photos. This was really interesting because it showed me how everyone can have different subjective experiences based on visual imaging. Your experience in person is probably always going to be different than you expected based on images and stories. This discovery was also definitely influenced by visual acuity. Since we are so close to the Eiffel Tower, it appears larger than if we were looking at it from a distance. It is interesting to see visual acuity in action.

I can't wait to see it sparkle!

      Cheers!

      Spuntino veloce

      August 16, 2022 in France ⋅ ☁️ 24 °C
