Part 2 …. the Restonica valley

      September 11, 2024 in France ⋅ ☀️ 20 °C

We did not appreciate why the route included this additional round trip after our arrival in Corte. It soon became evident why, as we climbed up the valley with its twisting and zig-zagging, and very narrow, road. The valley itself was narrow and quite densely forested; there was often no barriers and the steep sides fell away to the gorges of the fast gushing river Restonica below. Absolutely stunning !!
Glad we left the bags behind as it was a serious climb of 9 kms at an average 7% but with some sections at 12 - 13% to sting the legs. It was also 27 degs under a fierce sun. I was cooking !!!
The storms of Nov ‘23 hit the valley hard and the flooding was bad enough to take out a bridge on the road near the head of the valley. As a result the pass itself is closed and vehicles are not allowed above Tuani which is about half way up the valley. Above that is a cyclist and hikers paradise. When you eventually get to the top and see the ruins of the bridge, it really makes you realise the raw power of nature. We climbed down to the gushing river and I was brave enough to stick my feet in ….. but not brave enough to go any further ……. it was freezing.
